Everything about Franco becomes sadder and crueler with the knowledge that in the 30s Louisiana had “ugly laws” which forced people with visible disabilities to only go out at night under threat of communal harassment and police violence. Can you even imagine growing up like that, with your very existence criminalized? Completely cut off from any semblance of normality with no one but an uxoricidal gangster to lean on? No wonder he’s so deranged.

@millie-milkshake oh right so for the first decade of his life when he was too young for that he would’ve just. Lmao. Had nowhere to go. Nowhere with other children at least. Getting carted around by a night nurse with a flashlight in her handbag to be pushed on the swings of an empty darkened park. Giggling quietly in the back of a movie theatre because every look he’s ever gotten was laden with disgust. Cuddling up on the pediatrician because he’s never been touched so gently before. Also: this provides a direct incentive for him to grow up as fast as possible! He killed his first man at ten/twelve: how old was he the first time he went to a brothel? Did he go with other mobsters? The kind of men who think male children having sexual contact with grown women is something to be proud of? When did he have his first drink? Does he even remember?
