I’ve genuinely never understood how these types of memes are motivational. Are we such sad people that the only way we can find happiness is by creating a fake competition between ourselves and a happy stranger?

If someone else is working harder than I am: Awesome! I wish them well! They’re obviously pushing themselves hard and want it badly, so I hope that they find success in everything they’re working towards! Yay them!

Their situation is not a reflection on me or my work ethic. There will always be someone out there who is doing more or who is more motivated. That’s okay. I don’t have to be #1 in the universe in order to be a good person with a satisfying life.

Their work doesn’t invalidate mine.

Let’s talk about prairie, history, and language. For communities so focused on “native plants”/”native gardening”/etc there’s so little acknowledgement or engagement with indigenous Americans and their history.

When we talk about science, there’s a baseline assumption of objectivity. Science is Truth, something apart from messy cultural ideas. The reality is, culture and all it’s messes bleed into science, like here in ecology. We gotta be conscious of the histories we inherit in science.
