"these researchers published a paper on something that literally any of us could have told you 🙄" ok well my supervisors wont let me write something in my thesis unless I can back it up with a citation so maybe it's a good thing that they're amplifying your voice to the scientific community in a way that prevents people from writing off your experiences as annecdotal evidence

people always go "Instead of spending all that time on a study they could have just listened to us when we said these thing happen"

they did listen, that's how studies work, they asked people about their experiences and put all the data together in a nice package that can be cited

People forget studies typically start with a hypothesis and the hypothesis is usually "the people who deal with this are right about their experiences and we should listen to them"

like, we all have our writing pet peeves but we also need to accept they can discourage authors from writing as a whole

can't even tell you how many times i read "here is how to write something properly" posts and thought about a WIP including that thing. i had written it wrong. i would have to rewrite it to do it properly. might as well just write something else at that point

i saw a post one time where someone was mocking fanfic like "japan doesn't have pizza delivery places" or something. like what are people who just want to write fanfic supposed to do? research every little tiny detail? do you know how inconvenient that is to stop and look up 'does japan have pizza delivery places'? do you know how annoying it is?

let's say you write a fic where characters kiss because they picked a romantic movie to go with their pizza or something. now your entire 5k fic is invalidated apparently.

whether it's an overreaction or not to being wrong about a tiny detail... it can be discouraging either way. especially to people who don't already write a lot, and guess what? those can be budding authors. those are the ones that should not be chased away.

just how much do we lose out on because writers get discouraged from writing it to begin with?
