Day 7 of National Storytelling Week and our final book is Stickman by Julia Donaldson. We went to the park as the sun was shining (finally!) And collected sticks to make our own stick family with sticky eyes and mouths! Hope you've enjoyed sharing our activities for National Storytelling Week. Xx

Day 6 of National Storytelling week and we read Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. I found these fab activity sheets online. Why not print them out and have a go? We enjoyed hiding different animals in stacking boxes and making our own version of the story. Our pig was too oinky, our rabbit too boingy and our crocodile too snappy!
National Storytelling Week - Day 5 Very apt for the stormy day we've had, today we read My Friend The Weather Monster by Steve Smallman & Bruno Merz. The weather monster must be feeling grumpy today so if you see him, please cheer him up so we can have sunshine! Today's activities were puddle jumping on the way home from school and singing all the weather songs we could think of while playing rain sticks! Then we sat around the table playing guess who by candlelight as the storm kept knocking the electricity out!
National Storytelling Week - Day 4
Today we read a much-loved story from my childhood, Stephen May’s The Magic Birthday Cake!
A bizarre story of a grandfather who tries to make his granddaughter an amazing birthday cake and ends up putting everything in it…even his house! It never occurred to me as a child how the cake is still normal size despite everything thats in it, or how they survived eating the peculiar concoction…but I guess thats the magic bit!
Our activity was decorating our own magic cakes with stickers!
National Storytelling Week - day 3
Yesterday we chose another of our favourites, The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.
A wonderful story, but I wish i could get James Corden’s voice out of my head when I read it! (We’ve seen the animated version too many times too!)
Our activity to go with the story was making Gruffalo Crumble…
'Gruffalo crumble?' The gruffalo said, Then quick as the wind he turned and fled…

Day 2 of National Storytelling Week and today we've chosen The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle...and made our own caterpillars using homemade playdough. If you want to try this dough, heres the recipe: 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 2 cups water, 2tbsp cooking oil, 4tsp cream of tartar, food colouring (optional) Mix it all together in a pan, heat on the hob for a few minutes, stirring until thick, knead. If you want a few colours, seperate before kneading, add food colouring, then knead. Enjoy!!
National Storytelling Week
So today marks the start of National Storytelling week & to celebrate, this week I'm going to blog a different book each day. I adore reading to children and love how the right story can completely absorb them and capture their imagination... #1 - Its Dr Seuss and The Cat in the Hat, if you haven't read it, why? Its a classic. The rhyme makes it so enjoyable to read. It's rhythm holds children's attention and the nonsense is perfect. My favourite quote has to be "look at me, look at me, look at me now, its fun to have fun, but you have to know how!" I've been reading it to my little one since he was 1 and neither he nor I really need the book anymore as we both know it word for word :) Hope you enjoy it!
