Black Mask (Open Starter)

Roman leaned back in his booth watching the party-goers enjoying his club. He enjoyed the sense of power he got from visiting his club every now and then. The nervous smiles, the flattery. All because they feared him, oh it was intoxicating. 

He had rather prided himself on only having the finest members of Gotham enter his club. Not allowing any riff-raff in. Only the best alcohol, singers, the best people. If he wanted something he got it. And he would make sure that anyone who got in his way would just disappear. 

Just as he was starting to enjoy himself Zsasz leaned in close and whispered into his ear. “We have a problem.”

Crimson Christmas (Open Starter)

Thomas gazed into the flames. Listening to the mixture of the crackle of the fire and the howling of the winter wind out side of his family home. December. A dark and depressing month for the man. Shorter, colder, darker days trapped in this rotting house. When the rest of the world was joyful and full of hope, he was reminded of the horrors of his past. He always felt trapped and so alone. Christmas just made this feeling worst. 

And he had brought them into into this hell. They did not deserve this. They were pure and innocent. And he had dragged them into the world of torturous loneliness. 

As he was lost in thought he felt a hand on his shoulder, causing the man to flinch in fright.

"Because that.... that's what you do... collect souls in preparation for another fight against heaven" he says his eye brows raised

"And how exactly would that work? you get me back to my time... how would you know back then that I owed you a favor?" he asks "Were you even on earth back in my time?" he asks frowning

"And.... what if I don't want to go back... I mean... indoor plumbing...." he says with a bit of a smirk

"Well you do have a point there" he admitted. "Not just the plumbing, but phones, cameras, the internet and lingerie..." Lucifer said loosing his train of thought for a moment. It had become far easier in this day in age to indulge in one of his favoured sins.

"What I do... Or did, is torture the damned. I am a jailer. Don't read too close into the propaganda, it leaves out quite a bit of what really happened" he sighed.

Thomas became rather hesitant to reply to her question. In truth he had been to a few states in America. Each visit had failed to get the funding he needed for his inventions. As he had travelled through State he had watched as his bank account dwindled. It was becoming a ticking clock for the man. Either he succeeded in getting investors in New York or fall back onto his sister's plan once more. No. He could not do that again. He could not continue the horror any further.

"Yes... Well, I have be to a few of the States around America" he admitted. "For business mostly. So I did not get much free time to explore the cities I was in."

"But there is no shame in not traveling. Especially when you live in New York of all places. It seems as though there are little gems from all over the world hidden in this city."

"Oh I see, that's a pity. I'm afraid I have no head for business," She said falling into dialogue that for young girls like her was almost scripted. Yet even as she fell into her assigned role she noted the hesitation and was intrigued by it. It spurred on what to her seemed an almost dangerous curiosity about the foreigner.

She smiled trying to smooth over any unpleasantness her prior inquiries may have stirred up. "Yes, it does. Will you stay long enough at least to sample some of what New York has to offer before you and your sister journey back home?"

Gently like Diana likely conspired how she could control Neptune's own tides, May considered how she might discreetly keep the Englishman on American shores a while longer. While unappreciated it was one of true geniuses of her character that she understood New York society so perfectly that she was able to make it yield to her without it having even realized it had.

"Yes, I hope to. As this is the last stop on my travels before returning to England" he said with a small nod. He could not go back empty handed. Either he would return to Crimson Peak with a check or a wealthy bride. One way or the other he had to get the family business off the ground with fresh funding.

"The only issue is that I am afraid I have a poor sense of direction. Would you be able to recommend me a guide?" Thomas asked flashing a charming grin. This was an old ploy that often worked. Most ladies such as this would recommend their single friends, whom would often he smitten with the exotic title Thomas had inherited. While he charmed them, Lucille would be able to weed out which was the easiest to gain money from. He hated this whole affair. But it needed to be done.

Thomas held out a narrow box with a dark purple ribbon tied around it. "Happy Christmas" he said softly. "I know it is not much. However please accept it as a token of my thanks for spending Christmas with me."

Inside was a long, sharp hat pin. The end had a dark red ruby with a cluster of small diamonds around it. Clearly a family heirloom of some sorts.

Katherine’s brows lifted in surprise, wide violet gaze flicking from the box, to him, and back again. “I-oh my.” She breathed accepting the box with carful enthusiasm. Confusion and delight took their turns waxing and waning over her features as she unbound the little box from its confines. Kat took a moment to tie the little ribbon on her wrist before removing the lid. Once her eyes met the trinket inside her smile became impossibly wide as she peered down at the pin. He couldn’t have possibly known that Katherine was a fan of smaller weapons that in many ways resembled the little pin. She was a collected them just as enthusiastically as she wielded them so she couldn’t help but chuckle as she took it out and turned it over in her hand. “Equal parts beautiful and dangerous.” She murmured mostly to herself before regarding him once more with a warm smile.

