it  isn’t  often  you  saw  a  stranger  quite  like  him,  even  wondering  the  corridors  of  the  avengers  hq.  wanda  tries  not  to  stare;  she  knows  what  it’s  like  to  the  subject  of  it.  though  her  other - ness  was,  at  least  on  most  days,  hidden  inside.  but  she  can’t  help  but  notice  he  appears  lost   ------   though  perhaps  just  contemplative. 

❛      are  you...  all  right?      ❜      she  stops  by  his  side,  blinking  up  at  him  with  curious  abandon  despite  all  her  best  efforts.  he’s  lovely,  in  an  other - wordly  way.  even  if  that  other  world  is  the  ocean   ------   it’s  as  alien  as  any  outer  planet,  she’s  heard  it  said.

JOINING  VON  STRUCKER  &  CONDITIONS  UNDER  HYDRA.

okay  i  think  this  is  something  that’s  going  to  be  important  to  address.  because  i’ve  seen  so  much  hate  for  this  whole  arc  on  the  terrifying  site  and  i’m  going  to  address  the  way  it  happened  for  my  wanda.  i  get  why  there’s  hate,  i  do.  because  hydra  are  essentially  a  nazi - funded,  nazi - originating  organisation  with  gross  beliefs  and  motives.  and  wanda,  my  wanda  at  least,  is  mixed  jewish - romani  heritage.  it  doesn’t  make  sense  she’d  ever  join  such  an  organisation  responsible  for  persecuting  her  people.  it  doesn’t  make  sense  either  of  them  would. 

unless,  of  course,  they  didn’t  know. 

so,  the  twins  at  the  end  of  winter soldier  were  transcripted  as  being  thirteen - or - fourteen  years  old.  i  want  to  make  that  very  clear.  in  my  canon  around  fourteen  was  the  age  wanda  and  pietro  entered  the  program.  in  the  years  previously  they  had  been  living  rough  after  their  parents’  deaths  at  the  hands  of  war.  these  were  two  orphans,  trying  to  survive  on  their  own,  with  no  source  of  consistent  shelter,  food,  water  or  education.  they  were  used  to  travelling  the  country;  and  other  eastern - european  countries,  but  without  documentation  became  all  but  trapped.  they  threw  themselves  into  protests  against  the  use  of  non - sanctioned  weapons  against  people  they  considered  their  people.  pre - teens,  really,  children  barely  able  to  understand  anything  bar  the  pain  they  could  see.

 von  strucker  presented  himself  as  a  saviour.  hydra’s  name  was  never  even  mentioned;  but  even  if  it  had  been,  the  twins  would  know  nothing  of  it.  i  shouldn’t  have  to  explain  that  character  knowledge  = / =  audience  knowledge.  wanda’s  own  motivations  to  join  were  two - fold,  both  altruistic  in  order  to  save  the  country,  and  vengeful,  to  take  out  all  her  pain  on  stark.  a  misplaced  blame,  of  course.  she  was  suffering  and  her  people  were  suffering.  but  the  comparison  of  herself  to  steve  is  not  so  wrong.

when  they  first  entered  the  program  the  mind - stone  was  not  in  the  possession  of  von  strucker  for  the  first  few  months.  these  months  entailed  of  intense  experimentation.  these  experiments  induced  great  mental  torture  and  physical  exhaustion.  wanda  often  had  second  thoughts,  due  to  the  pain,  exhaustion  and  the  restrictions  placed  upon  seeing  and  speaking  privately  with  her  brother.  however,  von  strucker  used  a  mixture  of  manipulation  and  discipline  to  counter  any  dissent.  he  magnified  their  hatred  of  the  avengers,  gas  lighted  and  guilted  them  about  the  protection  of  sokovia.  cells  had  no  windows  and  were  always  locked.  information  from  the  outside  world  was  restricted.  the  twins  were  strongly  monitored  and  only  allowed  out  under  guard,  for  experimentation.  one  attempt  at  escape  was  made  early  on.  it  did  not  go  well.  they  may  have  walked  into  the  cage  as  willingly  misinformed  children;  but  it  was  still  a  cage.  with  naught  else  to  focus  on  but  her  own  pain,  wanda’s  mind  warped,  became  obsessed  with  vengeance. 

it  was  a  beautiful  cycle. von  strucker  caused  them  pain,  they  blamed  the  avengers. 

the  twins  knew  nothing  of  the  over - arching  motives  of  von  strucker  nor  his  organisation.  wanda  would  not  have  been  able  to  discern  it  with  telepathy  since  the  mind  stone  was  still  in  his  possession;  and  her  powers  were  still  new  and  forming,  it  was  unknown  her  power  over  it.  this  is  clear  as,  as  soon  as  wanda  realises  ulton  wants  mass  destruction,  she  is  aghast  and  unsure.  she  only  wants  the  death  of  those  she  considers  her  enemies;  the  false  gods,  the  lying  martyrs;  the  avengers.  had  she  known  of  hydra’s  plans;  this  wouldn’t  have  shifted  anything.

