a cute study abroad story from my history teacher

so his friend goes to Germany to study abroad for 3 months, right? and she’s studied German in school, but she certainly isn’t fluent, and she never put a ton of effort into it, just a normal amount. And when she gets to Germany, her host family doesn’t speak English. at all. not a word. two adults and four children and none of them are speaking english. it’s absolute hell to get by, she’s constantly gesturing and enunciating and having to speak perfect German (they weren’t very good at understanding her unless it was perfect) and it’s three tiring months of nonstop German action. and on the last day they’re sitting at the dinner table and the father turns to her and says in wonderfully fluent english, “so I’d say your German’s improved quite a bit since you got here.”

Like. Look at the movement of the water. The color. They’re not in a tank. That’s the motherfucking ocean. Or at least, a large closed off area in the ocean. The man in the video is on some sort of raft.

But those dolphins know the dude well enough to beach right next to him, and while I’m no expert in dolphin-ese, I know enough to make a pretty solid guess that those dolphins are trying to communicate with that clarinet (dolphins have their own languages! And I think the fast, lilting notes of the song combined with the clarinet’s natural sound mimics a dolphin’s clicks and chirps pretty well, all things considered)

So what in the Sam Heck is going on here???

So, back in 2014, there was this controversy surronding a politician called 김무성 (Kim Moo Sung) and his “노룩패스” (No Look Pass). He basically threw his luggage without looking. The controversy was made to shed light on male entitlement in Korea, especially coming from middle-aged men.

In the 2016 drama Age Of Youth 2 (청춘 시대2), there was this scene when Senior Yoon arrived at the airport, and behind her, you could see something familiar. (https://youtu.be/GOx848GampM, fast forward to 1:03).

I love the fact that it’s so discrete and so easy to miss for someone who’s not familiar with Korean politics/news. This shows that it’s hard to fully understand the jokes/references from a foreign drama if you’re not open to learning about the country.
