Harry and Taylor have been secretly hanging out for SEVERAL months now without the public knowing. Theyāve been together at a mutual friends place in Malibu on several occasions. Most of their friends know about their frequent hangouts. And yes, theyāve even been together this week.Ā
Which leads me to address Harryās relationship that is currently making headlines. HEREāS WHAT IāVE BEEN TOLD: Harry and her are friends. Nothing more. According to a friend of mine, there will never be anything serious between the two of them. Youāll hear about their relationshipĀ a little while longer but it will quickly fizzle out.Ā
PSA: Iām not saying that Harry and Taylor will get back together. Iām not accusing anyone of anything. However, I just thought I would pass along what Iāve been told.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āāāāāāāāāāāāāā
Taylor has a few surprises up her sleeve for the Grammyās. I think you all will really like her performance if all goes to plan. Theyāre still trying to get some stuff figured out and arranged but either way⦠IT WILL BE AWESOME. Also, there are a few surprises lined up for several of the shows at the O2 in London next month. It was a bummer Taylor didnāt win the Golden Globe but 2014 is looking to be another banner year for Taylor. T-minus 9 months until the 5th album and about 7 months until you hear BRAND NEW music. So exciting!
Have a good one.
āI heard youāve been out and about with some other girlā - A āStyleā timeline
Ah, Style. #justice4style
The best song on 1989, also the song that Taylor did dirty the most by refusing to promote it, most likely because of the subject matter (ex-bf Harry Styles).
Itās also the most mysterious song on the album, in which the circumstances in the song is still a hotly debated topic in the fandom: When exactly did the events in song happen?
And: Who is the āother girlā in the song lyrics about?
The fandom is split into two factions ā the first one believes that the song happened in late Sept-Oct 2012 when Harry and Taylor got back together for the first time, and that the āother girlā is Emily Ostilly, whom Harry was caught kissing in Australia in April 2012.
Now, the second faction believes that Style happened in Feb 2014, a year after Harry and Taylor broke up, and the 'other girlā is Kendall Jenner, who Harry was casually seeing throughout Dec 2013 - Feb 2014.
Now, Iām here to put down my case on why I believe that āStyleā is very definitely the SECOND theory, and that Harry and Taylor were meeting/hooking up in secret during Hendall 1.0. Oh dear.

The Haylor Timeline
Part Four
āSomething happens when everybody finds out..ā
November 1, 2012 ā Taylor attends the CMAs in Nashville then remains unseen until the 6th.
November 3, 2012 ā Harry is in Paris for work, still wearing his airplane necklace on Dancing with the Stars, then disappears for nearly three days.
November 6, 2012 ā They show back up in London separately after hiding out for a few days. Harry is seen at the airport, leaving for LA. Meanwhile, Taylor performs at a tree lighting ceremony.
November 7, 2012 ā Taylor steps out in London wearing Harryās airplane necklace for the first time. That night, she goes on the Chatty Man show and speaks on having relationships in the spotlight:
Interviewer: āHow hard is it to keep your private life private? Because there are paps everywhere.ā
Taylor: āI think it all depends on who youāre with, if they have a serious issue with it then I guess you like.. hide or whatever. But I donāt really like that cause it makes me feel like Iām running from the law or something. I donāt wanna feel like Iām a fugitive, like, āOh my goddd weāre having a relationship! Better put on a mask and stuff!āā ā¦. āBut with the privacy thing, Iād just rather live my life and I feel like if you can be in a relationship and have it seem normal, that would be good.ā
So, already we see they have completely opposite views. Harry wants to keep his relationship out of the spotlight while Taylor wants to go out like a normal couple. Who do you think gets what they want?
November 8, 2012 ā Taylor wears the necklace for the second day in a row then stops wearing it for a while.
During an interview, a fan asks Niall what his go-to car/shower song is, he answers āWe are never getting back togetherā
The interviewer then asks Louis a music question and adds āJust donāt say Taylor Swift cause thatās Niallāsā
Louis mumbles āAnd Harryāsāā before answering the question x
November 9, 2012 ā Harry shows off his new bird tattoos on the Ellen show. He has covered up the Love banner tattoo and his airplane necklace is gone.
While in Paris, an interviewer asks Taylor what song off her new album fits her mood today and she says her favorite song today is Treacherous because āLove can be really dangerous but itās worth it.ā x
November 14, 2012 ā One Direction leave New York City for London while Harry meets up with Taylor in LA instead. She introduces him to her past collaborators, producer Jacknife Lee and Snow Patrolās Gary Lightbody. The three of them write āSomething Greatā for One Directionās next album.
The song is about someone who is longing for a past love, saying they could be something great when the narrator one day tells the muse how he feels and finally gets it right. This may have been a song idea Harry came up with before getting back together with Taylor.
November 15, 2012 ā Gary Lightbody tweets about writing a song with Harry the day before and they follow each other on twitter. x
Harry accompanies Taylor (and her mom) to rehearsals for her X Factor performance and an E! News article āāhot off the pressā ā reports this right as it happened. Convenient. (x) This is when everyone finally catches on and One Direction fans can no longer ignore it. But the general consensus on stan twitter is as youād expect. āOur poor baby Harry is going to get hurt and written about by the crazy serial dater, Taylor Swift!!!!ā
Although I truly believe their relationship was real, this soft launch is obviously planned and contrived with the help of Harryās management. First, the official X Factor USA twitter account is the first to āoutā Haylor with this weird tweet about them in the lunch line together (cheeseburgers)
Then, 30 minutes later, an X Factor All Access account tweets that they saw Harry throw Taylor over his shoulder and carry her off, as mentioned in the E! News article. This account is ran by a girl who is clearly paid to follow the contestants around during rehearsals, get interviews and backstage content, hype up the live shows etc.
I just found it odd that these X Factor employees have taken it upon themselves to reveal this secret relationship to the world. Itās no coincidence that they all worked for Simon Cowell, who owns the X Factor franchise and One Directionās label.
November 16, 2012 ā Harry flies back to London last minute and joins One Direction for a scheduled work event.
During a radio interview, Mario Lopez (X Factor presenter) gives us more Haylor tea
"Taylor Swift was the special guest performer, and a little inside scoop for you: During rehearsals, Harry from One Direction came and slapped me on the back and said, 'Hey, Mario, how ya doing?' And I said, 'What are you doing here?' And he sort of [pointed] toward Taylor." He also revealed they walked away holding hands.
also apart of the staged soft launch
November 18, 2012 ā The Sun also reports on the X Factor story with more information from inside sources, now deleted. A pal said: āShe thought Harry was hot and got Justin to introduce them. She fell for him straight away. They secretly had a bit of a thing.
They were texting and talking a lot and met up a few times. But it ended when Harry was spotted with another girl in New Zealand.
Taylor was really embarrassed by what happened and was nervous about giving him another go. But this time they have spent more time getting to know each other.
Taylor is very full-on in relationships and falls for people quickly. Harry is being careful because he doesnāt want to hurt her again. But heās made it clear he likes her a lot. They have been quietly seeing each other again for a little while now.ā
Taylor spends the next 3 days filming the āI Knew You Were Troubleā music video in LA.
