⏾ neither of you felt the need to introduce yourself when you first met eyes at a bar past midnight. it was like meeting someone out of a dream you forgot you had. driver watched you through the reflection of the mirror behind the bottles, and you watched him through the bottom of your whiskey glass.

⏾ the connection was instant and immediately unsettling. you were concerned that he was a police officer tailing you from three cities away, but when you moved to sit next to him—close enough that your shoulders touched—the blood stains on his jacket told you otherwise.

⏾ driver has the bartender silently refill your drink, and for an hour after that, you have a fragmented conversation. half sentences, observations, short questions with evasive answers. you don’t push, and he’s weirdly attracted to the fact that you notice everything anyway.

⏾ you don’t say goodbye before you leave. driver follows you five minutes later, expecting you to be gone, but you’re standing across the street smoking a cigarette like you knew exactly how long he’ll wait before coming outside to look for you.

⏾ that’s how the game started. driver began seeing you everywhere afterwards. the same diner two mornings in a row. parked outside his garage once at dusk. “reading” the label of an energy drink in the isle of a grocery store while a fluorescent light flickers overhead. every time he notices you, your eyes are already on him.

⏾ you notice him too. his idling car half a block away from your apartment complex. his silhouette outside a laundromat at one in the morning. a pair of gloved hands still on a stirring wheel as he watches you walk through rain soaked streets.

⏾ neither of you can tell who began following who first.

⏾ the tension becomes intoxicating because neither of you acknowledge what you’re doing. never an “i saw you,” never ask any questions or say a word. just continuing to appear in each others orbits like magnets pretending not to pull.

⏾ you start changing your routes home, wondering if driver will adapt. he always does, parking in places he hopes you’ll notice. and you always do.

⏾ one night, he deliberately takes the wrong train across the city past midnight. driver sits there, watching the dark reflection in the window until, three stops later, you quietly step on the carriage without even looking at him. neither of you speak for the entire ride.

⏾ you’re obsessed with catching each other, genuinely worrying when you don’t spot the other every couple of hours. lingering eye contact across intersections, looking up to find the other already staring. tiny almost-smiles when one of you notices they’ve been followed again.

⏾ the cat and mouse aspect gets genuinely more ridiculous and competitive by the day because the roles keep shifting. sometimes you disappear for two days only to suddenly reappear leaning against his car at dawn. other times, driver is following you through empty streets with terrifying precision, as silent as a ghost.

⏾ he’s sleeping less, every time headlights pass his window, he’s checking the area, hoping it’s you. meanwhile, you’ve taken up late night drives, for no other reason than the possibility of spotting his car somewhere around the city.

⏾ the one time you meet up, it’s strangely intimate and vaguely criminal. you’re leaning against your car at four in the morning, and he’s just stepping out, genuinely not expecting to see you here. there’s blood leaking from your car, dripping out the trunk and down one of the wheels. one moment you’re driving down a highway to nowhere, next moment you’re in the backseat of his car making out, his gloved hands under your shirt running along your skin.

⏾ you barely trust each other, and it makes the attraction even stronger. you can feel something violent in him, and he can see a similar danger in you, but quieter. but it doesn’t scare either of you away.

⏾ it stops being stalking, you’re in tune with each other at this point. it’s instinct, you’re at the same frequency. it’s not a game anymore. he can feel you when nearby before he sees you, and you can identify the sound of his engine from blocks away.

⏾ one night, you’re listening to music neither of you comments on when driver asks: “why are you following me?” and you look at him for a long moment before answering, “i thought you were following me.”
