When reading fics I try not to let it bother me when a character is not in a scene. Shameless has so many that sometimes you have mentally to put a couple in a corner. When that happens I just find an in character excuse to why they are not in a scene.

Why isn't Carl at this family dinner? Don't worry he's just sticking an action figure in the toaster.

Where's Debbie at this birthday party? She's there, she's entraining Amy, Gemma, and Franny who are also not mentioned at this family gathering.

The thing is, I don't think it's that the fandom doesn't like angst. It's that many people have gotten tired of unrelenting grimdark heaped onto characters that don't get a break and don't even seem to like each other, all packaged in a sprawling, conflicting, bloated world(s). WFA is notable for its slice-of-life fluff, but it also presents a coherent, easy-to-enter, balanced storyline populated by a cast of characters that love each other.
