What is drone photography?
Drone photography means using drones to capture images from the air. So, we can get breathtaking aerial shots with drones. Nowadays, many businesses are using drones to capture aerial photos and videos, a unique way to advertise and showcase their services, for promotional purposes and many more.
Businesses involved in real estate can use these aerial views to attract their customers. These views can tempt and interest customers to look into the property due to the unique perspective and rare views that drone photography offers, providing a better and clearer view of the property compared to photos taken from the ground. Special events and functions can now be captured from a bird-eye view, taking in rare views and angles of the special occasion that can leave the audience with unforgettable memories of the joyous event.
Drones can also be used for performing useful inspections of construction sites or tanks, providing detailed and clear photos of the site. So, inspecting officers do not need to come to the site for inspection. Drones are compact in size, so they can enter constrained areas for inspections, places that were once difficult to reach for officers.
How Aerial photos were taken in the past
In the past, aerial shots have been expensive for normal people to afford, only filmmakers and people who had the money to afford them had the luxury of enjoying those views. However, these views would be done through expensive modes, using aerial vehicles such as helicopters and aeroplanes. Those methods of obtaining aerial shots have been quite troublesome in terms of the preparation needed, the cost involved and even the safety of the photographer on board the aerial vehicle.
Drone photography for aerial photos
That said, drone photography has been rising in trend as it has become much more affordable and convenient to take these aerial shots that were once expensive in the past.
Drones can scale huge distances quickly while also capturing clear images of the bird-eye view through advanced and high-resolution cameras installed in the drone. So, drones will be used to do things like inspecting, scanning the landscape for mapping, or just taking shots of aerial views much quicker than traditional methods.
With drones, we have less preparation to make as only the drone and a remote controller are required to control the drone. Drones operate at a tenth of the cost of a human aircraft, thus reducing the fuel and energy consumption and expenses associated with it. It also avoids safety issues, as no one needs to go to high ground or fly on aerial vehicles to get the best aerial shot.
Drone mapping services
Drone mapping refers to using drones to take many aerial images of a landscape and through the process called photogrammetry, the captured images are turned into a single complete image known as an orthomosaic. All the features in the orthomosaic will be scaled and geo-referenced. Photogrammetry software can also be used for determining the 3D characteristics of the captured environment, so the output from drone mapping can be used to create digital replicas of a landscape and can be used for reference.
MIRS Innovate a drone company in Singapore uses its drones to provide drone services for many customers. They also offer drone mapping services. Their services have been trusted and used by many customers coming from various industries such as construction and infrastructure, agriculture, energy, public safety, schools and even some government agencies. They discuss how drone mapping can be used and how useful it can be:
Construction sector
Land and depth measurements can easily be done using drone mapping instead of construction workers measuring the area. Construction workers would have to use equipment to accurately measure the area, making it a painstakingly long process. However, with drones, the process would be much faster, as the drone will just be scanning the area. Photogrammetry software can be used to easily measure the distance, measurements, and depth of each part in the location.
For mapping and surveying
Drone mapping can also be used for topographical purposes. The drone can gather accurate data on the landscape by just scanning, and the aerial shots can be converted to digitalized 3D models to replicate the actual area. These data can be useful for topographers to have a detailed study of the area, especially when the area is difficult to reach on foot or covers a very large area.
The drones that are used for providing drone mapping services have been installed with Drone Volume Calculation software. This software helps to measure stockpiles with high precision and accuracy. The drones will also be equipped with RTK (Real Time Kinematic) abilities, this allows the drones to take crystal-clear photographs of the stockpile. The RTK also provide real-time location data while it surveys and captures aerial images and videos from the site.
There are many more uses for drone mapping, and more have been discussed on the MIRS Innovate website. Visit their website for more information about the drone mapping services they provide and the amazing features that their drones have to allow better quality and detailed drone mapping of a landscape.
Façade drone inspection
It is very important to have regular inspections of the façade of a building. These inspections would help us to determine if the façade is deteriorating and requires maintenance or if it is needed shortly. The façade of a building needs to be stable and secure, ensuring that the building does not pose a threat to the safety of the public.