If youāre anything like me, you see this music video as a fictional or at least dramatic portrayal of a broader concept, a life lesson learned from several different experiences. The song and video represent all the times Taylor recognized red flags yet chose to pursue the relationship anyway. In that sense, the narrative draws from multiple muses rather than a single person.
āI donāt think I wouldāve written this type of narrative a couple years ago because I hadnāt realized yet that getting my heart broken isnāt only one personās fault. I guess thatās where I am now in my life. If I realized early on that this is a huge risk factor and I went for it anyway, itās my fault too.ā - Taylor, IKYWT behind the scenes
So when people ask, āDo you honestly believe this song is about Harry?ā my answer is yes, partly. I also think elements of it point to John Mayer, and perhaps even Martin Johnson, among others from her past. I stand by the theory that while she may have been thinking of John when she came up with the chorus in January, the inspiration when finishing it in June was clearly now Harry. Obviously by the time the song is released, they are back together. So she keeps it vague and doesnāt start leaving bread crumbs to this discovery until after their break up. Behind the scenes, Taylor shared that the concept for this video had been in development for months, possibly even before she reconciled with Harry.
She explained further in the interview:
āThe character Reeve is playing isnāt stereotypical because heās not all bad. Heās sweet and kind and sensitive and everything this girl wants⦠sometimes.ā
So here are some possible references to Harry that I noticed:
1. We first get a montage of the couple in the beginning stages and I noticed some parallels to to The Very First Night.
2. Taylorās love interest wears a gold pendent with a charm of some kind, similar to the gold pendent and cross charm Harry was wearing during their time together in the spring. Here, the airplane necklace (itās a key in the music video) is missing because heās given it to her. He actually gave her his necklace 10 days before shooting the music video.
3. Taylor catches her love interest kissing another woman and then watches him continue to go through women. I believe this is a metaphor for Harryās womanizing behavior. When he got caught kissing another girl in New Zealand then continued to be seen going out with several different woman over the summer. Taylor had to see it all.
4. I previously kept mentioning this Love banner tattoo for a reason. While we donāt know the exact day, he would have gotten it sometime in October. The placement on his chest is almost identical to the music video, this is a clear reference to Harry ā and Taylor seems to be saying she was with him when he got it. That is completely plausible considering they secretly spent a total of four days together in London that month.
At the end of the Trouble music video, Taylor says in a voice over āMaybe you donāt know who you are, ātil you lose who you are.ā
Three years later, she ends the āOut of the Woodsā music video with the quote, āShe lost him but found herself and somehow that was everything.ā
November 26, 2012 ā Taylor says in an Australian interview "I think the one thing about love is that you don't know anything. It always comes back and surprises you so I don't have any general theories on love at the moment because they always get proven wrong."
Taylorās morals and boundaries were clearly evolving during this era of her life. Up until this point, anything resembling infidelity was a firm line that couldnāt be crossed. But during this relationship, things became less black-and-white. She got back together with Harry after he was unfaithful, though not technically cheating. She was no saint either when she broke up with Conor two weeks after being seen with Harry. Songs like āThe Very First Nightā and āThis Loveā suggest some kind of emotional overlap.
November 29, 2012 ā Taylor attends the ARIA awards in Australia. The Temper Trap later revealed in 2015 that this was the event where Taylor came up to them with a piece of paper and a request: āItās my boyfriend's birthday soon. I wanna give him a present - here's a piece of paper, can you please write down the lyrics to Sweet Disposition and sign it? I wanna give it to him."
This shows that Taylor had every intention of Harry still being her boyfriend on his birthday in February. I think this relationship was pretty serious for her. Iām not sure how seriously Harry took it though.
December 2, 2012 ā Haylor make their debut as a couple, taking a stroll through Central Park (along with Harryās hairstylist and her family).
They are spotted by fans having dinner with Harryās parents that night.
December 3, 2012 ā Taylorās SUV is seen leaving Harryās hotel the next day. She arrives at her own, minutes later. x x
One Direction perform a sold out show at Madison Square Garden, Taylor was said to have entered through the back of the venue with the boys while the other 1D girlfriends used the main entrance.
Taylor is Harryās plus one to the after party at the Hudson Hotel. They spend the night dancing and singing karaoke with friends. Harry is clearly hammered. The footage and pictures from this night have always made me cringe because it just kinda seems like Taylor is trying her best to fit in with him and his friends at his party and heās just ignoring her. We see her touching him, trying to talk to him, dancing against him and he keeps his back to her most of the time. Hereās some videos: X X X X
Even in the photo of them singing together, it looks like he is awkwardly leaning away.
Harryās mom, Anne tweets about their duet.
Now I know we canāt judge a few seconds from a party that lasted for hours but when I see these pictures I get flashes of lyrics from 1989.. āyou give me everything and nothingā and āthe more I gave, youād want me lessā to name a couple.
December 4, 2012 ā They leave the party together and arrive back to Taylorās hotel at 4am.
Later in the day, Harry leaves Taylorās hotel minutes before she does and comes back that night with a full duffel bag.
December 5, 2012 ā Harry leaves Taylorās hotel in the morning after another night together. He spends the day filming a music video for One Direction.
December 6, 2012 ā Taylor is spotted leaving Harryās hotel in the early morning. x
Taylor (wearing the airplane necklace again) attends the interactive theater show Sleep No More than dinner at the Crosby Street Hotel for Emma Stoneās birthday. Harry shows up late to the hotel after taping his David Letterman talk show appearance. He calls out a pap that followed him to the hotel for being a dangerous driver. This lends to Taylorās story that they really were being āhuntedā by paparazzi during this time. Not everything was staged and set up beforehand.
At 10:30pm, a woman tweets about being in the same bar as Taylor and Harry. x
She is contacted by someone from People magazine and gives a quote about what she saw. (article now deleted) x
"Taylor and Harry were being very smoochie," a source at the party told PEOPLE. "They definitely looked like a couple."
According to the source, Swift and Styles held hands and he seemed "really protective of her" and kept his arm around her during the party. They shared plenty of kisses, too, and didn't seem to mind if anyone saw. Says the source: "They're not trying to hide it. The bar was packed."
So I decided to reach out politely for more information and she kindly responded. She confirmed this bar was in the Crosby Street Hotel. Her long table was right next to theirs and they stayed for hours. She says Harry and Taylor seemed very into each other and their PDA wasnāt over the top, but appropriate for the setting and their age. I even asked about Dianna and Taylorās vibe for the Swiftgrons. She says there was nothing out of the ordinary.
Dianna, Taylor and Harry play Rock, Paper, Scissors in the lobby while waiting for a car. The Gaylor explanation of this video is Dianna shoved Harry for getting too close to her girl. (First of all, calling this a shove or push is crazy). But allow me to offer another perspective because to me, this whole video seems to be lighthearted, playful and an obvious bit.
1. Harry and Dianna play first. His hand is in a fist to resemble rock. He wins and turns to Taylor for the next round.
2. We see Harry smirking as he loses to Taylor. His hand is flat like paper, she pretends to cut his hand with her scissor fingers.
3. Then his hands go up to her face or neck area. You can see her hair and the back of her head as she leans away from him to get away from whatever heās doing.