”I wasn’t able to go out to do any shopping due to the blizzard but if you allow me some time in your kitchen I can at least bake you something as a thank you for your thoughtfulness.”

"Oh-h, well I do not wish to trouble you. I expected nothing in return" he said with a nervous chuckle. Truthfully this had been his sister's plan. A way to pull her in closer, gain her trust. It was a false gesture of kindness. It made his stomach turn. Pretending to be a kind person, when he was nothing but a monster.

The pair could not afford such lavish gifts. However, they did have a few items of their mother's that they had yet to pawn or sell. Besides, Lucille hated most of these trinkets. Because they all reminded her of their horrid mother. Well, all accept the engagement ring.

Wide violets roved the haunting scene that opened up before her as her company guided the small woman through the threshold of his home. Everywhere she looked decay flirted with finery resulting in a queer but beautiful harmony. It was a living picture of the fading age of aristocracies. Her boots padded with soft squelching groans across the wooded floors as Katherine approached the center of the room, her attention finally lingering on the gaping maw above them.

Cascading down from the ceiling were tendrils of what looked to be overgrowth. Overgrowth that had long since withered but still seemed to reach down to her from above. Accumulating snow already was already beginning to coat the long slithering limbs as the new flakes drifted down towards her in mesmerizing swirls. Gazing up into the opening could easily make one forget that they were above ground at all. It was . . .beautiful in presentation but also inspired a sort of claustrophobia. Kat shivered,accusing the draft that the open ceiling allowed despite feeling something pawing at the back of her mind that said this was her first warning. Warning about what?

Thomas’ voice pulled her back from the surface, drawing her back to the dapper dark haired man just behind her.

Kats gaze lingering on the anxious wringing of his hands against that poor hat of his. Her usually sharp gaze softened as her eyes found his once more. Slowly her hand moved to gently rest on his, hoping to soothe the obvious nerves that seemed posses those large fumbling hands of his.

“Your skylight is lovely.” She assured him, a warmth in her reassurance but a teasing playfulness still lingering in her sentiment. “Far too many folks aren’t getting enough natural light now a days. All candle light and gas lamps. Well gas lamps for those who can afford them. There was. Time my family could hardly air to light the home with candles let alone dream of anything like this.”

She gestured to the room as a whole, her eyes sliding over there surroundings once more with quiet appreciation before returning to him with a soft smirk.

“You might have a bit of a leak though.”

After a quick wink she let her gentle hold on him fall away a she started towards the staircase nearest them.

“Could I trouble you just a bit longer and ask that you show me to my room?”

A true soft smile pulled at the corner of his lips. She was kind. The kind ones always made this so much more difficult.

Thomas gave her small nod, "Of course" he said warmly. He gently offered her an arm and began to move towards the stairs. As they walked up the old creaking stairs Thomas still felt his heart race with nerves. There was still a chance she would run, and tell all in high society of their situation. Destroying their already fragile standing.

He lead his guest up the stairs and down a dark hall way. As a child Thomas hated this hallway, the ominous carvings in the dark wooden archways gave him nightmares. As if they would come alive and devour him.

Thomas stopped at one of the doors and opened it with a black key. Allowing her to enter the room first. This one was the best maintained rooms in the house. The bedroom's design often reminded him of an old gothic church. With the faded gold leaf on the boarders of the ceiling and the slightly rusted hanging lamps. As well as the carved headboard that looked like it stepped out of a medieval illustration.

"There is a bath and rest room down the hall on the right" Thomas explained. "I would recommend to run the water for a moment before using the taps. The clay has stained the water a tad. So the water may turn red for a moment or two." he explained.

A New Opera - Phantom of the Opera (Open Starter)

Eric placed the bound pages on to the mangers' desk. They would find his new Opera first thing in the morning. That is if they were not hungover from partying all night with the understudies and dancers. Unprofessional. They were both idiots. Hopeful, they were smart enough to comply with his demands. After all, this Opera House should be run by someone like him, who loved the Arts. Not a pair of fools who only thought about money and their rank in society.

He had left a list with who he wished to be cast. And a letter with the consequences if they did not follow his instructions.

The Phantom swiftly walked out of the office. Moving towards one of the hidden passages near the stage. So he could slip silently back to his lair. As he moved through the shadows, he heard footsteps near by. Some one was here.

Adrian was a young man that worked with the costume designers, he made beautiful gowns and stunning suits for the leads. Fairly new to the opera house, early twenties, tall with flowing golden locks. His features pale and elegant. Heavenly handsome features and a smile that had the warmth of the morning sun. Despite his youth he was very talented, not just with making costumes but also a talented singer and musician. As he made his way down the hall to leave some designs at the office the blond softly sang to himself of one of the songs from a previous play.