Though an inspection of a building would take much preparation and manpower. Inspecting officers have to look at the building carefully and ensure they scale the whole building with lifting equipment to hoist them up parallel to the building for better viewing. This may still be a practice for many. However, the process is slow as officers and engineers would have to install and assemble equipment on the building to hoist themselves up outside the building, prepare necessary safety harnesses and equipment to inspect buildings in safety and detail, and have to inspect the whole building. So, to make things quick and easy we can do a drone inspection.
Benefits of doing a drone inspection of facades
Fast and efficient process: Drone inspection makes it a fast process. Drones can scale large distances quickly, so no matter how wide and tall a building is, the drones can reach the height quickly at a steady pace. The drone can be controlled remotely to control where it needs to fly. Compared to the traditional method of using a lifting pulley system, where the officer needs to adjust the height every time while scaling the walls of the building, drones can smoothly fly up and easily capture pictures of the façade.
Cost-effective solution: This method of inspection would require much less equipment and manpower, thus reducing the cost of the inspection. The only thing needed would just be the drone and a remote controller to control the drone. The drone can also do the inspection much quicker than the traditional method thus making this a cost-effective way of inspecting facades.
Clear view of all areas in the façade: Drones can be equipped with high-resolution and quality lens cameras, allowing us to get a crystal-clear view of the façade. What’s more, the drones are small and compact in size compared to the traditional pulley system. So, we can use drones to inspect inner and constrained areas of the façade for a better and more thorough inspection of the building.
Avoids safety risks: In the traditional method, officers will have to scale up the building with the lifting pulley system, dangling up in the air for so long while they inspect the façade. They would be wearing a safety harness to protect themselves from a fall, however, anything dangerous can happen despite all the safety equipment in place. For example, the pulley system can get stuck, thus causing the officer stranded high in the air with just the system and harness in place for protection. Doing a drone inspection does not require anyone to be using the pulley system or dangle several meters above ground for inspection, therefore avoiding the safety risk that poses to an officer.
UAV Inspections in tanks
A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) also known as a drone can be used for many purposes such as taking aerial photos and videos of beautiful landscapes, and sceneries. It can also be used for advertisement purposes and even do UAV Inspection.
For example, when inspecting tanks, many companies owning those tanks would hire officers to inspect the tank. Tank access may require ropes, scaffolds, or even stairs. The officers would have to do a close inspection of the components in the tank, finding any abnormality and determining when the components may require maintenance in the future.
The whole process might be tiring, where the tank needs to be disinfected before it can be somewhat safe for the officers to enter the tank. After which, the engineers or inspection officers will climb down the tank for inspecting the machinery and components inside the tank. Despite it being disinfected or the officers wearing safety gear, uniforms, and harnesses there might still be traces of hazardous gas or chemical in the tank. The whole process would be dangerous, where the chance of an accident is high.
Other hazardous scenarios can happen, such as officers getting stuck while they are inspecting cramped and constrained areas, tripping down and falling and many other possible scenarios.
Using UAV Inspection services from MIRS Innovate
To avoid these issues, we can do a UAV Inspection offered by MIRS Innovate. This is where we use a drone to inspect the tanks instead of officers. With the use of drones, we can mitigate the dangers that are associated with letting these officers physically go down a tank which is dangerous in many ways.
MIRS Innovate’s drones are equipped with high-quality and advanced cameras, thus enabling us to get crystal-clear visuals of the inside of a tank. With just a drone entering the tank, it does not require much preparation needed compared to the traditional inspection. So, the tank does not require decontamination, thus making the process much faster. Drones can scale huge distances easily and quickly, so no matter how big the tank is, they can reach the end of the tank quickly while also capturing clear visuals.
What’s more, their drones can also be installed with unique and sensitive sensors that can help gather more detailed information about the status of the machinery and components in the tank. This information would further help to inspect whether the tank requires immediate or future maintenance.
Visit MIRS Innovate’s website for more information about their UAV Inspection services and many other drone services that the company provides.
