So I’m….. just over halfway through Authority and I am just starting to realize that it’s remarkably boring. We’ve found out very little new information so far, and the bits of new information we have gotten have been received via clerical and administrative work, mostly? And I have absolutely no interest in the protagonist and I’d really like him to stop checking out the biologist. Also he’s actively avoiding doing any number of things that would actually help him understand what’s going on, which sure is one option for a character flaw but not a very interesting one for the audience. So basically all of the actual tension comes from thinking “Maybe we’ll find out more soon?” I think it’s probably suffering from middle-of-the-trilogy syndrome, there’s a risk of revealing too much too fast and so he’s overcorrected to avoid that….
Authority is tough on the first read through. I find that once you’ve read the whole series, if you should decide to do a reread you will probably enjoy Authority a lot more. Because it adds a lot of context to know where things are going. Honestly at this point I kind of love Authority, I love it differently than the way I love annihilation and acceptance but it’s still a very important and entertaining piece for me.
