Day 70 - November 3rd, Thursday
I have always been fascinated by the Dia de Muertos, known as Day of the Dead, which is a colorful tradition where family and friends pay respect to the dead. I was able to attend the event organized by Center for Student Involvement for the Dia de los Muertos. There was face painting, movie showing and to represent the Mexican culture, where the tradition is widely observed there was live mariachi and Mexican hot chocolate with pan de muerto, also called as the Mexican bread of the dead. They also had an offrenda, which is an altar decorated with candles, flowers and has photos of departed loved ones. Traditionally, offrendas are decorated with Marigolds, decorated skulls called calaveras, and food and drinks adored by the departed. Attending events that involves multi-cultural traditions always invoke a sense of diversity and community.
The event showed the 2017 animated Disney/Pixar movie, Coco. Coco is a wonderful movie that depicts the culture, family and music and it was the second time I had seen visuals depicting Dia de los muertos. The first time was through the 2014 animated movie, the Book of Life. The otherworldly visuals and colors and music captured my attention. I realized that most of my knowledge about cultures, festivities and places were from the movies or shows that I have seen.