4. He pretends to take something of Taylorās and stuffs it in his jacket pocket as he walks away. But he immediately stops and walks back to the group because itās all a bit. I can only assume he was pretending to be a sore loser and taking his necklace from her neck as retaliation for getting beat - maybe?
5. Dianna steps in front of Taylor to block out Harry. You can see a split second where Taylor is actually the first to make the āshooingā motion with her hand and Dianna immediately copies her and shoos Harry away.
They all walk out together and Dianna (and another blonde friend from the party that never gets mentioned in Swiftgron timelines) leave in the same car with Haylor. x
December 7, 2012 ā Harry is seen leaving Taylorās hotel on their last morning in NYC. They both attend and perform at the Z100 Jingle Ball where we get a bunch of Haylor content. First, they separately walk the red carpet where Taylor is asked about Harry but she wonāt budge. (Neither does Ed Sheeran) Meanwhile, Harry is asked what he should get Taylor for her birthday and Liam jokingly answers for him, āHarry.ā He coyly avoids answering the dating question by saying āI just bumped into her at the zoo and I donāt know.. things got crazy.ā while Liam whistles in the background. x
One Direction are the first to perform at the festival and Taylor can be seen watching from the side of the stage. Halfway through their set, Taylor leaves to get ready for her own and Harry keeps looking over after he notices sheās gone.
Harry returns the favor by watching Taylorās set. When she finishes, he walks up to her backstage and greets her with a hug.
Taylor can be seen dancing by the side of the stage with Harry while waiting to perform with B.O.B x
Taylor kisses Harry on the cheek before going onstage and Harry can be seen happily jumping/dancing around during her performance. x
A concert goer posts on tumblr about what they saw between Harry and Taylor: x
Harry follows Taylor as she leaves her dressing room and stops for fans. They take a red eye flight to London via Taylorās private jet.
December 8, 2012 ā Taylor is spotted backstage, leaving with Harry after his Capital FM Jingle Ball performance in London. x x x x
Later that night, Harryās mom posts a picture of herself, Gemma and Taylorās socks.
December 9, 2012 ā Taylor accompanies Harry to his X Factor UK performance. x
December 11, 2012 ā Anne posts an instagram photo of her Christmas baking which most likely involved Taylor. Later in the evening, Taylor and Harry have dinner with his sister Gemma and her boyfriend. The pub manager gives a statement about her conversation with Taylor.
A separate restaurant goer describes the PDA she saw between Harry and Taylor. Also, both sources go into detail about the meals the couple ordered and they match up which gives their stories more credibility to me.
āHarry and Taylor were putting spoons on their noses and fooling around with each other and taking photos of each other. After that, they were stood talking and Harry kept putting his hand on Taylorās bum. Taylor had her arms around him a lot and they were really close all night. They seemed like they got along really well and they got on with Harryās sister and did seem like a normal couple. They were sat together opposite Harryās sister and you could see Harryās hand on Taylorās lap the whole evening."
They make a Tesco stop in Cheshire on the way back to his motherās home. x
Nick Grimshaw is asked about Haylor while at an event and gives his stamp of approval x
āHarry really likes Taylor, heās fallen for her in a big way. At first I wasnāt sure if the relationship was a real one but I talk to him a lot and it seems to be that sheās the one ā for now, anyway. American artists are usually really, really boring and reserved but Taylor is fun. Sheās always up for a laugh and is really good company. Harry likes people who make him laugh. I talk to Harry a lot on the phone while heās away touring and he talks about her a lot. He is very happy with her. I like her a lot too, she came on my show recently and we had a really fun time.ā
December 12, 2012 ā They spend the day Christmas shopping and feeding the birds in The Lake District. Taylor is carrying a new Chanel bag that is allegedly an early birthday gift from Harry. A local jeweler describes her encounter with the couple.
Another store owner shares his own experience:
Owner Andy Poole described Taylor as ānice and charmingā and revealed, āThey were dancing around to the seasonal music being played. Harry was being the most boisterous.ā
I find it interesting how Harry is so stiff and awkward when he knows theyāre being filmed but in private he is being described as the more playful and rowdy one.
They end their day back in Cheshire, grabbing takeout from a Chinese restaurant next door to Harryās childhood home ā his favorite growing up.
December 13, 2012 ā On the morning of Taylorās 23rd birthday, Harry picks up a custom order of 23 cupcakes from a local bakery. Later in the afternoon, Harry allegedly took Taylor to a golf club he frequents (not pictured). Afterwards, they stop for gas where they notice they are being followed by a pap on a motorbike. They grab dinner at a nearby pub before going home. x
December 14, 2012 ā Harry drops Taylor off at the airport and goes to a local UNI party that night.
December 15-17, 2012 ā While in Germany for Red promo, Taylor says she had the ābest birthday since I was about six years old.ā
December 18, 2012 ā Haylor reunite in LA and Taylor accompanies Harry to the Shamrock Parlor while he gets a new ship tattoo on his arm.. which matches the fake tattoo Reeve Carney wore on his arm one month earlier, for the IKYWT music video. Yeah, I have no explanation for this one. Either Taylor knew Harry wanted this tattoo and used the inspiration for her music video or Harry liked the tattoo after seeing the music video and wanted one for himself.
December 19, 2012 ā Taylor is spotted leaving her LA home around noon with Harry and her mom, Andrea. Taylor and Andrea stop by Ralphās grocery store. x
Harry goes to music rehearsals then attends a Haim concert at the Troubadour with a friend. He meets the band and tweets about it, then leaves just before midnight. Taylor is notably absent. We know she is not in attendance because not only is she never seen again that day, but when she and Haim begin interacting in 2014, itās clear they had not met prior.
December 20, 2012 ā One Direction perform at the X Factor US finale. Taylor is not seen in attendance this time but Harry gets asked about her on the red carpet twice, followed by teasing from the other boys. x x
December 21, 2012 ā Haylor go on a ski trip in Utah with Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, rumored to be a surprise Christmas gift for Harry from Taylor. They take pictures with fans while having dinner that night. An onlooker claims they look āhappy and in love.ā
December 22, 2012 ā Around 7pm local time, a girl tweets about seeing Harry around the resort several times that day, including holding hands with Taylor.
December 23, 2012 ā Around noon local time, Harry tweets a hint at his chin injury after getting into a snowmobile accident with Taylor. x
December 24, 2012 ā Harry arrives back in London hiding his injury, then goes to a Christmas party with a bandage on.
December 25-27, 2012 ā Taylor and Harry are spotted in their own hometowns spending Christmas with their respective families.
December 28, 2012 ā Harry is seen at a London airport trying to get to the states, but he forgets his passport and has to take a later flight. He was allegedly suppose to be flying to Boston. There could be a couple reasons for this, if true. He could have been trying to avoid a NYC airport this close to New Years or he and Taylor were hiding out in her Cape Cod home for a few days. Neither of them are seen until NYE so itās possible.
