C: [Potential Spoiler Commentary] All Akito has ever wanted in her life was to be wanted. Akito has never had a chance to experience healthy relationships (platonic or romantic). She has poisoned all of her connections to the Zodiac members and the Sohma family, inflicting abuse similar to what she has gone through during her childhood. When someone finally holds out a selfless hand to embrace Akito - taking all of the bad as well as the potential for good - that hand is viscously ripped away as Tohru falls. Akito’s reaction and panic is very important to her character growth, because this is the first time she is upset on behalf of someone else. Later, she would feel sadness and regret for the Kureno, Yuki, Kyo, and the others… But in this moment, Akito is finally learning what it means to care for someone else. Her first true friend, Tohru.