His voice soft and gentle, as if it wasn't his place to sing and would get in trouble if anyone overheard. But music came from the heart and he had to let it out even if it was only to himself. Adrian walked right past the shadows, not noticing a thing as he was leafing through his sketches of possible costume designs that could be used in future productions. He stopped at the manager's door and knocked, receiving no answer. "They must be out..." He mumbled and checked the knob. Unlocked. It couldn't hurt to just go in and leave his work on the desk. He stepped into the office, the door left ajar as the young man headed inside.

The Phantom heard the door begin to creak open, swiftly he glanced around. There were very few places one could hide in this office. However, the darkness was his ally. He silently moved behind the door. Waiting for the other person to glance in. But if they were to enter the room Eric knew he would have to take matters into his own hands.

After a moment, he heard the footsteps of the man. The Phantom recognised the figure. Somewhat. The man was employed by the Opera house. Eric had seen him work late behind the scenes. He was most likely one of the resident tailors.

Eric silently closed the door and pounced upon the man. Wrapping his arm around his neck and pulling him back. Strangling him till he would pass out. He would not allow himself to be seen or caught.

Sherlock did not look up from his newspaper. "No." he said replied bluntly. It was a ridiculous case. Not in the sense that the crime was fantastical. However it was ridiculous to the man that they thought he would be interested in such a run of the mill crime. His talents would be better served on a more deserving case.

"Uh my soul, pretty obvious, I mean that's what you do isn't it you trade a humans biggest desire and their soul goes to hell when they die... and I hear you don't make deals with those who are already damned so that is my good news of the day" he says taking a sip of his beer.

"Why would I want your soul?" Lucifer scoffed. It was starting to become irritating, that each mortal he revealed his true nature to always presumed that he wanted their soul.

"I have souls flooding into Hell every day. And rarely enough demons to torture them" the Devil said furrowing his brow. In the end he had learned that it was more efficient to allow the mortals torture themselves. Reliving the worst moment of their lives. Have their own fears haunt them. For the rest of time.

"All I ask, is that you return the favour. At some point I might need help, and you should come to my aid" he said placing a hand on the man's shoulder.

Thomas forced a smile upon his lips. He was quite good at it by now, pretending that everything was fine. That he was no different than the other members of high society. But he was not the same as the others. He wished that he was. He truly did. But he was just a monster warped by fate and the choices of those around him. He had to do this to survive. At least, that's what he told himself every night when he tried to fall asleep.

"It is different. Especially from England" he said with a faint laugh. New York had a hustle and bustle about it that he had never seen before. Everyone seemed to be in a rush, and the division of ranks seem to be far less severe than back in his home land. The class system, as well as the titles of Lords and Ladies did not hold as much weight here. At best it was a curiosity. Deep down, he rather liked that. It gave him hope that he could crawl out of this grave his family had dug for him.

"But I am rather fond of that. Americans, in my experience seem to be far more amenable to new ideas. And not being dragged down by harmful traditions."

"Are you enjoying New York, Mr. Sharpe?" May asked with one of her perfectly rehearsed and practiced smiles that looked so convincingly guileless no one in New York society thought it otherwise.

There had been talk since the Sharpes' arrival, Dollar Princesses lined up and ready to be both buyer and merchandise. Though much admired by the New York set May Welland was neither on the auction block nor among the prospective buyers.

She privately prided herself on possessing a seemingly good-natured but unknowable serenity. It allowed her to view New York society from the same safe distance a siren might view the sailors who traveled along the water's surface. Descended as they were from Puritans and those overly proud of their European forefathers, New York high society lacked any curiosity about what lay beneath the Welland girl's still but deep waters.

And like the siren who was part animal May thought of herself as immensely pragmatic. Her cousin, whom her family always referred to as 'poor Ellen Olenska', had made a notoriously bad match with a Russian count a mistake May was determined not to repeat.

Yet like all young people, she was not always conscious of the waters in which she so gracefully moved. Had she truly been as mercenary as she saw herself she'd have refrained from asking her question. Yet she had asked it because the Englishman and Baronet quietly fascinated her. Not because of his title which as an American she quietly found ostentatious but because his suit was at least a decade old, his shoes worn, and whereas most gentlemen of Noble standing prided themselves on their lack of profession Thomas Sharpe struck her as having a strange restlessness. Thomas forced a smile upon his lips. He was quite good at it by now, pretending that everything was fine. That he was no different than the other members of high society. But he was not the same as the others. He wished that he was. He truly did. But he was just a monster warped by fate and the choices of those around him. He had to do this to survive. At least, that's what he told himself every night when he tried to fall asleep.

"It is different. Especially from England" he said with a faint laugh. New York had a hustle and bustle about it that he had never seen before. Everyone seemed to be in a rush, and the division of ranks seem to be far less severe than back in his home land. The class system, as well as the titles of Lords and Ladies did not hold as much weight here. At best it was a curiosity. Deep down, he rather liked that. It gave him hope that he could crawl out of this grave his family had dug for him.

"But I am rather fond of that. Americans, in my experience seem to be far more amenable to new ideas. And not being dragged down by harmful traditions."