Unmanned Aircraft Pilot License
An Unmanned Aircraft Pilot License (UAPL) is needed for legally operating drones in Singapore. Several factors are defined by the CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore), which requires you to have a professional drone license. To get the license, you need to receive essential training from UATO centres. UATO stands for Unmanned Aircraft Training Organization, they are drone training centres that have been approved by the CAAS.
Conditions defined by CAAS that needs the Unmanned Aircraft Pilot License for legal drone operation:
Drones that are used for commercial purposes or other purposes that are not recreational or educational, regardless of the drone’s weight will require a license
Drones that are used for either recreational or educational purposes, with a weight exceeding 7 kg require a drone license.
When a drone is indoors for a competitive race, tournament, or for an event that is attended by more than 50 individuals indoors would need to have a license.
However, if the drone is used indoors in a place that is not accessed by the public, you would not require a license.
As defined by the CAAS, individuals have to be at least 16 years of age to be eligible for applying for an Unmanned Aircraft Training License and to seek basic unmanned aircraft training. They also have to register for the civil personnel licensing system account to obtain the unique CAPEL personnel identification number that is needed for both theory and practical assessments.
Individuals would also have to pass the theory assessment before they can move on to the next assessment. The theory test will be administered by the Singapore Aviation academy. After successfully passing the theory test, you need to pass the practical assessment. The practical assessment would be conducted by the authorised flight examiner which is within the assessment organization (UATO).
Once an individual passes both assessments, they have to submit a UAPL application via the CAPELS. Upon approval, they can view their UAPL via the SGFlight mobile app.
A UATO-approved centre like MIRS Innovate provides courses which include theory and practical training sessions that abide by the approved syllabus that train candidates for obtaining the UAPL. Why do you need drone videography?
Drone videography is using drones to get aerial videography. Drone videography has been rising on the trend for many businesses, as not only does it give stunning visuals, but is also an affordable way to get those rare shots that can only be seen atop an aeroplane, helicopter, or mountain. What was once an expensive way of videography can now be done by almost anyone with a drone. So, when we say that drone videography is growing in trend, that’s because it has proven to have many uses for many of us.
Benefits of using drone videography
Provides a new way of videography
With the use of drones, it enables you to take breathtaking visuals of landscapes and buildings, offering a new perspective to everything we see from the ground floor or a few floors up. So, you can use drones to showcase an aerial view of a real estate project, construction site, a special event and many more. Besides, an aerial view can attract your target audience, as they can see a new perspective of the landscape.
Cost-effective solution
Drone videography is much more affordable than using expensive ways such as using helicopters or aeroplanes. Instead of renting these full-scale expensive aerial vehicles, drones can be purchased, or companies can use drone services provided by drone companies at a much lower cost. This also reduces the energy and fuel consumption involved as drones operate at a tenth of the cost of human aircraft and reduces expenditures.
A fast and effective way of gathering data
Drones can scale large distances quickly, and also can operate in harsh conditions. So, for industries like construction and infrastructure, you can perform an inspection of the site using drones. drones can reach the height of the building quickly, able to fly through constrained and difficult-to-reach areas to get valuable data on the construction progress. Thus, making the inspection a fast process. It can also be used for gathering data for disaster preparation, inspecting landscapes for future development etc.
Get a clear and unobstructed view
As the videography is taken from the sky, taking videos of difficult-to-view areas would be possible and much easier. So, drones allow for taking clear views of the landscape without needing to worry about the view being obstructed by trees, buildings, and other obstacles on the ground level. In a business prospect like real estate, customers get to see a better view of the property surroundings, thus increasing the chances of gaining their interest in your services and the property displayed.
Interior photography
Interior photography is taking professional photos of indoor spaces, from the interior of the rooms to the pieces of furniture adorning the room. The knowledge to shoot photos of the interior is essential for other multiple fields like real-estate photography, architectural photography, and architectural photography and interior design photography.
Some tips for a good interior photography
Switch off the lights
Photography mainly involves the presence of light; the right type of lighting is important to get the correct type of visuals you want to see in the picture. Artificial lighting can disrupt the light visuals of the interior, it can throw off the white balance, casting distracting shadows, thus making the room look dimmer and dull in the photo. Use natural light instead to light up the interior. You can use flash lighting to add supplemental lighting to light up the space while shooting.
