Dungeon in a Box
I've begun collecting non-digital DnD stuff! My first is a dungeon in a box subscription, this was the first! Voyage of the Fallen Star part 1:
Pics below.
Returning this blog to it's ttrpg roots! I've started dming again and want to rant!
I really want to make a beholder plush. Like, super want want want!
Why I am using a campaign setting instead of creating my own, an opinion piece by an inexperienced dm:
I’m a unpublished fantasy novelist. I’ve world built to pieces, several worlds that might make an interesting setting for a campaign with just a little tweaking.
What I cannot control is my own inbuilt bias’ and prejudices, I built thse worlds for my own stories and characters.
While I like to think I’m a decent enough dm that I would allow my players to play out their own stories, I’d rather not risk myself getting in the way unnecessarily. My job is to curate my players fun, not force them to act out my own stories.
So I use a pre-made campaign setting, yes I tweak and edit and add to it, but I try to make it work for the setting, to prevent my bias.
It’s time for a very special giveaway!
I’ve often gotten asks, while running this blog, from people who don’t yet have their own first set of dice. Every time, it’s difficult not to ask for their address and favorite color to send them a set, because dice are a great good to be shared with everyone! But now, I’m going to do just that! 20 lucky people are going to get their first set of dice, picked from the assortment above!
Rules:
Must be following me! New followers count too.
Reblog to enter; likes don’t count this time (for reasons you’ll see below). You may reblog as many times as you like.
Signal boosts from long term players are allowed and appreciated! I’d love for as many newbies to get the chance to enter as possible.
You must tell me on your reblog(s) about your dream D&D (or other tabletop setting) character. Can be just a short couple of lines describing them, or you could write a full backstory for them, or anything in between! This will help me choose which set of dice is perfect for you.
Do not tag your reblog as “giveaway,” it can lead to the notes getting messed up and no one wants that.
Winner will be chosen by RNG on March 31st, 2018. (Giveaway ends at 11:59:59PM Eastern US time on March 30th)
You MUST have your askbox or messages open and MUST be comfortable giving me a shipping address.
If you live outside the US, I’m going to ask that you cover shipping costs–I hate to ask that, but given the size of this giveaway it’s the only way to include international users without getting potentially prohibitively expensive. Continental US shipping is included.
There’s no way for me to verify whether or not the winners are truly newbies with no dice of their own, so I’m going to go on the honor system. Please don’t make me regret that!
**This giveaway is not affiliated with tumblr in any way**
I have no dice :(
Dream dnd character? I actually have more than one, but here is my favorite so far. . .
Alright, she is an elven rogue artifact hunter who passes herself off as a ditsy, failed “wizard” who failed because they just didn’t understand her power and genius!! whose skills seem to be as a passable fighter type.
She joins up with adventuring groups because they are more likely to run into unique artifacts.
Dungeon Master Essentials
I decided to make a list of DM stuff that I personally use or think are important to know when it comes to being a DM. So here’s my list:
Medieval Fantasy City Generator: This generator is now my LIFE. It generates incredibly complex cities with good customization. (Thanks to plantkat for sharing this site in their post here)
Naming Your Towns/Cities: Now that you’ve made your city, time to name it and give it some character! This post contains lots of great information.
Index Cards Rule: Fuckyeahdnd shared a SUPER convenient way of keeping track of turns and HP in combat. I use this system now for every single session I run.
Tricks & Traps: I am AWFUL at coming up with good Dungeon traps and challenges, this PDF includes some incredible ideas. The original poster, Courtney C. Campbell also runs a blog where she shares tons of great stuff. (Thanks to we-are-rogue for sharing the PDF in their post here)
Playing Different Types of Characters: Writeinspiration has a masterpost on how to write/play lots of different types of characters.
Unique NPC Jobs: Lauraharrisbooks wrote a list of different Fantasy Jobs which can help populate your world with some unique characters! Another similar post by Thewritershandbook also covers Common Occupations in the Middle Ages.
Developing Characters by Threes: Monticusrex’s method of creating characters help you really flesh out who they are. Useful for Players and DM’s.
Troublesome Players? Speak Up: Dicebound brings up an incredibly great point. If someone is being a jerk, speak up and call them out. This is especially important and relevant now to crush awful behavior before it even has a chance to show it’s ugly face.
List of D&D Resources: And finally, pretty much anything you might need for D&D. (Character stuff, spells, online communities/ways to play, etc..) A lot of people contributed to this post but thank you Mushroomancy for posting the original list.
Donjon: And finally, this site is a great resource for looking up Spells and Monsters along with tons of other generators. Not every single Spell or Monster is on here, but most are listed.
(I tried to give credit to the original posters or the actual URL for websites, unless those sites or URLs were no longer active)

