People are always talking about how Din’s the oblivious one. Let’s think about this in another way - what if Luke is the one being clueless about feelings and such? Poor boy just doesn't have time to stop and think about that stuff - first Rebellion, then being a Jedi, always doing something for someone and never thinking about himself.
And there comes one handsome Mandalorian with a kid. Luke likes them both, and you know him, always ready to help someone and liking to spend time with people. But what if Din thinks that Luke is showing an interest in him and trying to make a move one him? Not that he is complaining.
All I’m saying is that Din thinks they’re dating and Luke is none the wiser. Bumping their heads together? That’s a friendly thing to do right? Din does this all the time with Grogu. When Din showed him his face for the first (official) time: he must trust him very much. Luke is so happy that he has a friend like that. Luke thinks about their friendship while Din starts to think about popping the question.
It all comes to and end when someone (Leia/Grogu/anyone) ask them about their relationship and it kinda goes like this:
Q: So how long have you been together?
Luke: No, no, we are just good friends.
And you can kinda hear Din’s heart breaking with his soft “oh”. He blames himself for thinking something was there when it was just Luke being friendly. Ahsoka did say that attachments are not for Jedi, he just thought…
But he is good at hiding his feelings, so he tries to stop thinking about that and focus on his son.
After some time Luke starts to notice that things are different. He can’t remember the last time he saw Din’s face, or heard him laugh fully out loud, not just being amused. He thinks that something must be wrong but when he tries to talk about this with Din he just brushes him off. And really, it's not like they're not talking like before, just that something is missing.
And then. Luke wants to bump their foreheads together, and Din just… stops him. Not forcefully, mind you, but firmly and tells him to never do this again. His voice is quiet and soft when he says this, but Luke feels like it physically hurts him to hear that.
After that Luke starts to think about their relationship and what it means to him. He realized that, without him noticing, he had fallen in love with Din and not really getting the difference just thought of them as friends. He is not sure what to do with this new information, considering that he never felt this way.
In short: both of them being the absolute dumbasses they are, just assume that the other one doesn't feel the same and to pine in silence.