December 31, 2012 ā Harry attends a Coldplay concert but shows up in time for Taylorās Rockinā New Yearās Eve performance and midnight kiss in Times Square. (multiple angles of the kiss x x x x)
December 2012: Sometime this month, Harry co-writes and records a demo of āDonāt Let Me Goā with Sam McCarthy but it is never officially released. However Sam posts the demo onto the internet in June 2013 x
It seems to describe his current feelings on his relationship with Taylor with lyrics like:
āNow you were standing there right in front of me
I hold on it's getting harder to breathe
All of a sudden these lights are blinding me
I never noticed how bright they would beā
We are at the beginning of the end of Haylor but before we get to that, I want to do a quick overview of this month. I know it seemed like they were throwing themselves in our faces, especially to the people who think they were PR. But actually, they made an effort to stay private most of the time. I hope my timeline shows that the majority of their spotted outings were normal fans seeing them in public and asking for photos.
Hereās a list to put it into perspective
Days total in December: 31
Days spent together: 25 (6 days apart for work and christmas)
Days photographed by fans: 17 (7 days together unseen)
Days paparazziād: 6 (Central Park, Emma Stoneās birthday, Taylorās birthday, Airport drop off, Tattoo parlor, Taylorās house in LA)

āHis voice is a familiar sound, but nothing lasts forever..ā
**Disclaimer: I believe Taylorās own words and music when she suggests there was a secret romantic involvement with Harry during 2013 (we call it a situationship now). With that in mind, this section is about narrowing down that timeline with the help of their locations, public statements, and the songs they were writing. It is still only an educated guess and shouldnāt be taken as fact. Itās also worth noting every time Taylor mentions being with Harry in her music, itās in the middle of the night, which makes it even harder to figure them out- but I guess that was their intention.
January 1, 2013 ā Harry and Taylor, along with her family, attend a party at a nearby hotel before returning to their own around 3:30 a.m. (Harry lended her his coat) They check out later that morning and leave with her mom.
January 3, 2013 ā Taylor and Harry are spotted grabbing dinner in the British Virgin Islands.
January 4, 2013 ā Haylor breakup after a huge blowup argument. Taylor takes the first flight back home alone and Harry visits billionaire Richard Bransonās private island for the day to āblow off some steamā x
Later in a 1989 secret session, Taylor says āI was on a boat once and I came up with the line āso its going to be forever, or its going to go down in flamesā and I didnāt use it for about a year until I was writing Blank Space and I was like āOH!ā
January 5, 2013 ā Harry arrives back to the Virgin Gorda island in the early morning just as the hot tub pictures are spreading onto the internet. Meanwhile Taylor is back home and tweets something sinister..this is the first time Taylor signals to us that IKYWT is about Harry.
The Sun and E! News report that Harry told Taylor he loved her back in NYC and Scott Swift warned them to slow down. If this is even true, could this be a reference to Wonderland lyric āDidnāt they tell us donāt rush into things?ā
January 7, 2013 ā Haylor breakup is confirmed by People magazine and Page Six as Harry arrives back home in London.
January 9, 2013 ā Taylor attends the Peopleās Choice Awards, first public outing since the breakup.
January 10, 2013 ā Taylor trolls 1D fans with a simple tweet āBack in the studio..Uh oh.ā She reveals via Tumblr years later that this is the day she wrote āAll You Had To Do Was Stayā
The song tells us that although Harry was the one who wanted to break up, he is now calling her and trying to get back together.
January 12, 2013 ā Taylor attends the Golden Globes but leaves midway through the show, after the hosts jokingly warned her to āstay away from Michael J. Foxās sonā. Taylor was in the bathroom at the time and had no idea the audience was laughing at her expense. She went on to call the hosts āmean girlsā and famously added that āthereās a special place in hell for women who donāt help other women.ā In hindsight itās clear that this overreaction was her being heartbroken and lashing out. The online slut shaming from Harry stans ā and now the general public āhad gotten so loud that this poorly timed but harmless joke became her tipping point.
January 15, 2013 ā Taylor is āSomewhere in LA..ā, writes āHow You Get The Girlā and later describes it as such: āThe song āHow You Get The Girlā is a song that I wrote about how you get the girl back if you ruined the relationship somehow and she wonāt talk to you anymore. Like, if you broke up with her and left her on her own for six months and then you realize you miss her. All the steps you have to do to edge your way back into her life, because sheās probably pretty mad at you. So itās kind of a tutorial. If you follow the directions in the song, chances are things will work out. Or you may get a restraining order.ā
The song is loosely based on what happened with Harry the first time around, especially with the six month timeline from April to October when they got back together and she wrote āThis love came back to meā
In the bridge she directly addresses the muse and sings āRemind me how it used to be, pictures in frames of kisses on cheeksā (another lyric parallel to This Loveās āyour kiss, my cheek, I watched you leaveā)
Is she telling him to do it again because it worked the first time? Or is this just a song idea from a couple months ago that sheās finally writing out?
January 19, 2013 ā Rumors start circulating on twitter that Harry and Niall have bought homes in LA. Apparently this came from an article but it has since been deleted. On the 20th, it is officially reported that Niall did purchase a home next to the Kardashians. So while Harry most likely was house hunting, he did not end up buying a home this time.
January 24, 2013 ā Harry is seen driving around Beverly Hills driving a new Ferrari.
January 26, 2013 ā Taylor and Harry see each other for the first time since the break up at the NRJ Music Awards in France.
January 30, 2013 ā Taylor is back in Nashville preparing to start Red tour rehearsals.
February 1, 2013 ā Harry spends his 19th birthday in London, Nick Grimshaw surprises him with a stripper
February 2013 ā First week of the month, Taylor is interviewed by Vanity Fair.
February 10, 2013 ā Taylor performs āWe Are Never Ever Getting Back Togetherā at the Grammys and mocks Harry
āSo he calls me up and heās like, [british accent] āI still love youuu.ā and Iām like āIām sorry, Iām busy opening up the Grammys!āā
Again, it cuts deeper knowing he really was calling her up for another chance
February 11, 2013 ā Taylor may have dressed up like a hipster and made fun of her ex while filming the 22 music video
February 17, 2013 ā Harry is asked how he is doing after the breakup and the Grammys incident during a radio interview. He keeps his composure but says āIām okay. She's a great performer⦠She's done it for a long time. She knows what she's doing on stage. It was just another good Taylor Swift performance. It was good."
February 20, 2013 ā Taylor angrily performs I Knew You Were Trouble at the BRITs infront of Harry and says in a post interview "Well, it's not hard to access that emotion when the person the song is directed at is standing by the side of the stage watching."
In return, Harry keeps it civil and claps for her when she walks onstage to present an award.
February 21, 2013 ā Taylor spends the BRITs after-party on a pub date with singer Tom Odell, who goes on to write Country Star about this night and notes that she is heartbroken.
February 22, 2013 ā Taylor says she changed her phone number last week during a radio interview.
February 23, 2013 ā One Directionās international tour kicks off in London and Harry remains in the UK for the next month as far as we know
February 24, 2013 ā Taylor back in Nashville for Red tour rehearsals
March 4, 2013 ā Taylorās Vanity Fair issue drops; The writer talks more about the Harry Styles story here x
Harryās mom and sister unfollow Taylor on twitter around this time.
Here are the best quotes I think offer insight into her mindset:
āI can laugh at myself [referring to dating life jokes] but what it ended up adding to was this whole kind of everyone jumping on the bandwagon of Taylor dates too much - which, you know, if you want some big revelation, since 2010 I have dated exactly two people."
