a crack of thunder almost caused (y/n) to drop the mug she was carrying to her boyfriend. the rain pounded against the window as she sat down next to changkyun, placing the mug of hot chocolate onto the table beside him. changkyun buried his face into the crook of (y/n)’s neck.
“can’t it stop raining?” changkyun whined. (y/n) sighed and threaded her fingers through his hair. she rested her chin atop his head.
“i can’t control it, babe. i am not ‘weatherwoman’.” changkyun let out a breath and lifted his head up. as changkyun did so, (y/n) moved the blanket and reached for the tv remote. she leaned back on the couch. the lights above her flickered once, twice, and finally, turned off.
she sighed and placed the remote back down, this time reaching for her phone.
“(y/n)! turn the power back on.” changkyun joked. (y/n) turned on her flashlight and shined it in his face. “okay, okay, not the time”
“let’s just go to bed. it’s not like we have anything other to do.”
changkyun opened the door to their shared bedroom, flipping (y/n) around and walking her to the bed with his arms around his waist and his lips on her neck. he gently placed her on the bed and started to leave hickeys on her collarbone and chest.
he slowly raked his hands up her shirt, taking it off. (y/n)’s hands slowly creeped into his hair, breathy moans emitting from the back of her throat as he started to leave a trail of wet kisses to the waistband of her shorts.
(y/n)’s phone started to ring. changkyun set his chin on her stomach. “answer it.”
she grumbled and turned to the nightstand, reaching for her phone.
“it’s my mom.”
an idea popped into changkyun’s head as she put the phone up to her ear.
he could hear their conversation as he hooked his fingers underneath both her shorts and panties. (y/n) swat at him, but she couldn’t do much with her mother on the phone.
“put her on speaker.” he whispered. (y/n)’s eyes widened as mouthed ‘no’.
“do it.” he said, this time a little louder. (y/n) swallowed as she hesitantly put her phone on speaker.
“are you guys alright? our power went out about an hour ago.” her mom asked.
“yeah we’re fine.” (y/n) answered. she had to suppress a moan as changkyun started to leave butterfly kisses around her thighs, leading up to her clit. he flattened his tongue and licked a stripe upwards. “ours just went out.” she griped between gritted teeth. he silently snickered.
“your dad’s been complaining.” her mom started. changkyun slowly eased two fingers inside her. (y/n) inhaled sharply. “he’s worried that he meat in the freezer will defrost, but i guess that’s what he’s here for.” changkyun started a combination of quick thrusts with his fingers and kitten licks on her clit. it seemed like her mother knew that, because she then proceeded to ask about him.
he internally groaned as his mission of teasing (y/n) was now interrupted. “how’s changkyun doing?”
“i’m right here!” he said. “i’m doing just fine.” (y/n) wished she could have a moment of peace, but changkyun had yet to move his fingers. instead, they started thrusting faster, a squelching noise coming from it. she felt her high getting closer, and she prayed that her mother would hang up before then.
however, changkyun tried his best to keep up the conversation with her. he told her about work, how work was going for her, and how his family was doing.
(y/n) grabbed the phone while changkyun was talking, just as she was about to come. “okay, mom. we have to go. i’ll make sure to call you tomorrow. bye!” she hung up as fast as she could and threw her phone to the side as she finally released, one hand gripping the sheets, and the other in changkyun’s hair. he rode it out, rubbing her clit with his thumb until her hips stopped jerking.

sometimes, jungkook wondered why he ever chose to have kids. tonight was one of those days.
halloween was always a stressful time. he and (y/n) had to figure out what their kids would be, and they were extremely indecisive, picking a different costume every other day.
getting them ready was the worst part. jiyoon was only four, while his older sister, rae, was five, so the chances of them listening to their parents was basically out the window. they’d spill juice on part of their costume, which meant a quick stain removal, or they’d fight and break one of the other’s pieces of the costume.
“jiyoon, you can’t do that. i’m not sure that uncle tae is going to want one of your toys as a gift. i’m sure he’s a bit too old for that.” jungkook said. (y/n) giggle as she walked into their living room, handing jungkook his iron man mask. he smiled at her in thanks.
(y/n) and jungkook had matched their costumes since they first started dating. this year, they were iron man and pepper potts. jungkook, being iron man, of course. he was even going to wear his iron man socks.
the years previous, they had been bella and edward, hiro and baymax, mickey and minnie, and so on. if there was an award, they would be awarded with the best costumes.
they both snapped their attention to a screeching whine coming from rae’s room. sighing, (y/n) went to go check on her daughter.
“jiyoon, c’mere.” jungkook called as soon as (y/n) was out of sight. his son obeyed, making his way to has father and crawling into his lap.
“you’re too young, so don’t go trying to get yourself a partner right now, but when you’re older, get someone like your mom, m'kay?”
jiyoon nodded, then went to find a new gift for uncle tae.
(y/n) waltzed back into her the living room, a tear-stained rae on her hip.
“she pinched her thumb on her zipper, she’s fine though.” she handed over rae to jungkook. “i need to frost those cupcakes hoseok asked us to bring.”
immediately taking rae off his lap as he turned the tv on for her, jungkook followed (y/n) into the kitchen. he wrapped his arms around (y/n)’s waist.
she turned around, and wrapped her arms around his neck. he nuzzled into hers.

(y/n) lived in an extremely old house. it’d creak in the oddest places and at the worst times. his older siblings took this as an opportunity to scare him as a child. so at the age of 23, (y/n) was deathly afraid of ghosts.
his friends, dasom and donghyeok, were absolutely obsessed with them. it was only natural that they wanted to visit a graveyard at midnight on halloween.
(y/n) tried to convince them that he couldn’t go; he had a party to go to and wouldn’t be back till late, but neither of his friends believed him.
he jumped at every little sound. donghyeok would purposely step on twigs or hide behind a tree and jump at him to scare (y/n), which would earn a light punch to the arm. dasom would attempt to defend (y/n), but she’d giggle the entire time.
donghyeok tripped, which almost scared (y/n)’s soul out of him. when he got up, he had only a minor scratch. when dasom shined their flashlight on what could’ve been the cause of him falling, a huge gravestone was in the way.
upon inspection, the gravestone was much bigger than they anticipated. it was a rectangle, at least 4 feet wide and 6 feet long, with a statue of an angel perched on top. the angel had it’s legs crossed, wings wrapped around itself, and was staring down at the gravestone.
“he was only 23.” dasom murmured. (y/n) turned to see his crouched in front, shaking away the dirt and moss.
(y/n) crouched next to her. min yoongi, march 9, 1901 - april 22nd, 1924.
“that’s our age.” donghyeok said. dasom pushed him over.
“we have a sherlock holmes with us? tell us something else, mr. detective.”
while dasom and donghyeok bickered, an icy feeling washed over (y/n).
“i wanna go home.”
dasom whined at first, but donghyeok soon agreed. he needed his beauty sleep, after all.
(y/n) knew he was going to have a slow day today. he woke up only an hour before work, which meant he had limited time to take a shower, eat, and try to look somewhat decent.
he couldn’t sleep at all the night before. he constantly felt like he was being watched, the same feeling he had when he was little and swore there was a monster under his bed.
treading his way into the bathroom, he went to brush his teeth. (y/n) decided to brush off the shower, and would take one when he got home from work instead.
raising his head up to inspect himself in the mirror, he almost dropped his toothbrush. a boy was staring right back at him in the mirror, his reflection nowhere to be seen.
immediately turning around, he stuck his toothbrush out in defense. however, there was no one behind him.
(y/n) turned back around. the mirror had the same boy in it, however this time he was silently chuckling.
suddenly, a rational solution appeared in his mind. this had to be one of donghyeok’s pranks! he probably made the mirror…
what could he have done to make his mirror do this?
he tapped the mirror. his eyebrow quirked up.
“are you real?” he asked.
the boy nodded. “as real as you are.”
his heart dropped at his voice.
“why are you in my mirror?” god, he had so many questions and such little time.
he shrugged. “it’s the only way i can talk to you.”
remembering that he had to go to work, (y/n) started to focus on brushing his teeth. as he spat, he asked him, “why do you need to talk to me?”
he shrugged again.
(y/n) sighed. “can you at least move? i have work soon, and i need to get ready.”
the boy nodded and as quick as he could blink, he was gone.
as (y/n) moved throughout the house, he’d follow him through the mirrors. (y/n) kind of dealt with it. he thought of him like a dog, following him wherever he went.
he told him his name was yoongi. he didn’t remember how he died, but that didn’t bother him. yoongi would often tell (y/n) stories about his friends.

yoongi shrugged. “you weren’t even alive. i’ve watched people move in and out of this house, and how it changed. it gets kind of interesting, it’s a nice way to spend this long in a mirror.”
months went by. yoongi and (y/n) sort of co-existed. it wasn’t like yoongi could come out of the mirrors anyways.
shutting his laptop, he turned to his mirror. “how come you just stare at me most of the time?”
yoongi hesitated to answer for a second. “you look a lot like this girl i liked.”

he told them his name was yoongi. he didn’t remember how he died, but that didn’t bother them. yoongi would often tell (y/n) stories about his friends.
“that seems so long ago.” he’d say.
yoongi shrugged. “you weren’t even alive. i’ve watched people move in and out of this house, and how it changed. it gets kind of interesting, it’s a nice way to spend this long in a mirror.”
months went by. yoongi and (y/n) sort of co-existed. it wasn’t like yoongi could come out of the mirrors anyways.
shutting their laptop, he turned to their mirror. “how come you just stare at me most of the time?”
yoongi hesitated to answer for a second. “you look a lot like this girl i liked.”

there was nowhere else (y/n) felt safer than the middle of the ocean. for some, they were deathly afraid of it, vouching to never go past the sand bank. he had grown up on the ocean. his father was a sailor, and would consistently take their family out on the sea starting in may.
today was the last day his father would be taking his family out for the rest of the year. every september, he swore it got cold, and he didn’t want any of his family getting sick.
(y/n) nuzzled himself into the breeze, trying to take in as much as he could before the next 9 months. “it’s doesn’t even start to get cold until october. we’d have at least two weeks more out here.” he complained. his father leaned against the rail next to him.
“i’ve told you this since you were born, (y/n), i don’t want any of you getting sick.”
(y/n) rolled his eyes. “germaphobe.”
“is that a bad thing?”
(y/n) laughed and rolled his eyes, pushing himself off the railing. he sat down on the cushioned seats in the stern cockpit, pulling out a book he brought with him.
something gleamed in the corner of his eye. he quickly shut the book and set it down in the seat next to him, standing up. walking down into the stern, he knelt down, making herself closer to the water.
at first, (y/n) figured it was a pod of dolphins, but then he remembered that dolphins weren’t green.
“hey, (y/n)? i’m going to go check on your mother in the cabin, alright?”
(y/n) silently nodded, keeping his focus on the water.
the boat slightly dipped. “hi!”
(y/n) jumped back. a boy had propped himself up on the swim platform, completely dry. his hair was black, and his lips were plump. not to mention, he looked like an absolute god.
“why isn’t your hair wet?” (y/n) stuttered.
the boy laughed. “i’m a mermaid.” he shrugged.
(y/n) swallowed. “they’re not real.”
he laughed again. “aren’t they?” (y/n) shook his head violently.
he sighed. then, he did a back flip in the water, showing off his tail, slightly flicking it to splash him.
“i’m jin. i’m not supposed to be talking to you, because you’re a human, but i thought you were really cute, so i left my brothers when they weren’t paying attention to talk to you.”
(y/n) felt blood rush to his cheeks. he shook his head once again. “you need to slow down. you can’t not just hit me with these types of things all at once… i mean, you’re a mermaid, you called me cute, what else is there? the loch ness monster is real?”
“i-”
“please don’t answer that.”
(y/n) sat up on his knees. “you can’t be real. there’s no way.”
jin went underwater for a few seconds. he pursed his lips and cursed under his breath. “i have to go. come out here tomorrow, i’ll find you.”
and with that, jin disappeared into the water.
(y/n) had to pursue his request to meet him once again the next day. he had so any questions, and they’d never be answered if he didn’t go to see him.
“can i borrow the boat? i remember how to drive it and everything, and yes i’ll wear a life jacket, even when i’m on the boat. and i won’t stay in the water for too long, either.”
his father looked scrambled for a second as he answered all the questions he had yet to ask, but he knew he would ask them anyways.
“i mean… as long as you follow the rules. go ahead. the keys are on the mantle.”
(y/n) ran as fast as he could to the dock, where they left the boat the night before.
it wasn’t long until he saw the same flash of green as he did yesterday. he got closer to it before stopping the boat.
jin didn’t hesitate to slightly lift himself up with his elbows onto the swim platform.
“you came back!” he cheered.
before sitting down, (y/n) rolled up the cuffs of his jeans and dipped his legs into the water. “of course i did. d’you really think i’d miss a chance to talk to a mermaid?”
jin’s eyes slightly widened, before he beamed at him. “i never really get to talk to people like you. i see you guys all the time, and i always try, but my brothers stop me from getting too close to the boats.” he grumbled.
“how many brothers do you have?” (y/n) asked.
“six. i’m the oldest. then there’s yoongi, hoseok, namjoon, jimin, taehyung, and jungkook is the youngest. i’m only the oldest by about two hundred years, compared to jungkookie.” jin explained. his tail flicked as he spoke.
“two hundred?” he crossed her ankles over one another. “how old are you?”
jin furrowed his eyebrows. “400...412? no! i’m 413.” he said. (y/n)’s eyes widened.
“oh, geez.” he whispered.
“now it’s my turn to ask questions!” jin exclaimed. “what’s it like being a human? is it boring?”
(y/n) laughed. his curiosity was absolutely adorable. “it’s okay… i mean, i don’t get to live underwater, like you. we can’t breathe underwater, either.” jin’s jaw slightly fell slack. she chuckled at his shocked expression.
(y/n) didn’t get to ask any more questions. jin was so curious; he asked so many, and time went so fast, the sun was already setting.
he had never seen someone look so sad when (y/n) explained to him that he had to go home, otherwise his father would be worried.
“you’ll come back tomorrow though, right?” he asked. (y/n) chewed the inside of his cheek.
“maybe. i’m not sure if my dad’ll let me borrow the boat again. if he says yes, i promise i’ll come, okay?”
jin grinned and nodded, before he dove back underwater, flicking his tail as a goodbye.
surprisingly to her, (y/n)’s dad said yes. he set an alarm for early that morning, 7 am (which was definitely early to him), so he could spend as much time getting to know jin. you don’t get to meet a merman everyday.
it was colder than normal, probably because it was a little earlier in the morning. throwing a light jacket on, he ran out the door before anyone else in his family was awake.
jin was waiting for him only a little out from shore. his eyes widened as slight panic arose in his chest.
“jin! what if someone saw you?” he exclaimed.
he shrugged nonchalantly. “i was trying to get away from my brothers, and since they’re frightened to come close to the shore, i came here. besides, it’s not like i was near a dock, and if i saw someone, i’d just go back underwater for a bit.”
that wasn’t enough to convince him. “and if they saw your tail?”
jin shrugged once again. “they’d just think i’m a siren. sailors like your dad tend to forget that sirens aren’t the only species with a tail like mine.”
(y/n) stayed silent as he drove the boat farther out, jin trailing behind. he waited until the anchor was down to continue talking to him.
as he rolled up her pants to his calves, he asked “sirens are real?”
jin nodded. “of course they are! they live farther out into the ocean, usually where fisherman go.”
“are you a siren?”
“er, no, but i can sing-”
“jin!” two voices called. one had the same color hair as jin, while the younger boy had pink hair. jin’s expression changed as he recognized their faces.
“joonie, jimin, i told you not to come looking for me.” he clamored.
the younger boy, who was presumably jimin, rolled his eyes. “that doesn’t matter. you can’t talk to him.”
(y/n) wrapped his arms around himself at the mention of him, even if it wasn’t directly. was he getting jin in trouble?
the three boys started to quietly argue. the only thing (y/n) heard over jin mocking his brothers was that he was forbidden to talk to him.
“...i can go home?”
“please do.”
“no!” they said at the same time.
“joonie” looked like he was about to start yelling again, but jin cut him off.
“let me talk to him for a few more minutes. i swear i’ll come home after that.” he pleaded.
the two other boys looked at each other before sighing. “fine.” jimin said. they soon disappeared underneath the water.
as soon as they were gone, jin spoke. “i want to try something.” (y/n) cocked his head to the side, waiting for him to continue. “i want you to come underwater. just for a few seconds.”
“but it’s-”
“just a few seconds.” he interrupted. (y/n) sighed as he thought of an excuse to tell his father when he came back home why his clothes were wet.
he took a deep breath before lifting herself off the boat and into the water. he opened his eyes for a second, only for them to burn from the salt. jin felt his heart palpitate from the sight in front of him. the way his hair framed her face as it floated about, and-
he kicked up as fast as he could, gasping for air. jin shot up from underneath as well, confused on what had just happened.
“are you alright?” he asked, concern etched onto his face. as he caught her breath, he nodded, pulling herself back onto the swim platform.
shivering, he chuckled. “did you forget that i told you we can’t breathe underwater?”
jin swallowed, nervously laughing as he placed his hand onto her knee reassuringly. “yeah.”
(y/n) slightly flinched at the feeling of his hand. it was extremely cold. looking down, he saw how each of his nails were tinted a light blueish green, so was the skin around it. each of his fingers were slightly webbed. there were scales scattered around his entire arm, and body, none of them connected or in a pattern. he swallowed before he asked the question that came to his mind.
“were you ever a human?”
for a second, jin was slightly stunned. he wasn’t sure why, until he realized that he didn’t actually know the answer to this question.
playing his confusion off, he shrugged. “probably not. but then again, i could’ve been.” (y/n) nodded. he forgot how cold he was until a strong gust of wind blew, and he felt like all the water in his clothes just froze, turning him into a popsicle.
“i’m gonna go, i don’t wanna get sick and not be able to see you for a while. i’ll see you later.”
jin swam away.
as jin swam back to where he and his brothers resided (which was a long way; they had to make sure they weren’t too close to any docks), the question (y/n) asked him invaded his brain. despite having no memories of being a human, he had been alive for a really long time, which meant he’d have a lot to remember.
jimin was leaning on a coral, speaking to a mermaid he’d probably seen on the side of the reefs. as soon as he saw jin, he waved her off and swam over to jin. she flicked her tail at him in annoyance.
“that wasn’t a few more minutes.” jimin mocked. jin rolled his eyes.
“i have a question.” jimin nodded at him to go on. “do you know if you were ever a human?”
jimin laughed. “i don’t know.” he shrugged. “even if i was, i like being a mermaid so much more.”
jin sighed at jimin’s unhelpful answer, and went to ask someone else.
each of his brothers shared the same the same answer, until he asked jungkook. jungkook was the youngest, only 206.
“i thought we all were?” he started. “i was. at least, i’m pretty sure. tae said he was too, and i remember joonie and yoongi saying they were, but it was a while ago. i think i was 160 when they used to talk about it.”
jin’s heart leapt with excitement when he finally got the answer he wanted. “how did you become a mermaid then?”
“joon and yoongi said they drowned, so i think i did too. the very first thing i can remember is struggling in a body of water.” jungkook shrugged. while jin was practically bouncing, jungkook seemed so nonchalant.
jin could not wait for the next time he saw (y/n).
“jeez, why are you soaked?! you better not catch a cold, i’ll never let you out again, so help me-”
(y/n) flicked water at his father. “someone sped past me, and i got splashed. i’m fine.”
his father tsked, and mumbled something about stupid boat speeders.
(y/n) continued to visit jin everyday up until november. it was really starting to get cold, and he knew there’d be absolutely no way he could convince his father to use the boat. he noticed he even hid the keys off the key rack on halloween night.
however, it was nearing the end of march. his dad agreed to let him start using the boat again now that it was getting warmer. it turned into a habit; going to visit jin. he had plenty of questions, especially about thanksgiving and christmas.
“i want to try something.” jin said.
“the last time you said that i almost drowned.” (y/n) chuckled.
the look that jin gave him in response was concerning, but he brushed it off.
“i want you to come underwater with me. i’m going to show you something.”
(y/n) was hesitant to say yes, but he did. jin’s sudden change of demeanor was honestly scary. “alright.”
he lifted himself off of the swim platform. while treading water, he asked him, “you remember i can’t breathe underwater, right?” jin nodded feverishly.
jin disappeared underwater. a tug on the pant of his leg told him to go underwater. he took a deep inhale, then followed jin into the water.
it was only a few seconds before the familiar feeling in his chest arose. he started to kick up, but jin pulled him back down. kicking harder, it almost seemed impossible to get to the surface. he opened his eyes for a quick minute, only to close them quickly because of how bad the water burned. he got a glimpse of jin’s expression, emotionless and nonchalant.
the pain in his chest was now burning and unbearable. (y/n) thrashed against jin pushing his shoulders down, but he didn’t budge.
starting to kick as hard as he could, his brain started to go into fight or flight mode. he needed to breathe, now, and if she didn’t-
(y/n) inhaled. the water burned his throat, mouth and nose. jin’s hands had yet to leave his shoulder.
was no one near? could nobody see him?
the water in his mouth begged to be let out, so he did. he didn’t feel like he was in water anymore, and he couldn’t feel jin pressing on his shoulders. he opened his eyes, and the last thing he saw was jin.
jin waited a couple seconds. trying to recall what jungkook told him, he couldn’t remember if jungkook said how long it took for him to become a mermaid. was this going to work?
he wanted (y/n) to be a mermaid too. they’d be able to hang out all the time, and his brothers wouldn’t be on his case for talking to a human anymore.
after almost a minute, jin started to panic. (y/n) wasn’t moving.
“jesus, jin, what’d you do?” a voice called. he turned to see jimin staring at him.
“jungkook told me that-”
“you killed him.” jimin blurted.
jin nervously chuckled. “no, no, jungkook said that he drowned when he used to be human, that’s how he became a mermaid. i just need to wait.” he reassured himself.
“you killed him, jin.”
jn stayed with him until the next morning’s sunrise, when he saw a boat about the same size as (y/n)’s with a bright light packed with people, one of them looking similar to (y/n). his skin had turned a grayish color, and he had floated to the surface of the water already.

jn stayed with them until the next morning’s sunrise, when he saw a boat about the same size as (y/n)’s with a bright light, packed with people, one of them looking similar to (y/n). their skin had turned a grayish color, and they had floated to the surface of the water already.

there was nowhere (y/n) felt safer than the ocean. for some, they deathly afraid of it, vouching to never go past the sand bank. she had grown up on the ocean. her father was a sailor, and would consistently take their family out on the sea starting in may.
today was the last day her father would be taking his family out for the rest of the year. every september, he swore it got cold, and he didn’t want any of his family getting sick.
(y/n) nuzzled herself into the breeze, trying to take in as much as she could before the next 9 months. “it’s doesn’t even start to get cold until october. we’d have at least two weeks more out here.” she complained. her father leaned against the rail next to her.
“i’ve told you this since you were born, (y/n), i don’t want any of you getting sick.”
(y/n) rolled her eyes. “germaphobe.”
“is that a bad thing?”
(y/n) laughed and rolled her eyes, pushing herself off the railing. she sat down on the cushioned seats in the stern cockpit, pulling out a book she brought with her.
something gleamed in the corner of her eye. she quickly shut the book and set it down in the seat next to her, standing up. walking down into the stern, she knelt down, making herself closer to the water.
at first, (y/n) figured it was a pod of dolphins, but then she remembered that dolphins weren’t green.
“hey, (y/n)? i’m going to go check on your mother in the cabin, alright?”
(y/n) silently nodded, keeping her focus on the water.
the boat slightly dipped.
“aren’t they?” (y/n) shook her head violently.
he sighed. then, he did a back flip in the water, showing off his tail, slightly flicking it to splash her.
“i’m jin. i’m not supposed to be talking to you, because you’re a human, but i thought you were really pretty, so i left my brothers when they weren’t paying attention to talk to you.”
(y/n) felt blood rush to her cheeks. she shook her head once again. “you need to slow down. you can’t not just hit me with these types of things all at once… i mean, you’re a mermaid, you called me pretty, what else is there? the loch ness monster is real?”
“i-”
“please don’t answer that.”
(y/n) sat up on her knees. “you can’t be real. there’s no way.”
jin went underwater for a few seconds. he pursed his lips and cursed under his breath. “i have to go. come out here tomorrow, i’ll find you.”
and with that, jin disappeared into the water.
(y/n) had to pursue his request to meet him once again the next day. she had so any questions, and they’d never be answered if she didn’t go to see him.
“can i borrow the boat? i remember how to drive it and everything, and yes i’ll wear a life jacket, even when i’m on the boat. and i won’t stay in the water for too long, either.”
her father looked scrambled for a second as she answered all the questions he had yet to ask, but she knew he would ask them anyways.
“i mean… as long as you follow the rules. go ahead. the keys are on the mantle.”
(y/n) ran as fast as she could to the dock, where they left the boat the night before.
it wasn’t long until she saw the same flash of green as she did yesterday. she got closer to it before stopping the boat.
jin didn’t hesitate to slightly lift himself up with his elbows onto the swim platform.
“you came back!” he cheered.
before sitting down, (y/n) rolled up the cuffs of her jeans and dipped her legs into the water. “of course i did. d’you really think i’d miss a chance to talk to a mermaid?”
jin’s eyes slightly widened, before he beamed at her.
“two hundred?” she crossed her ankles over one another. “how old are you?”
jin furrowed his eyebrows. “400...412? no! i’m 413.” he said. (y/n)’s eyes widened.
“oh, geez.” she whispered.
(y/n) didn’t get to ask any more questions. jin was so curious; he asked so many, and time went so fast, the sun was already setting.
she had never seen someone look so sad when (y/n) explained to him that she had to go home, otherwise her father would be worried.
“you’ll come back tomorrow though, right?” he asked. (y/n) chewed the inside of her cheek.
“maybe. i’m not sure if my dad’ll let me borrow the boat again. if he says yes, i promise i’ll come, okay?”
jin grinned and nodded, before he dove back underwater, flicking his tail as a goodbye.
surprisingly to her, (y/n)’s dad say yes. she set an alarm for early that morning, 7 am (which was definitely early to her), so she could spend as much time getting to know jin. you don’t get to meet a merman everyday.
it was colder than normal, probably because it was a little earlier in the morning. throwing a light jacket on, she ran out the door before anyone else in her family was awake.
jin was waiting for her only a little out from shore. her eyes widened as slight panic arose in her chest.
“jin! what if someone saw you?” she exclaimed.
he shrugged nonchalantly. “i was trying to get away from my brothers, and since they’re frightened to come close to the shore, i came here. besides, it’s not like i was near a dock, and if i saw someone, i’d just go back underwater for a bit.”
that wasn’t enough to convince her. “and if they saw your tail?”
jin shrugged once again. “they’d just think i’m a siren. sailors like your dad tend to forget that sirens aren’t the only species with a tail like mine.”
(y/n) stayed silent as she drove the boat farther out, jin trailing behind. she waited until the anchor was down to continue talking to him.
as she rolled up her pants to her calves, she asked “sirens are real?”
“that doesn’t matter. you can’t talk to her.”
(y/n) wrapped her arms around herself at the mention of her, even if it wasn’t directly. was she getting jin in trouble?
the three boys started to quietly argue. the only thing (y/n) heard over jin mocking his brothers was that he was forbidden to talk to her.
“...i can go home?”
“please do.”
“no!” they said at the same time.
“joonie” looked like he was about to start yelling again, but jin cut him off.
“let me talk to her for a few more minutes. i swear i’ll come home after that.” he pleaded.
the two other boys looked at each other before sighing. “fine.” jimin said. they soon disappeared underneath the water.
as soon as they were gone, jin spoke. “i want to try something.” (y/n) cocked her head to the side, waiting for him to continue. “i want you to come underwater. just for a few seconds.”
“but it’s-”
“just a few seconds.” he interrupted. (y/n) sighed as she thought of an excuse to tell her father when she came back home why her clothes were wet.
she took a deep breath before lifting herself off the boat and into the water. she opened her eyes for a second, only for them to burn from the salt. jin felt his heart palpitate from the sight in front of him. the way her hair framed her face as it floated about, and-
she kicked up as fast as she could, gasping for air. jin shot up from underneath as well, confused on what had just happened.
“are you alright?” he asked, concern etched onto his face. as she caught her breath, she nodded, pulling herself back onto the swim platform.
shivering, she chuckled. “did you forget that i told you we can’t breathe underwater?”
jin swallowed, nervously laughing as he placed his hand onto her knee reassuringly. “yeah.”
(y/n) slightly flinched at the feeling of his hand. it was extremely cold. looking down, she saw how each of his nails were tinted a light blueish green, so was the skin around it. each of his fingers were slightly webbed. there were scales scattered around his entire arm, and body, none of them connected or in a pattern. she swallowed before she asked the question that came to her mind.
“were you ever a human?”
for a second, jin was slightly stunned. he wasn’t sure why, until he realized that he didn’t actually know the answer to this question.
playing his confusion off, he shrugged. “probably not. but then again, i could’ve been.” (y/n) nodded. she forgot how cold she was until a strong gust of wind blew, and she felt like all the water in her clothes just froze, turning her into a popsicle.
“jeez, why are you soaked?! you better not catch a cold, i’ll never let you out again, so help me-”
(y/n) flicked water at her father. “someone sped past me, and i got splashed. i’m fine.”
her father tsked, and mumbled something about stupid boat speeders.
(y/n) continued to visit jin everyday up until november. it was really starting to get cold, and she knew there’d be absolutely no way she could convince her father to use the boat. she noticed he even hid the keys off the key rack on halloween night.
however, it was nearing the end of march. her dad agreed to let her start using the boat again now that it was getting warmer. it turned into a habit; going to visit jin. he had plenty of questions, especially about thanksgiving and christmas.
“i want to try something.” jin said.
“the last time you said that i almost drowned.” (y/n) chuckled.
the look that jin gave her in response was concerning, but she brushed it off.
“i want you to come underwater with me. i’m going to show you something.”
(y/n) was hesitant to say yes, but she did. jin’s sudden change of demeanor was honestly scary. “alright.”
she lifted herself off of the swim platform. while treading water, she asked him, “you remember i can’t breathe underwater, right?” jin nodded feverishly.
jin disappeared underwater. a tug on the pant of her leg told her to go underwater. she took a deep inhale, then followed jin into the water.
it was only a few seconds before the familiar feeling in her chest arose. she started to kick up, but jin pulled her back down. kicking harder, it almost seemed impossible to get to the surface. she opened her eyes for a quick minute, only to close them quickly because of how bad the water burned. she got a glimpse of jin’s expression, emotionless and nonchalant.
the pain in her chest was now burning and unbearable. (y/n) thrashed against jin pushing her shoulders down, but he didn’t budge.
starting to kick as hard as she could, her brain started to go into fight or flight mode. she needed to breathe, now, and if she didn’t-
(y/n) inhaled. the water burned her throat, mouth and nose. jin’s hands had yet to leave her shoulder.
was no one near? could nobody see her?
the water in her mouth begged to be let out, so she did. she didn’t feel like she was in water anymore, and she couldn’t feel jin pressing on her shoulders. she opened her eyes, and the last thing she saw was jin.
jin waited a couple seconds. trying to recall what jungkook told him, he couldn’t remember if jungkook said how long it took for him to become a mermaid. was this going to work?
he wanted (y/n) to be a mermaid too. they’d be able to hang out all the time, and his brothers wouldn’t be on his case for talking to a human anymore.
after almost a minute, jin started to panic. (y/n) wasn’t moving.
“jesus, jin, what’d you do?” a voice called. he turned to see jimin staring at him.
“jungkook told me that-”
“you killed her.” jimin blurted.
jin nervously chuckled. “no, no, jungkook said that he drowned when he used to be human, that’s how he became a mermaid. i just need to wait.” he reassured himself.
“you killed her, jin.”
jn stayed with her until the next morning’s sunrise, when he saw a boat about the same size as (y/n)’s with a bright light packed with people, one of them looking similar to (y/n). her skin had turned a grayish color, and she had floated to the surface of the water already.