   …well, this was awkward. not to mention unexpected—as old of a movie as it was ( to him & only him, apparently, but in his defense he was on the young side ), it was wildly popular to kids of their age. unless that wasn’t true for kids who hailed from… wherever she was from. peter was too new to the avengers roster ( he is an avenger, right? right?! ) to know much about anyone other than captain america & iron man, heroes he’d been fans of for a long time. in truth, he barely knew anything about the girl other than her name… and the fact that she could definitely very easily crush him in a fight. ‘well… okay, i mean——’ cue the cover-up of just a tiny bit of disappointment. this was going to sound so boring without the star wars-related extended metaphor to go along with it. ‘i haven’t had my powers for very long. six months, at most.’

she  regards  him  with  relief.  no  heart  breaking,  yet,  he’s  still  in  one  piece.  and  the  star  wars  metaphors  she  wasn’t  understanding  have  given  way.  perhaps  he  thinks  it’s  rude  to  make  his  shock  known;  she  shakes  her  head,  trying  to  make  him  more  comfortable.       ❛      my  brother...      ❜      she  pauses,  as  if  not  expecting  the  words  to  hurt.  they  still  do.       ❛      ------   pietro  liked  it,  so  i’ll  just  guess  you  have  interesting  tastes  like  him.      ❜      she  laughs,  a  light,  high  sound  that  fades  as  he  explains  his  point  and  it  has  her  brows  rising  in  admiration.        ❛      zhat  long?  you’re  very  skilled,  zhen,  peter.  after  six  months  i  vas  still...   clutching  my  head.      ❜      she  smiles,  sadly,  and  screws  up  her  nose.       ❛      zhe  migranes  are  getting  rarer,  though   ------   do  you  have  any  side  effects  like  zhat?      ❜

the  young  woman  looks  away,  as  if  to  avoid  the  kindness  being  offered  her  way.  she  tells  herself  she  doesn’t  need  it.  she  tells  herself  she  doesn’t  deserve  it.

it’s  not  a  sarcastic  question,  but  less  an  open  one  than  it  might  have  seemed.  all  innocence  has  been  stripped  away  from  her,  by  war,  by  needles  and  blood.  by  chaos  swirling  in  her  soul.  she  doesn’t  feel  clean,  sometimes.  but  neither  dirty.  she  just  feels…  strange.  her  emotions  have  been  a  storm  that  is  difficult  to  control;  but  she’s  getting  there.  wanda  takes  a  ruby - smoke  breathe  and  drops  her  eyes,  tension  dragging  her  shoulders  down.

the  woman   ——   no,  the  goddess’  words  are  kind.  but  kind  words  only  cause  pain  when  she  can’t  be  so  sure  of  them.  her  brows  knit  together  as  she  raises  her  eyes  towards  her  once  more.        ❛      if  you  knew  the  things  i’ve  done…  you  wouldn’t  vant  zhat  for  me.      ❜      she  has  killed  innocents;  even  accidentally  it  hasn’t  left  her.  it  burns,  it  hurts.  she  has  offered  herself  like  a  sacrificial  lamb  to  murderers  and  criminals.  she  has  opened  the  eons  and  shattered  a  piece  of  the  universe,  for  all  it  mattered.

it’s  an  adjustment  for  all  of  them.  they’re  not  runaways  now,  not  experiments,  not  assets.  they’re  avengers   ------   at  least  that’s  what  cap  and  nat  say;  but  it  always  feels  to  wanda  as  if  she’s  never  quite  there.  and  it’s  not  just  their  status  that  has  changed,  but  their  country,  their  class;  no  more  worrying  about  money  or  food  or  war...  and  she’s  growing:  stronger,  freer,  more  confident,  more  in  control.  but  it’s  a  slow  process.  an  easier  one  though  with  her  brother  her  side.  hard  to  ever  imagine  what  it’d  be  like  without  him  there   (   ------   as  if  that’d  ever  happen.   )

now  and  again  she  needs  him.  the  way  she  always  has  done.  she  can’t  help  it;  he  is  her  other  half  and  it  would  be  wrong  not  too.  it  could  be  anything;  a  failed  mission,  a  slip  in  training,  the  migraines  that  come  on  after  a  surge  in  her  powers.  and  that  particular  morning,  wanda  stalks  like  a  cat  through  the  dark  into  his  room,  aiming  to  find  him  half - asleep  by  the  dim  light  of  a  laptop  he  likely  forgot  to  switch  off.  hypocritical,  really,  for  the  privacy  lectures  she  gives  vision,  but  she  has  always  been  too  close  to  pietro,  and  him  to  her.  dependent,  maybe.  who  could  not  have  been  with  the  childhood  they  have  had?  

before  she  can  reach  him  she  feels  her  body  jolt,  and  she’s  tripping  over  something   ------   wanda  issues  a  curse  in  sokovian,  backing  up  and  looking  down.  clothes,  piled  across  the  floor.  not  pietro’s  style  at  all,  and  she’s   ------   pretty  sure  he’d  never  wear  a  thong  like  that.  wanda’s  lips  open,  but  no  sound  comes  out.  she’s  embarrassed  and  looking  for  escape  all  at  once.  he  has  someone  here.

she  get’s  the  feeling  that  she  is  about  to  blow  his  mind  and  break  his  heart  all  at  once.  it’s  not  exactly  a  difficult  feat,  when  you’re  wanda.  he’s  been  referencing  some  movie   (  ?  )   called  star  wars  for  a  while,  speaking  enthusiastically  and  quickly.  she  thinks  she’s  heard  of  it,  pietro  used  to  talk  about  it.  but  she  can’t  keep  up,  and  her  brows  raise,  as  she  gives  a  little,  blank  smile.

how  she  holds  herself;  it’s  awkward.  always  has  been.  there’s  power  growing  lately,  but  it  all  flees  and  flutters  away  as  soon  as  she’s  placed  on  a  mission.  she’s  made  mistakes;  the  type  that  dent  her  confidence  in  the  training  room,  but  cost  lives  in  the  field.  wanda  plays  idly  with  one  of  many  adorning  her  slender  fingers,  currently  wrapping  around  a  styrofoam  coffee  cup  addressed  to  ‘ circe ‘   (  she  can’t  help  it,  she  had  always  loved  those  legends  when  she  was  young.  )   what  she’s  doing  is  eliminating  anxiety,  otherwise  known  as  fidgeting   ------