"Everybody in these tabloidy gossipy blogs, they think they have you pegged, like āTaylor's boy-crazy' And it's why I have to avoid the tabloid part of our culture, because they turn you into a fictional character.ā
"I'm dealing with a little bit of a chaotic media circus right now, but that'll die down in a few weeks when people realize there's nothing left to talk about.ā
Harry Styles, who's only 19, has been seen around with plenty of girls. But nobody calls them the kinds of names that get thrown at Swift. "They're 'playboys,'" Swift says wryly. "They're "having fun.""
Then we get all the Haylor lore from a close friend of Taylorās:
She won't go into personal details about any of her relationships (it's one of her rules) but she does authorize someone who knows her well to discuss them with me. Swift's friend said that the Styles situation is completely misrepresented in the media. This young woman claimed that Styles "chased" Swift for a year: "He wore her down." And then, last spring, she said, there was a weekend "where they got really close, and he was all, like, 'You're amazing I want to be with you. I want to do this.'" Soon after that, when Styles was on tour in Australia with One Direction, he allegedly texted Swift to alert her to a picture of himself on the Internet "kissing a friend goodbye," but said, "It's no big deal." When Swift searched online for the picture, however, she found that they were "making out like with their hands all up in each other's hair." [The wording of this part has caused some confusion. The writer makes a blanket statement about how the public has the story all wrong because despite the tabloids insisting Taylor was the obsessive, pushy one, her friend claims itās the other way around and āhe chased her for a yearā. It is then followed up with a full quote to expand on that claim where the friend retells the entire affair from spring 2012 to now, including the āchasingā period in between. Harry did not chase Taylor in 2011, a whole year before the first fling.]
A rep for Styles, Benny Taranti at Columbia Records, called all of Swift's friend's claims "undeniably false." [The claim that Harry and Emma were āmaking out with hands in each otherās hairā can be proven false by the pictures themselves.]
Swift ended the relationship, continued her friend, after which Styles allegedly pursued her for the better part of a year, professing his devotion and promising never to stray again. "So then they got back together, but the whole time she says she feels like he's looking at every girl and thinking about hooking up with every girl." And then, when they were in London sometime in the last few months, the boy-band balladeer allegedly "disappears one night and after that it was like he just didn't want to keep going." [I believe this is referring to December 14th. After a week in London together, Harry drops Taylor off at the airport and spends the night at a local frat party.] Now, said the friend, he is allegedly texting Swift "again nonstop, like 'Where are you? Call me. Are you back?'ā
March 6, 2013 ā Taylor is seen going to a studio in LA. (it would have to be Wonderland, Wildest Dreams or an unreleased song; my guess is Wonderland)
March 13, 2013 ā Taylorās opening night of the Red tour in Nebraska, The surprise song is āI Almost Doā which is about fighting the urge to reach out to an ex āI bet you think I either moved on or hate you cause each time you reach out thereās no replyā (Taylor soon wrote about this same sentiment again in IWYW āyou say āitās in the pastā, you drive straight ahead, thinking that I hate you now cause you still donāt know what I never saidā)
March 14, 2013 ā Red tour Nebraska night 2, The surprise song is āWhite Horseā
āThere you are on your knees; begging for forgiveness, begging for meā
March 17, 2013 ā Harry tweets that heās listening to a song called Trouble but that Burn is the one we need to hear.. so letās look at the lyrics
March 18, 2013 ā Red tour, Missouri night 1 surpise song is āShouldāve Said Noā
āYou shouldnāt be begging for forgiveness at my feetā
March 19, 2013 ā Red tour night 2 of St. Louis, Missouri.
Four shows into the tour, Taylor decides she wants to bring back a tradition from the last tour. She chooses her arm lyrics from Holy Ground, which is about deciding to look back on a past relationship fondly instead of holding a grudge. Interesting..
āSometimes I wonder how you think about it now and I see your face in every crowd..ā
March 22, 2013 ā Red tour North Carolina, Taylor chooses Tim McGraw as the surprise song.. which is another reminiscent song about a past relationship.
āWhen you think happiness, I hope you think that little black dress.ā
March 23, 2013 ā Red Tour, South Carolina surprise song is āForever and Alwaysā
āI was there when you said, "Forever and always".. You didn't mean it babyā
March 24, 2013 ā Harry lands in LA for his week-long break from tour
March 25, 2013 ā Harry tweets James Taylor lyrics, the full chorus is āIāve seen fire and Iāve seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend. But I always thought that I'd see you again..ā
Now let me remind you-
Taylor had just recently released a song about owning several James Taylor records. He is literally her namesake. She is famously a big fan of James and this song which she sang with him six months earlier. Harry knew exactly what he was doing here.
My theory is, Harry may have been driving past or near her neighborhood (it gets reported in April that Harry has been looking for a home in LA + he ended up buying a home in Beverly Hills near Taylorās street in 2014) and maybe it put him in his feelings, hence the āFire and Rainā tweet at 1 am.. you see where iām going with this
March 26, 2013 ā Harry is spotted driving in LA
March 27, 2013 ā Red Tour Newark, NJ
After skipping arm lyrics the past couple shows, she brings it back for the last time. Her mood ring for this night is Holy Ground, yet again!
āA first glance feeling on New York time, back when you fit in my poems like a perfect rhyme..ā
So, Taylor spontaneously brought back arm lyrics for only a couple shows to get the same message across from the same song.. and if you recall where Taylor spent that first night with Harry, it matches the first secret message on the 1989 album āOur story begins in New Yorkā.
March 28, 2013 ā Red Tour Newark n2 surprise song is āThe Story of Usā
āThis is looking like a contest of who can act like they care less but I liked it better when you were on my side. The battle's in your hands now but I would lay my armor down if you'd say you'd rather love than fight..ā
Enough said.
March 29, 2013 ā Harry leaves LA and goes back to London that night to resume tour.
Red Tour Newark n3 surprise song āYouāre Not Sorryā Taylor makes an intro speech:
āI truly believe that when dealing with anybody you meet, you should start by trusting them, you know? Like any new friends you meet, any new person you meet, I think you should truly believe the best in them. And um, the first time that they tell you theyāre sorry, I think you should believe them. And then, if they keep doing the same exact thing that they say theyāre sorry for, that means one thing guysā¦.is that theyāre not sorry.ā
March 30, 2013 ā Taylor tweets MORE Holy Ground lyrics. This is where her brief obsession with this song ends but you gotta wonder what this was all about.
āTonight Iām gonna dance for all that weāve been through, but I donāt wanna dance if Iām not dancing with you..ā
March 30-April 2, 2013 ā Taylor disappears, and Harry is unseen outside of One Directionās nightly concertsāunusual for him. (I am only noting this as a potential meetup that inspired I Wish You Would. Harry had a show in London every night but Taylor, by chance, had several days off. Harry was usually seen out every day but suddenly MIA here. The timing adds up, but you would have to buy that Taylor was so love struck and reckless that she would fly to London at Harryās request after they started talking again. Idk if I buy it myself)
April 3, 2013 ā Taylor is spotted grocery shopping in LA; Harry reappears in London at an art gallery opening then a private club party until 3am.