Pay attention to the lines of the interior
Interior photography mainly focuses on the horizontal and vertical lines of tight and small spaces. So, when shooting an interior space, ensure that the room has well-balanced straight lines of walls and windows. A room that has a slight angle in the corner can distract viewers as it disrupts the composition and the flow of the angle that the photo was shot.
Tidy and clean up the space
It is common sense that the interior should look tidy and pleasant to the eye, catching the target audience’s interest. A room full of clutter and no tidiness is never appealing to anyone. So, make sure that the interior is styled and presented before the shoot. For example, removing tangled electrical cords, and hiding things like shoes and remotes. Dusting furniture, walls, and windows, overall making sure that the room looks the best before the shoot.

Construction surveying with drones
Drone construction surveying means that drones are used for surveying a construction site. Construction and building companies need to use drones for better and more efficient surveying of construction sites.
Reasons to do drone construction surveying:
Able to do surveys quickly
The drone can scale distances very quickly, so even if the construction site is pretty large, the drone would be able to reach those distances much more quickly than on foot. Compared to inspecting officers surveying the site, they have to walk long distances, walk up and down in constructed buildings to survey the progress. However, using a drone would be in the air and is small in shape, so it will not disrupt the construction operations that are taking place, and can also scale high-rise buildings much more quickly and easily while giving clearer visuals.
Able to capture constrained areas
The drones can also fly into areas that are constrained and difficult to reach. In the traditional method, officers may have to wear safety harnesses and other equipment to get a view of that area, making the whole process slow. However, with using drones, it can be flown into these areas easily and capture the required views of the area.
A clearer in-depth view of the site
Drones can be equipped with high-quality and advanced cameras to get a clear view of the components of a site. Moreover, the drone can also be installed with unique sensors that can detect more detailed information about structural components and other useful data from the site.
Prevent safety risks and threats
It is common knowledge that a construction site can pose many different safety risks for anyone present in that place. As drones are used for surveying, officers would not have to be on the site for the surveying. Drones can scale high areas and pass-through nooks and crannies for surveying those constrained areas. So, officers would not have to go through those difficult-to-reach areas for surveying the interior and its components, thus preventing the safety risks involved in reaching into these dangerous parts of the construction sites.
Regular construction surveying is possible
As the use of drones has become easier to do surveying of the construction site, contractors can conduct regular construction surveys. This allows them to have updated knowledge and documentation on the progress of the construction works. This enables them to make better decisions to improve progress, allocate workloads, manage construction supplies, etc.
Interested in using drones for construction surveying? Look for MIRS Innovate, a drone company offering drone construction surveying services among a variety of other drone services. Their services have been used by many clients coming from various industries such as construction and infrastructure, agriculture, energy, media, public safety, and even government agencies. So, it is guaranteed that they can handle any of your requests promptly and efficiently. Visit their website for more information about their drone construction surveying services.
Drone survey services
If you would like to have aerial surveys most cost-effectively, a drone survey is the one you should do. Traditionally, the idea of getting an aerial survey was expensive, using expensive aerial vehicles like helicopters and aeroplanes. Some industries like the geospatial and construction sector, need to have an overview of how the landscape looks before starting to plan and design buildings and structures on the landscape or designing maps. So, in these cases, they have to spend that sum to get an overall aerial view of the place.
Now, in this time when the use of drone technology has been increasing, you can use drones to do a drone survey of a landscape at a much lower cost. Drones have many uses now, making them an affordable solution for many businesses to improve or enhance their business operations.
Doing a drone survey significantly decreases the time taken to take the necessary aerial photos and videos of the ground, compared to doing it in a helicopter. Drones can scale large distances much more quickly than a helicopter, thus completing the aerial survey quickly.
Using drones can also reduce the cost of the whole aerial survey as you can just hire drone specialists to do the job for you, or your company can purchase the drones to do so. Do note that for operating drones, you require a UAPL (Unmanned Aircraft Pilot License) to operate the drones legally in Singapore for commercial purposes. Also, it can prevent the need for risking safety to take aerial shots from an aerial vehicle.
