A Tail Unheard

Tunatively excited for SIREN, an indie mermaid RPG. The devs are quiet on social media - the Patreon's most active, I think - and the Discord's pay-to-access, but given the demo it might be legitimate...was concerned they bought assets from various marketplaces, like their mermaids from Turbosquid, then brushed my fluke on this:

Still cautious, though - now a team of five or six, a year after looking for a modeler/rigger/animator, mermaids are the focus, and they're still using premade models and animations? The mention of a "character rework" in a comment of one of their Youtube videos leaves a glimmer of hope, at least. Also, I'm usually against companions - they tend to be annoying sidekicks - but an octopus has such utility I'm intrigued.

Talk about things you never knew you wanted, jeez...that said, since finding this, I've three nickles. SIREN, Sirens, A Mermaid's Paradoxical Tale...

I mean, mostly? I'd expand it to make sure it included all the stuff mentioned/shown in the first demo (more locations, more gods, more Argonauts, original/context-specific moves):

Ah, yeah, the Artemis/Varonas stuff. A lot's scattered around internally - including a hope to salvage it as DLC - and an IGN preview mentioned FIFTEEN islands, which is slightly less insane when most of the Argonauts were going to be window dressing/non-combat. Cute that Perseus's mom was once on board, though.

Far as locations go, of the known ones I think Alexandria's the biggest lost. Apollo's one of four gods at the forefront here yet his followers don't share stories about him and he's absent save a couple things…well, few, given he bloomed Pelagia's flowers.

Yeah, be neat to see how the devs would characterize the other gods, given Ares'...rehabilitation and I haven't seen anything else focus on Hermes' role as spirit guide, never mind in all ways. Zeus as god of hospitality's already a tough sell given they kept the Kallisto...incident.

Next Door to Next Episode

Not sure what to make of that episode on Eiichi's part - the "I was just pursuing the ultimate song" logic made him look worse than if he intentionally mentally shiv'd the local ray of sunshine so hard the guy zombifies for an episode straight - but that may be a dodge.

Tangent, I'm imagining after recording Next Door Eiichi was like "That was so good. Thanks'" and Otoya's thousand timeline staring with all the light in his soul gone and shuffles out and Eiichi's just reeling from the feeling. Also, for episode 10 I would've preferred that instead of STARISH going to the orphanage, Eiichi, learning Otoya was missing, figured and anonymously hinted to them where Otoya would be (same souls, "I'm the only one who can understand your loss", 'sunflowers' in the lyrics, etc.), maybe send them part of the tragic past collection, I dunno. Maybe there's somethin' I'm not taking into account.

What's with depictions of Hermes and having a troubled relationship with a son? Rise of the Argonauts' Hermes and herms of atonement!Lykas (granted that was more misattribution), Percy Jackson's Hermes and Luke, Class of the Titans' Hermes and Autolykos…hahaha even their names. L[vowel]k[vowel].

Odyssey

Playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and...no Saria? It has built-in side quests! Lost city with the same name as another island! Sea caves, harsh cliffs, falcons! Princess and pirates! Centaurs!

Also, I only knew Kleon was gonna be a problem thanks to Disney's Hercules TV show. Was waiting for someone to mention the battle of Marathon so I could jump on a table and yell, "SURPRISE ATTACK!"

Just rolled through Elysium, and...wow. Hermes. What was kolossal disappointment. Thought he was secretly working with the rebels (him sending the player to find Insights guarded by Persephone's warriors, we're using his staff to free said warriors from Hypnos's sleep/Persephone's mind control, the paper key he made the rebels "stole" from him (FROM HIM) and tore into pieces and hid, Adonis saying he was a master manipulator and Hermes' Persephone championing was cover/fake for passing on coded messages/being an insider, so on), but no. And even if fawning over Persephone's like 90% of his character, the developers didn't think to throw in a gussy up like he did mythically for Herse? Getting quests to get things or what do you think or pretend you're her would've been fun and cute and novel. But no. So many missed opportunities.

That Reddit commentor was right. Something like, "The moral of Elysium is everyone sucks and you want to leave."

Language

Slapped some of the Blacktongues' sorcery jabber in a web search on a whim and it's...legit Greek? Example, "kalon kagathon" seems to mean "beautiful and good" and an encapsulation of conduct.

I love Rise of the Argonauts but I really wish they'd have looked at map when making the different "islands" in the game.

Iolcus? Not an island! Delphi? Definitely not an island! Mycenae? Also not an island!

Kythera? That one is an island, but one famously sacred to Aphrodite, not Athena as in the game.

Regarding Delphi, pretty sure the developers combine it and Delos for recognizibility's sake, same reason they went with Hercules instead of Herakles. Saria (and Nisyros, for that matter) speak for themselves...not sure why they picked what names they did given the wealth to choose from, but making everything an island would be less technically straining, given the devs had trouble with memory budgets. Poor Colchis, though. Torn off Georgia and thrown into Hell.
