Trust-Building as a Significant Human Resources Solution for Good Management 2
When it comes to building and nurturing trust in the workplace, the human resources solution personnel holds a specific responsibility. The same thing holds true for supervisors and managers. In fact, no successful business would have thrived and survived if trust among employees is absent. Working together towards a common goal and knowing that each member is capable of contributing his part are workplace aspects unified by a shared trust between coworkers. In this last installment of the two part article on building trust in the workplace, here are the remaining pointers worth pondering on.
● Always bear in mind: employees would always find it easy to trust ever-competent supervisors/managers. Exhibiting competence is not accomplished through lip service but rather through concrete actions. Such actions involve effective supervision and competent execution of your other tasks. For supervisors and managers like you, competence would be evident in knowing exactly what you are doing and saying, and having the courage and transparency to admit if otherwise. It does not debase managers and supervisors to admit their lack or absence of knowledge in one area. However, with admittance comes the responsibility of learning about it for the purpose of keeping up with their responsibility of leading from the front. Foolhardy managers and supervisors too proud for their own good pretend to know and give out false information just for the sake of salvaging their egos. Employees would eventually find out. And as proven time and time again, forgiving lying supervisors/managers, particularly those who would never risk their pride even at the cost of sabotaging others and the team's interest, proves far more difficult than forgiving those who openly and readily admit to their faults and shortcomings.
● Trust, like respect, is earned through reciprocal positive action. One such positive action required in building and maintaining all successful organizations is effective listening. For supervisors and managers alike, showing their respect to their subordinates by hearing them out with rapt attention is mandatory. Seeing you as their leader means you have to show them ho much you value their welfare. Be empathetic and sensitive to the needs and plight of your staffers. Going out of your way to understand and relate to them develops trust on their part.
● Do not be afraid to take risks for bettering the products and services you offer to your customers. However, make sure that your risks are well-thought-of and calculated. As the supervisor/manager, your demonstrating mindful risk-taking automatically encourages your employees to do likewise.
● As previously mentioned trust building in a work team is a reciprocal effort. Trust and expect that your employees are capable of delivering no less than a good job. They would know if you seriously place your confidence in their abilities, thus they would be prompted to live up to your expectations.
● A committed supervisor or manager easily earns the trust of his employees. Be dedicated in your work and always be considerate of how your responses and decisions impact your employees' welfare. Practice perfect and wise timing in managing issues, specifically sensitive or crucial ones. Seek to protect your employees' interest and welfare all the time. Avoid leaving them in the dark by withholding crucial information or covering it with a lie.