April 5-7, 2013 ā Taylor is in Vegas for the ACMs
April 7, 2013 ā Harryās old school friend gives an interview about him and briefly mentions that he has wanted Taylor since 2009 after seeing one of her music videos. x
April 8, 2013 ā Louis blurts out āTaylor Swiftā into the mic after Harry sings the line āIām in love with you..ā during Little Things x
Kinda weird for Louis to tease Harry about loving Taylor on a random day 3 months into the breakup especially after how shady Taylor had been. Unless they were back in contact by now..
April 10, 2013 ā After a 2 week break from tour, Taylor comes back with āToday was a Fairytaleā for the surprise song
The surprise songs go from primarily sad songs to 99% happy love songs from here until the summer
(most of these were fan requests so donāt put too much importance on them for answers. I think the point is sheās consistently picking the happy song requests)
April 12, 2013 ā Red tour Orlando N2 surprise song is āOur Songā
āOur song is the slamming screen door, sneaking out late, tapping on your window..ā
April 13, 2013 ā Harry tweets about the song Dumb by Tich.. the lyrics are a little on the nose
April 13-19, 2013 ā Harry touring in England
April 20, 2013 ā Red tour Tampa surprise song is āI almost doā and Taylor says āeverybodyās got like one, maybe two, I don't know how many you have, but at least one person in your life that doesnāt belong in your life anymore because maybe they hurt you or maybe itās just over but you kind of want to call them sometimes. And you think better of it. But, you almost do it.ā
April 23, 2013 ā Taylor is seen in Nashville; Harry arrives in LA from London. (Taylor couldāve potentially taken her jet to LA for a day or two)
April 24, 2013 ā Harry is unseen until the evening, at a celebrity instagram party in LA.
April 25, 2013 ā Taylor has a show in Ohio; she also posts a text conversation with her brother about knowing nothing about life.
Meanwhile, Harry goes to a Rod Stewart concert in LA, then dinner with the Stewart family, including daughter Kimberly. (Stalker Sarah was there and claims she saw Kimberly kissing Harryās cheek/neck) Rod revealed a month later about the date: āHis car was there [outside her house] in the morning. Letās put it that way.ā
April 26, 2013 ā Red tour Indiana surprise song āMine; Taylor officially buys her Rhode Island home. Harry and Kimberly grab coffee the morning after their sleepover.. then are never seen together again.
April 27, 2013 ā Red tour Kentucky surprise song is āOur Songā; Harry leaves LA for Paris
April 28, 2013 ā Taylor is spotted at the gym in LA
April 29, 2013 ā It is reported Taylor has bought a mansion in Rhode Island
April 29-May 26, 2013 ā Harry touring Europe
May 1, 2013 ā Taylor visits Selena in the studio sometime while in LA (Selena says she was present when Taylor wrote Wildest Dreams so I will be noting anytime theyāre together)
May 4, 2013 ā Red tour Detroit, MI surprise song is āOursā and Taylorās intro: āThis is a song about how, when you fall in love everybody starts to give you their opinion. I imagine it could be really hard to make a relationship last, I wouldnāt know, but given that everyone is giving you their own opinion about it, I think that the only opinion you should really listen to is yours. and If you love that person, that should be all that matters.ā
May 7, 2013 ā Harry kisses a girl on a party bus in Norway and allegedly invited her back to his hotel (Full story from two different witnesses x x)
May 9, 2013 ā Harry writes Happily in Sweden (I always believed this song was about that period of time in 2012 when he and Taylor became friends again, before she ultimately left Connor to be with him. It still could be, because they had already finished the last album when that was happening and they have just now started writing sessions for the next one.)
May 17, 2013 ā Rod Stewart is asked in an interview about his dinner with Harry and Kimberly from the previous month and accidentally reveals that Harry stayed the night: āHis car was here [at their family home] in the morning. Letās put it that way..ā Realising he might have said too much, he added, "But he may have just come around to pick something up.ā x
May 18, 2013 ā Taylor posts a picture of roses with a caption from F. Scott Fitzgerald about new beginnings. I have a working theory that roses in some way held a connection to Harry because of all the rose references on 1989. This seems to be hinting that she is moving on..
May 19, 2013 ā Taylor attends the Billboard Music Awards but seems to be in a bad mood. āTo the fans, who come to the shows, who buy the albums, I just want you to know this one thing, you are the longest and best relationship Iāve have ever had.ā and says she only writes about exes she doesnāt want to see again.
May 22, 2013 ā Red tour Glendale, AZ N1 āTeardrops on my Guitarā
May 24, 2013 ā Taylor spotted in Rhode Island; Harry goes to a club in Barcelona, Spain
May 26, 2013 ā Taylor is spotted having dinner in Rhode Island with her parents, Ed Sheeran and Jack Antonoff
May 27, 2013 ā Taylor goes to the beach in Rhode Island with Austin, Ed, Hailee Steinfeld and others.
May 28, 2013 ā Red tour Glendale, AZ N1 āHauntedā and says āThis is a song I hadnāt played on this tour so far. It came from one of my friends who tweeted the lyrics today and it reminded me that I hadnāt played this song in about two years. It has to do with the fact that people talk about ghosts all the time. I just kind of imagine it being this supernatural thing, but thereās another kind of ghost and itās just a person who is out there walking around in the world, just doesnāt love you anymore, thatās a whole different kind of thing altogether.ā
Taylor writes āI Wish You Wouldā - we know this because it was written on tour after a day off with Jack in Rhode Island. Itās also the first song they ever wrote together. My breakdown of the song is a tad long but thereās so much to mine here
The following quote comes from a secret sessioner recalling a story by memory so we have to leave a little room for misinformation -
āTaylor said that she wrote āI Wish You Wouldā a couple of months after her and Harry broke up, and they decided to become friends again and she said this was the first time she had become friends with an ex, to the point where they were comfortable enough to talk about why the relationship didnāt work out. She said he told her about how, after they broke up, he bought a house literally one road adjacent to hers. Every day he would drive home, and accidentally turn into her street, and he told her how he just wanted to stop at her house and see her, but he never did. She said this song is about while he was in the car making the decision not to get out the car and see her, she was sitting in her bedroom, wishing he would make the move and go back to her and just pitch up at her house. She compared it to a classic John Hughes movie where both parties want the same thing but neither has the guts to say anything. Honestly, she spoke so fondly of that relationship.ā
She says she wrote the song a couple months after they broke up and decided to be friends again. We know this song was written May 28th which is almost exactly 2 months after when I theorized they reconnected (March 29-April 2)
He told her he kept turning onto her street by mistake and wanted to stop and see her (I always thought I would see you again -Fire and Rain) but talked himself out of it. This lines up with that week he spent in LA, the report of him house hunting, and the 1 am James Taylor tweet.
Alongside Taylor communicating via arm lyrics and surprise songs. āboth parties want the same thing but neither has the guts to say anything.ā
Until the bridge where Taylor hints at a physical, even sexual late night reconnection
ā2 a.m., here we are
See your face, hear my voice in the dark
We're a crooked love in a straight line down
Makes you wanna run and hide
But it made us turn right back aroundā
Additional quotes:
āThereās āI Wish You Would,ā about an ex who bought a house two blocks from hers (whom she implies was Styles)ā - Rolling Stones interview, 2014.
