The worst person you could ever meet in your lifetime still has a favorite breakfast cereal.
I knew a rapist who was an absolute ride-or-die friend to his gamer bros. Like, give the last dollar from his pocket to a friend who got a flat tire, and then turn around and go rape a Freshman that evening.
I knew a vicious child abuser who wept like a baby when her dog died.
The nastiest human being on the planet nevertheless feels obscurely melancholy sometimes, or has high spirits when they step out doors on the first warm day of spring, or has opinions on their favorite TV show and which side the toilet paper should hang on and whether or not the room should be cold or warm when you go to sleep.
We're all still just people. Complex, with fully-realized interior worlds.
None of that will save you from becoming a monster, if you decide to do monstrous things.
None of it makes you exempt from the consequences of monstrosity.
Will I do more of these in the future? Hopefully yes, I have a storyboard in my notes for another scarian fic and the notes for my dnd campaign comic, so look forward to that (it’ll probably take a while tho, cuz uni)
The first time Scar met Grian, he was introduced by his laugh. A boisterous laugh that reached him and Gem long before either saw him. The kind of laugh you could always hear, even in a cacophony. The kind of laugh that made you helplessly grin without having to know what he was laughing at. It was loud and unashamed, such a contrast to Scar's usual snickers and silent laughter.
Scar had immediately followed the sound, needing to see where it came from and what kind of thing could draw a laugh that wonderful. He found Mumbo, covered in squid ink and looking supremely disappointed in himself, standing before a man who was on the ground trying to breathe in between wheezing giggles.
“What happened here?” Gem exclaimed with an accusation in her voice.
“He-, he,” the man on the ground started, words breaking past the helpless giggles, “I set up a trap. And he said-,” he peeled off into another round of giggles, one eye wiping a tear away as he lifted his head to look at Gem and Scar got to see his face in all it's glory, “and he said, 'I'm not an idiot Grian. I might be a bit daft sometimes, but even I wouldn't fall for something-, something like this.’” Grian gasped for air, “and then he-,” Those were the last words he managed to get out before losing his battle with his own laughter.
“Oh, I'm never going to live this down.” Mumbo bemoaned with ink dripping off him. The ink blended in with the black suit he wore and almost made it look like he was melting in shame. “I'm going to go home. I'm going to dig a hole.” He turned and began walking off. “And I'm going to bury myself there until no one remembers my name anymore. Goodbye to all of you.”
Grian scrambled to his feet so he could chase after the dripping man. “Wait, Mumbo. Mumbo, I still need your help.” The words were scattered with continued snickering and both Scar and Gem watched as the two went out of earshot.
