#I’m fairly sure Steve was ashamed of his time with the USO#not in the sense that he was doing anything wrong#but that he could have been doing so much more#So much happened while he was on tour#the Allies took Sicily in the biggest amphibious operation to date#he knows now what he can do#how he can help#and instead he was dancing in tights#I think it eats at him#could he have made a difference?#could he have saved lives?#and every time he sees a camera he’s reminded of being on stage#of making those films#of being safe when he should have been out there fighting (via boopboopbi)

It’s all perspective. If Steve was a guy dreaming of becoming a star and moving to Hollywood, then the USO show would have been a way to harness his own desires to serve the greater good.

But Steve’s never been an actor. He’s always wanted to be the guy who could stand up for the little guys and make bullies back down. Steve HATES unfairness. Probably because most of his life was ridiculously unfair and he didn’t need bigger kids pushing him down and taking his lunch money when the world was already doing such a great job of kicking him in the teeth. So he fights back against whatever he can. He can’t punch asthma or scoliosis or tuberculosis, but he can and will punch a jerk who’s trying to make life even harder on him. Or just on someone LIKE him. If you’re making the world a worse place for others, Steve Rogers will take you outside and teach you some manners, whether he physically can or not. That’s who he wants to be.

So of course it eats at him that he’s traipsing around on stage, surrounded by chorus girls when better men than him are lying in the cold mud being shot at. Just look at his face during the USO montage in The First Avenger. His smiles are all forced. He signed on to fight in the “most important battle of the war” and he got a cushy job and a silly costume. He’s miserable with himself. It’s probably why he doesn’t het into it with the 107 when they start heckling him. He agrees that he’s ridiculous.