5. Backgrounds
Aim for two good skills, or one good skill and some nice extras. Note that if a character gains the same proficiency from two different sources, you can choose a different one of the same type (ie a skill or tool). This might make Backgrounds with redundant proficiencies marginally superior as they basically let you choose whatever skill or tool you want in exchange*.
*You can create a custom background 😍 as per PHB p125. If so, choose any two skills, any two tools/languages, any equipment package, and whatever feature appeals to you. I’d recommend one that gives free food and/or lodgings (eg Entertainer, Folk Hero, Outlander) or political influence (eg Guild Merchant, Noble, Solider).
Player’s Handbook Backgrounds
Acolyte 😭: Insight, Religion. Insight is good if you didn’t dump Wis, Religion is bleh, two extra languages can be a dud or a blessing depending on your campaign or DM, and the feature is very campaign specific (ie “What do you mean there isn’t a Temple of Waukeen in this town?”). Take this if you really want to play an agent of Shar/Tymora/etc for roleplaying.
Charlatan 😍: Deception, Sleight of Hand. Two relevant skills, two relevant tools, 55gp worth of swag, and a fluff item like loaded die or signet ring. Sweet. The feature can be handy for forging DOA bounties for assassinations or warrants for search & seizures.
Criminal 😍: Deception, Stealth. Two relevant skills. You already have proficiency in Thieves’ Tools so choose whatever tool you want to replace it. Criminal Contact could be useful for “find that guy” type quests or sending warning messages or something (“the orcs are coming, pass it on”), but I’d bet it’ll more often than not turn into a DM tool for delivering quests/plot info. Spy 😍 variant can legitimize your activities.
Entertainer 😐 : Acrobatics, Performance. One good skill, one okay tool kit & an instrument. One free instrument, costume, and 15 gp. This feature is actually pretty good. Can help advance plot as well as save money on lodgings. Less good if your DM regularly forgets to enforce such expenses. The Gladiator 😭 variant swaps the free instrument for an “inexpensive” weapon, but it doesn’t give you proficiency. So, no free whip proficiency for rogues unless your DM houserules it.
Folk Hero 😭: Animal Handling, Survival. Bleh. Bad skills, bad tools, bad equipment. Only saving grace is the feature which nets you free safe houses to hide from local authorities or rivals. Robin Hood fluff is nice for roleplaying.

D&D Compilations Project: Barbarians
[The first of the Class Compilations Project (now revised with additional options and less spelling errors), the Barbarians!]
[Barbarians are fueled by their rage which comes from many sources. And just as numerous as their sources of this rage are the ways a barbarian can manipulate and amplify it within the various subclasses listed above from the Player’s Handbook, the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide, and Xanthar’s Guide to Everything!]
What is the D&D Compilation Project?

I’m currently revising my bard’s character sheet, from the TPK’d campaign, in the hopes of maybe playing her again one day
Audrey, half-elf bard, you shall adventure again!
First TPK ever today so I am a very sad Great Enemy indeed :(
No pretty lieutenant to set upon my foes, as I was also just a player, my poor little bard. . .
I’m contemplating attempting to review some of the dungeons and dragons modules, older ones as those are the ones I have pdfs of.
But I would really like a bit more experience, both playing and GMing, before I embark on that. . .
Is anyone interested in playing/GMing the original Dungeons and Dragons?
I have pdfs of it, (my eternal thanks, Greg, I hope whatever it is you are doing in Texas is working out!) but I’ve never really read them. . .
I am interested in giving it a try, but I’m only really sorta familiar with Roll20. . .
Intro post is very intro
Hey all!
I’m a new player and baby GM, no really, a super baby is me!
I’ve only GMed one game, and it was the beginner's module over on roll20.
I’m currently playing in several campaigns, one regularly on Saturday, my first!
And the others are more sporadic, I finished the Death House in the Curse of Strahd module recently, played a couple of sessions in a homebrew d&d 5e game with Vikings, one session of Mutant Year Zero and I have a PC made for a Call of Cthulhu game that has yet to happen.
So far, this game will mainly focus on Table Top RPGs, mostly Dungeons and Dragons, but I will probably dip into other games, mainly video games and the like. I am not much of a sports fan.
I’m MilkerMelkor on Roll20 and Reddit, I don’t have my blogger up yet, but one day maybe.
