Why is art important?

Art is important because we are created in the image of the ultimate creator, making us the ultimate art. All life is centered around art. God has made each one of us unique, just as all art is different from one another, and yet it is all considered art. A piece of art can be interpreted a numerous amounts of ways and yet can draw people closer to one another. There is no one culture, language, or any kind of limit, it’s for everyone. Art can tell stories, evoke emotion, and simply cause people to think. Art allows people to realize what they have in common as well as appreciate their differences.

How do the materials used to make art influence the meaning of the work?

The materials used in a piece can make it or break it, in my opinion. How an artist chooses to portray whatever message they want can come through very differently depending on what materials they choose to use. For a painter it can be the type of paint they use, or for a photographer it can be the way that they choose to edit their photos. No matter the case, every good artist is intentional.

Is unity necessary in an artwork?

I believe that there is always some sort of unity in artwork. Even pieces that are intentionally chaotic or messy, that’s order in itself. Without unity, when using any kind of medium in art, it would not make sense. The unity aspect comes in even in a chaotic piece when the artist is intentional with what they are creating, and what they are using to create.

What makes an artwork good or bad?

Many know the famous quote, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. In other words, when it comes to art, how good or how bad it is, is ultimately up to each individual. However, generally speaking, I think in order for art to be ‘good’, some key things that should be taken into consideration are, the artist’s original intention and execution. Ultimately, everyone’s personal opinion is going to be very individual because of the fact that we all have different past experiences. These experiences are what make up our thinking and have the mist post when it comes to our perspective.

What role does art play in our society? What role does are play in the church?

In today’s society and churches, art plays a really big role. Art has the ability to shift people’s mindsets, attitudes, and emotions. Whether we’re scrolling through Instagram, listening to a song, watching a tv show, or practically anything else, there is art everywhere. Even if we do not realize that it is always influencing us, it is. Anything that we see or hear is constantly being absorbed by our subconscious. As artists, we must be purposeful, intentional, and carful what we’re putting out into the world because it could greatly affect those around us.

In what ways can art be political? What does political art look and sound like?

I think that art can be political in many mediums. When thinking of political art, there are probably a good amount of people that would say political cartoons come to mind. That is a pretty self-explanatory way of what political art looks like. For me, when trying to think of what art might sound like, is simply music. There has been so much politics in music in the past, as well as the present. Due to our freedom of both speech and expression, we are literally able to artistically illustrate our personal political opinions in any and every way we’d like.
