Springtail “jumping”
springtails are arthropods of the subclass Collembola. They get their names from how they jump to avoid danger. Springtails have a modified tail-like appendage on the bottom of their abdomen called a furcula. This appendage is folded under the body and is held under tension by a structure called the retinaculum, and when threatened the animal can quickly release the furcula and like a spring loaded toy the animal is quickly flung into the air in a matter of milliseconds. effectively avoiding any danger heading its way.
