Drarry drarry drarry - more ideas!

drarry has become my emotional support ship while i’m writing my PhD thesis 😭

i barely have time these days for normal entertainment (cinema, travelling, sports, etc.), so instead my brain keeps producing drarry AUs at concerning speed. i’ve started writing a fic already (link on my profile), but honestly most of my “writing” lately has been mapping plots, refining twists, building character arcs and emotional damage scenarios in my head.

i LOVE angst, dark fic, morally complicated characters, and emotionally devastating devotion (for which I think this ship has the perfect dynamic)— though most of these would still end happily or bittersweet-happily. also almost all of them eventually involve draco becoming friends with ron and/or hermione (and some of they will have harry being friends with blaise and pansy) because i am obsessed with difficult-earned friendship dynamics.

some of the concepts currently haunting me:

— dark drarry inspired by the count of monte cristo: harry returns after being presumed dead for 14 years. he is 38 now, changed beyond recognition, and bent on revenge. draco, now head auror, is assigned to investigate him without realizing he is hunting the man he once loved and mourned. probably my favourite idea. the count of monte cristo is one of my favourite books ever and i want the yearning/revenge/tragedy atmosphere SO badly.

— voldemort won AU: harry, ron, hermione and draco survive as unwilling but valuable assets of the regime while trying not to lose themselves completely. very dark, political, survival-focused, lots of shifting loyalties and emotional dependency.

— cursebreaker partners drarry sent abroad on dangerous missions. action-heavy, lots of pining, ancient magic, near-death experiences, unresolved tension in hotel rooms in foreign countries, etc.

— ron and hermione die, and draco and harry end up raising teddy and rose together. grief, domesticity, healing, learning how to survive parenthood and loss at the same time.

— cozy paris AU: harry escaped fame years ago and owns a small shop in paris (still deciding what kind). draco stumbles upon him by chance and they slowly fall in love far away from england and everything that once destroyed them.

— harry and draco are cursed/petrified for years and presumed effectively dead. rose grows up watching what their absence did to everyone around them and becomes obsessed with bringing them back.

— founders era time travel AU: harry and draco are sent back to the founders period, except they don’t just arrive there — they slowly become salazar slytherin and godric gryffindor themselves. draco becomes gryffindor. harry becomes slytherin. history starts reshaping them as they fall in love while risking forgetting who they originally were. genuinely think harry-as-salazar is one of my favourite concepts i’ve ever had.

— 2-part fic:

part one: famous quidditch player harry + auror draco secretly sleeping together, then secretly falling in love. soft, intimate, cozy, lots of hidden tenderness. they cannot go public because it would endanger draco’s work and harry could become a target. eventually harry reaches his limit and gives draco an ultimatum before leaving for a tournament.

in one ending they reconcile.

in the darker continuation: draco dies during a mission before they can fix things.

part two becomes a full revenge story involving magical organ trafficking and extremely dark themes. dead dove territory. still unsure about the ending.

— auror trainee rivalry AU: ron and draco are the department’s golden trainees and develop an unexpected friendship. harry is brilliant but reckless and deeply distrustful of draco despite being attracted to him. he’s also irrationally jealous watching draco become close to ron. the three compete to become future head auror. lots of pining, competitiveness, bad decisions, emotional repression, ron being the only functional person there.

— niche grief AU: harry dies and draco eventually develops a complicated emotional/sexual relationship with ron and hermione (threesome) as all three try to survive the grief. they bond first out of loneliness and longing, then something real starts forming between them (something that cannot go public). harry had been planning to propose to draco before he died.

— another grief AU: nobody knew harry and draco were together except blaise. harry had bought a ring and planned to propose after ron and hermione’s wedding because he didn’t want to overshadow them. after harry dies, ron becomes obsessed with figuring out who he intended to propose to, while hermione throws herself into hunting the killers. the truth eventually comes out and the three slowly learn how to grieve together instead of separately.

anyway 😭 these are the ones currently most developed in my brain.

i would LOVE to know which one people would most want to read because i genuinely think about these when going home after a long day working on my thesis and before sleeping.

Also, yes, there WILL be smut. a lot of it. Even though I still have limited experience writing it. this is drarry. It feels almost legally required.

Harry can’t dance with Parvati.

He’s blinded by the lights, sweating in his dress robes, about to be sick. The Great Hall swims and sparkles. Maybe he’ll faint.

Someone with bright hair and black robes sweeps in and seizes Harry’s hand.

“Sorry, Patil,” says Malfoy, sounding sincere. “Needs must.” Then he hauls Harry onto the dance floor. “Bow.” Malfoy demonstrates, so Harry copies him. Then Malfoy takes his waist. “Your left foot—” Malfoy presses the toe of his shoe gently against Harry’s. “—goes back first. I’m leading, can’t be helped. Don’t cry, Potter. It’s only a waltz. Ready? One two three—”

“You’re good at dancing,” says Harry, seven years later. To nobody’s surprise, Draco’s leading again.

