I feel like the take that "Princess Bubblegum started out as a fairly shallow and uninteresting character, but then got more complex and morally grey as the show went on" kind of disregards the fact that in her very first episode she creates a zombie apocalypse through recklessness and hubris (but also ultimately good intentions), and makes a twelve-year-old boy lie about it to everyone else in the kingdom. Like, I don't know, she's always been pretty complex and morally gray if you've been paying attention, at least in my opinion.

the whole "insulting someone based on their appearance is bad because it could indirectly hurt people you like who share that feature" is a good start for unlearning body shaming but i do think we need to go further and remind people that even if there was some physical trait that was magically 10000% exclusive to conservatives and creeps and nobody else ever had it, we still shouldnt be insulting them based on that. because the problem with them is not their appearance its their ideology and actions. by insulting their appearance you arent just indirectly insulting others who look like that, youre literally not making the correct point. stay on topic ya know.

i know it's not fair to compare the writing of recent debut tumblr authors to Terry Pratchett no matter how much they want to be him but reading a discworld really is making me despair at ppl not understanding what makes a metaphor good. I really like it, its a good simile. It tells me how ridiculously oversized the claws are. If it were just "giant claws" I'd assume normal giant claws, like a grizzly

yes, it tells you that the claws are the size of bananas. but it says "like sharpened bananas", invoking the spirit of the banana: soft. yellow. sweet. it invokes the size, but not the menace, of huge fuck-off claws, and distracts the reader from a high-action moment by inviting them to imagine trying to sharpen a banana to hurt someone with

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂
