Bruce comes back from his time abroad, but he comes back wrong. Before he decides to be the Bat, Alfred is subject to any number of vague horrors within the walls of the Manor. A new ghost guarding the premises, despite still breathing.

Bruce takes to wandering the halls silently at night. Alfred catches him more than once, and gets horrible secrets whispered to him. Things he watched others do in his time away that he was powerless to stop. Stories of the horrible people he surrounded himself with, and the muck he dug himself through.

Bruce sits silent vigil outside of Alfred's door and when asked, mumbles something about, "just in case," before promptly disappearing around a corner. He leaves no trace.

The Bat brings life back to him.

When Jason comes home, he comes home wrong. The whispers start again. He wakes to another young master bolt upright outside of his door. Another whisper of, "just in case."

Bruce is jarred back into his silent haunting of the manor halls.

Alfred never asks again.