"Okay so this is an idea called "| Wish You Would". It's kind of about this guy who's like, he's driving down the street at the middle of the night and he passes his ex-girlfriend's house and it's like, he thinks she hates him, but she's still in love with him, very dramatic. This track is sick, hope you like this." - Taylor's voice memo to Jack in the 1989 Deluxe album
The one detail that doesnāt add up is when he bought the house. At the time of the secret session, Harry really had bought a home 2 blocks over from hers earlier that year. But IWYW was written a whole year before that. It is most likely Harry was just house hunting, renting, or visiting a friend in the neighborhood in early 2013. So, either the fan misheard that part of the story or Taylor purposely altered the details.
May 29, 2013 ā Harry lands in London from Spain
June 4-6, 2013 ā Taylor in Nashville; Harry in London

June 19, 2013 ā Taylor is watching Titanic on her couch with her cat, presumably somewhere in Rhode Island; Harry has a show in Nashville and follows John Mayer on twitter a day after Paper Doll release. (Something has obviously gone wrong. Taylor spending her off day in RI when Harry is in her hometown + Harry following John right after he drops his Taylor diss track)
June 20, 2013 ā Taylor spotted by fans in Rhode Island
June 21, 2013 ā Taylor and Selena spend the day together in Rhode Island (wildest dreams possible writing date); Harry has a show in Atlanta, Georgia

June 26, 2013 ā Edmonton, Canada n2 surprise song is āFearlessā; Harry has a show in Massachusetts
June 27-30, 2013 ā Harry in NYC
June 29, 2013 ā Harry meets and hangs out with New York native model Paige Reifler for the first time and they have a casual fling until October ā Paigeās friend takes an intimate photo of her and Harry in their apartment, but it doesnāt leak until September.
June 30, 2013 ā Harry is spotted at the Apple store in NYC wearing Paigeās āPā ring. He has given her his in return
TL;DR-ish:
The first half of the year is⦠chaotic. Taylor starts off angry, shifts into very obvious yearning, then suddenly sheās hopeful and friendly with Harry, before it all turns sour again.
Meanwhile, Harry starts off the year wanting Taylor back but the second things start looking up, he falls right back into old habits and refuses to slow down with the partying and women.
Realistically with both of them touring, there arenāt many chances for them to even see each other. So here is the most likely scenario for me: Harry is floating in and out of her life. He checks in sporadically but just enough to keep her holding on. He blames the exhaustion of tour combined with time zone differences for his ghosting and she canāt say anything because itās fair and he doesnāt owe her anything more. But the real reason? Heās said it himself; the fun is in the chase. Once she softened and heard him out, the chase was over. Especially if they really did meet up late night as Taylor suggested in song.
Taylor clearly still has feelings for him, but doesnāt want to scare him off so she plays it cool. It stops working. The resentment is there, it just comes out in passive aggressive ways.
By May, it feels like things come crashing down againāpossibly after it goes public that Harry spent the night with Rod Stewartās daughter. Her shadiness at the Billboard Awards, her ānew beginningsā post, the surprise song introduction of āHauntedā.. leads me to believe she is being more outspoken for a reason. She has cut it off again.
In June, she says she is currently trying to start choosing good guys. Meanwhile, Harry is spending his nights in NYC with a new model, despite geographically touring near Taylor.
And thatās just the first half of the year⦠the second half gets even messier.

Part One
āI can make the bad guys good for a weekend..ā
March 31, 2012 ā Taylor Swift and Harry Styles meet for the first time at the Nickelodeon Kidsā Choice Awards in Los Angeles. During One Directionās performance of āWhat Makes You Beautiful,ā cameras capture Taylor, Selena Gomez, Ashley Tisdale, and Katy Perry dancing enthusiastically in the front row. Some skeptics believe the repeated camera cuts to Taylor suggest a PR-driven moment. But Iād love to know what award show wouldnāt keep cutting to a group of A-list popstars jumping around together like little school girls..
Taylor allegedly introduces herself backstage later that night according to the The Daily Mirror. (posted April 11, now deleted)
After the awards, Harry follows Taylor on twitter then tweets at 9:20pm (LA time) about meeting some āamazing peopleā..
Taylor was also at Dianna Agronās house at some point this day, most likely after the KCAās. (I donāt believe Taylor and Harry hung out this night anyway.)
April 1, 2012 ā Apparently, when asked by a fan if they could see Taylor and Selena dancing from the stage, Liam says,
"It's hard to see from up on stage but we got a chance to meet and talk with Taylor Swift. Of course we are big fans. I thought Harry might have went to the bathroom just a little bit when we met her."
Iāve seen this quote circulating for years, particularly in Haylor timelines, but Iāve never come across a source. There are a bunch of tweets quoting it on this day and it sounds like something Liam might say, but itās interesting that no one ever mentioned where the quote came from. I canāt confirm its authenticity either. However, he may also be referring to meeting her in this tweet: x
Also, One Direction perform a private gig in LA while Taylor is in Las Vegas at the ACMs. This is where Taylor meets Pat Monahan from Train (co-writer of Babe) for the first time (confirmed by Trainās instagram) and she tells him that āDrive Byā is her favorite song right now.
April 2, 2012 ā Harry is seen by the hotel pool in LA; Taylorās location is unknown. That night, Justin hangs out in the studio with āgood people,ā and tweets about it the next day. Scooter Braun tweetsāthen deletesāabout the studio being āPopstar Hangout Central,ā referring to them as the ānext generationā. This alludes to a group of young pop stars rather than the older artists/rappers Justin was collaborating with at that time. While we know at least three members of One Direction were there the following night, Scooterās tweet makes me wonder if Taylor was actually there this night. A room with Justin Bieber, One Direction, Selena Gomez, and Taylor Swift would certainly be āPopstar Hangout Central.ā
April 3, 2012 ā One Direction (3/5 members confirmed) spent time at Justin Bieberās mansion in Los Angeles, as shown by their posts the following day. Later on June 10, 2012, Justin talks with BBC Radio 2 while in London about the time the boys came over to his house, swam, and hung out. From April 4th until this interview on June 10th, One Direction and Justin Bieber were never in the same city at the same time which would mean this pool party would have to take place on April 3rd at the latest. Every Haylor timeline will mention that Taylor and Selena were ārumoredā to be at this pool party, but the truth is they are never mentioned in any article about this party. The rumor comes from fans and thatās why they never provide a source. Now if you ask me if I think Taylor and Selena were there, I would say itās more likely than not.
April 4, 2012 ā One Direction are seen several times throughout the day leaving their hotel, then at LAX before landing in New York City close to midnight (NY time). Given the tight travel schedule, there was no opportunity for Taylor and Harry to spend time together that day. Side note: Justin tweets about doing radio interviews over the phone all morning which is when I believe he gives the quote about Taylor liking Harry.
April 5, 2012 ā The Daily Mirror ā a popular British tabloid āposts a statement from Justin Bieber in which he commented on One Directionās rapid rise in the U.S.
