001.  PHYSICAL IMPRESSIONS.

     in his youth, raphael is sturdily built with powerful legs and well-toned arms that mark him as a manual laborer but also as a man who thrives off of an active, physical lifestyle. he stands at an average height, is well tanned, and speaks at an even, slightly raspy register with a thick, new york italian american accent (think a watered down sweet-boy version of deniro). the backs of his hands are subtly raised with thick veins and white scars from where teeth have nicked knuckles in fist fights. he uses his dark doe brown eyes to disarm, but their lazy lids can often contribute to an aloof emission especially when he becomes reticent. he has a head full of unruly thick curls that he rarely attempts to tame unless he’s premiering a new suit. a few tattoos hide under his clothes (more on this to come). he carries himself with set shoulders and has a looseness to his gait, leading with his right. as he ages, most noticeably after prison, his muscles gain more bulk and he becomes almost bull-like in stature. 

    his wardrobe is consistent with his financial securities - in the beginning of raphael’s life, his wardrobe is sparse, mismatched, ill-fitting, and worn. as he rises to a higher status amongst the dealers of his neighbourhood and secures financial stability, he gets himself a few nicer outfits (namely clean dress shirts, boots, etc) to wear with whatever money he has left over. his mother approves and tells him he looks “professional” but this contributes to a guilt about his income source. these patterns follow him through his life in new england but when he makes the move to california, his clothing reverts to a laid-back, ragtag style with more colour, reflecting the vibrancy of a new environment and life. when it comes to facial hair, he alternates between a light beard and a cleanshaven face for staggered periods throughout his life. typically, him shaving or opting not to is the sign of a shift in his life whether emotional or financial.

   when interacting with others while on business with the mob, he uses physical contact as a communicator of status and physical strength. having learnt the technique from experiencing his father’s similar behaviour as a young teen, raphael intimidates through firm one-hand grabs on shoulders, headlocks, and grabbing ears. however, with people he is unfamiliar with, he tends to avoid physical contact as much as possible. in the company of friends, he is much more playful and prone to wrestling, while with women he follows a strict ‘hands-off’ philosophy as encouraged by his mother.