“It’s easier, this time around,” Draco answers, and spins him. “You look significantly less ill.”

“I really liked your black dress robes—”

Draco pulls a face. 

“But I love the white ones best.”

“Yours aren’t bad, either,” says Draco, and kisses Harry to thunderous applause from their wedding guests.

Draco did not believe in Divination.

It was vague nonsense, which was why he complained for the entire queue while Pansy dragged him towards “the most gifted seer in Europe.”

“You need distracting,” Pansy said.

What he needed, though neither of them said it, was Harry Potter not leaving for Australia in three days. Harry Potter, who smiled at him over Ministry reports. Harry Potter, whom Draco had been meaning to tell he loved for six months, two weeks, and one catastrophic almost-kiss.

When the seer peered into her crystal ball, Draco asked, dryly, “So, who’s my forever partner?”

“A man with spectacles.”

Draco rolled his eyes. “Revolutionary.”

“Green eyes, dark hair, and a most interesting scar on his forehead.”

That night, Draco wrote an owl before cowardice could return.

Harry came over instead of writing back.

“And that,” Draco said years later, “is how I married your father.”

Their children shrieked with delight and tore back into the garden, apparently satisfied at the answer to their question.

Harry waited until they were gone, then said, “You do realise she was probably a fake, and she read the rumours in the papers.”

“Obviously, darling.”

Harry’s smile softened. “Then why did you believe her?”

Draco looked out at the garden, where their children were laughing and playing, all wild hair and muddy knees.

“I didn’t,” Draco said, lacing their fingers together. “But Pansy paid her twenty Galleons to say it, and I was too desperate not to listen.”

Harry laughed, then kissed his knuckles.

“Best money she ever spent.”

"I am here but I am not yours." Said Malfoy, staring at the book in Harry's grasp.

He looked as though he had said it accidentally, eyes soft.

"Uh," Harry replied, intelligently.

"Chapter eighteen of your book. Have you read it?" Malfoy came closer. Inquisitive.

"No, it's-" For Hermione. Hermione sent him to collect a book she pre-ordered, stuck working overtime at the ministry. "It's- a recommendation. For me. To read."

"Ah," he said, "it's really very good."

"I've heard," said Harry. He nodded to Malfoy’s book and read the title aloud, "The intricacies of a spellbound wizard"

Malfoy raised a brow, "Have you read it?"

"Oh, yes." Lied Harry. Just because he didn't remember the last time he'd read a book didn't mean he was any less intelligent than that pompous git.

"And what did you think?" Had Malfoy stepped closer again, or was it Harry's imagination?

Harry faltered, "Very - very good. Descriptive."

"It is, isn't it? You know, I wouldn't have thought you'd like this sort of thing, Potter?"

"No I'm a - a big fan. Of. That sort of thing." Was he sweating?

"Hm. Well maybe you should stop by the manor one day and we can discuss... the book." Malfoy had definitely come closer; they were practically breathing the same air, now.

"Sounds - good. Yeah it's a. Sounds - sounds like a plan."

"See you, Potter." He said, before gracefully leaving the shop.

Harry immediately scanned the shelves for Malfoy’s book, finally finding it on the bottom shelf. "The Intricacies of a Spellbound Wizard" read the title. Beneath, in a smaller print were the words; "A guide to magical intercourse between wizards" and Harry died, for a brief moment.

He had just told Draco Malfoy that he was a - big fan - of magical gay sex.

It was only when he was done having a little panic that Harry realised. Malfoy had invited him round to discuss the book. Had he been flirting? Surely not.

Well it didn’t matter, because Harry obviously wasn’t going to go. What did Draco wish to discuss? The best positions to create protection spells? How orgasms can bring a potion to maturity? He was not going. Absolutely not.

Unless Malfoy would think that rude?

Not that Harry cared what he thought, but not going would only add to Malfoy’s insistence that Harry was uncivilised. So really, he simply had to go.

Harry promptly paid for the book and apperated to Wiltshire.

“Indeed, it will.”

“Alright, do it,” he said, steeling himself.

The witch pulled out her wand. “Remember, you will see their face and their name will appear above in golden letters.” She tightened her hold on the wand. “Now close your eyes.”

Harry complied and heard only a soft murmur before a face clearly appeared behind his closed lids. A highly familiar face. Silver blond hair, grey eyes that would shift with emotion, and a now-considerably-less pointy chin. He didn’t need the golden letters to know who this was. Draco Lucius Malfoy.

Harry opened his eyes. “Oh, no.”
