More unreasonable D&D monsters: a fat, treasure-laden merchant vessel sailing unescorted in open waters, a perfect prize for piratically inclined player characters. The ship, its treasure, and its entire crew collectively comprise the feeding lure of an enormous man-o’-war type colonial organism whose main body lurks, unseen, just below the water line.

(The captain is actually a nice enough chap, but as a mere appendage of a horrible monster he has no free will and absolutely won’t be talked out of eating you. He’ll be charmingly apologetic about it, though; whose bright idea was it to give a cnidarian 19 Charisma?)
