truly is there anything more iconic than lyra silvertongue asking the alethiometer if will is good or evil, it telling her he’s a murderer, and her going ‘oh thank god’
Today I asked one of my mutuals what they thought about the plural pronouns I want to use for Daemons, and we hashed a few things out together. So now, a group of Daemons has a few classifiers, according to the closeness in relationship between the Daemons' humans, and the Daemons themselves, ranging from strangers in a public place to family, related or not. Here is the list we came up with, on 5 levels from weakest relationship to strongest:
Crowd - a crowd of Daemons. This is generally used when referring to Daemons in a public place who you don't know or recognize at all and have probably never even seen before, ie. Cafe, library, restaurant, bookstore, plaza, elevator, etc. Complete and utter strangers. You don't know them, they don't know you.
Crush - a crush of Daemons. This is usually used in a place that a lot of people frequent very often, but who aren't particularly close to each other. Think school, college, work, mutually favoured places like a specific cafe or the local library. People you see often, but rarely if ever interact with. They're only familiar by their regularity - you've seen them before a lot, but never for long. Passing in the hallways, only ever seen them sitting in that corner, etc.
Crew - a crew of Daemons. This is used amongst people of varying closeness, who definitely interact on a regular basis. Could be coworkers you go out to drink with, classmates you always pick to do projects with, that group of kids+Daemons in the skate park who are teaching you and your Dae how to do a kick flip. Could also be friends you hang out with a lot, the cashier you always go to because they're nice to you, or your extended family who you like a lot.
Club - a club of Daemons. Immediate family, people you love a lot and interact with daily. Siblings, parents, your closest friends who are more like family to you anyways. Found family counts as well. People you love beyond anything. Your spouse's Daemon would become a club with yours, for example. Your siblings' Dae are a club with yours. "The Lalor club all tend to settle as smaller omnivores, don't they?" and so on.
Cast - a cast of Daemons. This is used for multidae, or people who are even closer than family - people and their Daemons who function more like one person with X amount of bodies than a bunch of people together. In other words people who, together, are more like multidae than separate people. Think Weasley twins level of sameness.
Feel free to think of more in the comments! I'm trying to keep the theme of starting them with a "c", if possible. I encourage everyone to make use of these! How close are you to your friends? What category would your Daemons fall into when interacting with others' Daemons?
Puma, Tiger, Jaguar, Leopard, Bobcat, Lion, Sand cat, Pallas’s cat, Snow leopard, Panther
Big Cats
… a remarkable family that has conquered the world. One family… 40 different faces. They thrive in every landscape… from the frozen north… to the driest deserts. From the most remote, barely explored places… to the heart of our modern world. These are the cats.
Silly His Dark Materials headcanon: daemons’ fur/feathers/skin does actually go through periodic changes. Any part of their body that comes off - fur, claws, antlers, teeth, molted feathers, molted skin for reptile daemons, exoskeletons for some invertebrates - disappears after like a day, but many species with fur do blow their coats in the spring. Fortunately daemons can’t trigger people’s allergies but sometimes there’s just fur everywhere.
Hester’s real winter coat didn’t start coming in until after she’d been in the north for a couple years. She sort of wishes it didn’t because Lee does the “make a second rabbit out of all the fur that comes off when brushing” joke Every. God. Damn. Year. and still thinks he’s absolutely hilarious.
Unsettled daemons don’t do this, and can give themselves seasonal coats at any time of year. If Hester thought she was a jackrabbit for years, there is someone out there, probably numerous people, whose “ermine” daemon settled in winter and they were very surprised to discover that an ermine and a stoat are the exact same animal.
rabs
I had brought this up in the discord once, but because Seven of Nine continues to live rent-free in my head, I would also like to bring this to daemon tumblr’s consideration:
Borg who are liberated from the collective don’t regain their daemons.
First Meeting
I was thinking about John Parry, and what it would be like to witness the manifestation of your dæmon. So I decided to imagine it for myself.

Dæmonism is just the advanced form of when you'd imagine an animal running alongside the car as a kid.
the dovekie (alle alle) or little auk is a small member of the auk family that lives in the atlantic ocean and breeds on arctic islands. just half the size of the atlantic puffin, they are vulnerable to a range of predators, in particular when in large breeding colonies on land. despite their small size, they are skilled swimmers and mainly feed on crustaceans. x
my three daemons are now going to have to fight to the death to determine who is allowed to be my One True Daemon
✨All multidae are valid ✨
Are you a multidae with two daemons? YOU ARE VALID ✨🌈
Are you a multidae with 12 daemons? YOU ARE VALID ✨🌈
Are you a multidae with a number of daemons that changes, two now, four last year, six tomorrow? YOU ARE VALID ✨🌈
Have you been multidae for years? YOU ARE VALID ✨🌈
Did you find out you are multidae yesterday? YOU ARE VALID ✨🌈
Don't let anyone tell you otherwise ✨🌈
I love you