Bieber reveals: āI already know one of the biggest artists in the world thinks Harry is so hot, but I have been sworn to secrecy.ā
The writer of the article has no idea who it could be and is not even close to guessing Taylor. A follow-up article from a āsource close to Justinā was published to The Mirror a week later, confirming the artist was Taylor, likely because no one was catching on quickly enough. Itās worth noting that the only two articles during this time even hinting at a connection between Harry and Taylor came from Justin himself or a āsourceā in his circle, and both given to The Mirror. To me, this reads like a business strategy between Justin and 1Dās management. The article is essentially a scripted puff piece on One Direction from.. Justin Bieber? Well, Scooter Braun and Justin have previously tweeted in support of 1D and were reportedly in business talks with them as early as January. Tweets and interviews from this time period suggested Justin was exploring a potential collaboration with the band. I donāt know exactly what Scooter stood to gain from promoting the direct competition of his own clientsāJustin and The Wantedābut there was clearly something in it for them. My current theory is that Scooter Braun was either trying to buy the band or make Justin their āmentorā. Whatever the plan was, One Direction (or Simon Cowell) ultimately chose a different path. And sure enough, by the end of April and onward, all five of the boys are denying any plans for collaboration, the āHaylorā chatter disappears, and the vibe between Justin and 1D shiftsājust slightly from Justinās side, into something more competitive.
In conclusion, no one would have known about Taylor crushing on Harry if it werenāt for Justin. While Scooter Braun may have planted these articles as PR for One Direction, this had nothing to do with Taylorās PR team.
Meanwhile, One Direction attend Saturday Night Live rehearsals all afternoon and get interviewed by MTV, during which they were asked about the female celebrities seen dancing to their performance at the Kidsā Choice Awards. The other members playfully teased Harry, prompting a mention of Taylor. x
āOh yeah! Thatās the one. Jackpot!ā ā Louis
At 8:01 p.m. (NY time), Harry tweeted lyrics from āSweet Dispositionā by The Temper Trapāa song that will continue to carry significance throughout their relationship. The very next line is literally the secret message of Treacherous. A potential hangout on this night cannot be ruled out.
April 6, 2012 ā The day before Saturday Night Live, Harry is stopped by fans walking Broadway and then entering the back of his hotel around 2 p.m. where he takes pictures with a few lucky fans. He is later pictured outside of SIR Studios with the rest of the boys that evening for music rehearsal. All pics here. Since Harry had most of the day off, and itās later revealed that there was a āweekend where they got really close,ā itās possible this was the start of that time. Even though there are never any confirmed sightings of Harry and Taylor together, I have been noting any longer stretches where they were both off the radar, as those could line up with when their relationship began to develop.
April 7, 2012 ā One Direction leave their hotel at 3:30 p.m. for SNL final rehearsals, with the live show airing at 11:30 p.m. and ending around 1 a.m.
After five days out of the public eye, Taylor is spotted in the streets of NYC..
..then at Otto, having dinner with Emma Stone and Dianna Agron at 11:22 p.m.ājust 2.4 miles from the SNL studio. Dianna is spotted back at her hotel a little after 1 a.m. without Taylor.
Following the taping, Harryās whereabouts are unknown, and he does not return to his hotel that night (confirmed by the dozens of fans camping at the front and back doors). If thereās one night they spent together, it would be this one.
Photos began circulating on Twitter claiming Harry was at a gay bar called Le Bain following his Saturday Night Live appearance. I looked into it, and while I can confirm the photos were indeed taken at Le Bain ā a regular, all inclusive nightclub in NYC ā they are not from that night. It is likely from the previous month when he spent the majority of March in the city.
First, the red-haired woman pictured is Aimee Phillips, a DJ and mutual friend of Harry and Nick Grimshaw. I identified the man beside Harry as Jonny Pierce, a friend of Aimeeās who frequently appears on her Instagram.
On the morning of April 7, Jonny tweeted about flying from Rome to meet Nick Grimshaw, who was in London. Meanwhile, Aimee tweeted that she would be attending the taping of SNL that night, and that she missed both Jonny and Nick, confirming that Jonny was not in New York with her that evening. The following morning, both Jonny and Nick were documented spending Easter together in London.
So there you have it. Harryās whereabouts that night remain unknown but I believe he was with Taylor.
April 8, 2012 ā Taylor is allegedly spotted at the āRussian Military Museumā with her āboyfriendā. However, the original tweet that made this claim is now deleted. Without a confirmed time zone from the person who took this screenshot, the timestamp here is unreliable. Personally, I believe this was a troll post. Not only is there no known āRussian Military Museumā in the area, it is also a random obscure place for a new couple to be seen publicly.
Around 4 p.m., Harry pops back up at JFK Airport with One Direction. From there, they fly to Los Angeles for a layover before heading to Australia. (because of the drastic time zone difference, they land in Australia on April 10th, effectively skipping April 9th altogether.)
That evening, around 7 p.m., Taylor is spotted at the Bowery Hotel with Dianna Agron. According to the source, Taylor was not a guest there and reportedly stays only for a couple of hours. (So we can safely assume Taylor is not in NYC for Dianna because why wouldnāt Taylor just stay at the Bowery Hotel with her? We know Dianna was staying there the entire trip based on photos and multiple sightings from someone who was admittedly ācelebrity stalkingā the lobby that weekend. But Taylor only shows up onceāafter Harry had already left New Yorkāand leaves shortly after.)
April 9, 2012 ā Page Six breaks a story linking Harry to singer Lily Halpern, alleging she was seen leaving his hotel room in New York City. Following the leak, Lily begins offering quotes to several outlets. She gives an official interview on April 12, and claims they first met nearly two months earlier, when One Direction opened for Big Time Rush in NYāa group she had also previously worked with. According to Lily, they have spent time together everytime Harry was in New York since then, including this recent visit where they watched Flubber in his hotel room. This detail aligns with a tweet Harry posted about the film on April 5th, just hours after arriving in NYC. Lily retweeted this and posted about watching Flubber herself, effectively connecting the dots for fans and gaining brief media attention. Despite Harryās rep stating that theyāve never heard of her, they never said Harry didnāt know her. I believe her story although Iām sure her eagerness to spill private details cut whatever they had short. The timeline still suggests this took place prior to Harry and Taylorās weekend together.
April 11, 2012 ā(busiest day ever) The Daily Mirror leaks the story about Taylor and Harryās first meeting at the KCAs, the same article I referenced twice earlier. Do I believe it actually happened? Honestly, yes. The quote about her ādramatically fanning herselfā is what sold it for me. Sheās done that so much that I can present several examples lol.
That said, someone in that circle clearly betrayed Taylor by giving this information and I suspect the source was Scooter Braun. He was not only present that night, but also spoke to the 1D boys.
Interestingly, the original article has since been deleted. I suspect Taylorās publicist stepped in to scrub it from circulation. This was a brand new connection she was actively pursuing and it was too early to let the public get ahold of it just yet. It also painted her as desperate and intense ā not the image sheād want Harry or general public to see while trying to come off as the nonchalant cool girl. And really, what other reason would The Mirror have for pulling such a buzzworthy story?
On the same day, The Daily Mail reports another alleged romantic connection for Harry, this time with New York-based photographer Sarah-Louise Colivet. Her story bears striking similarities to Lily Halpernās. According to the report, Sarah and Harry also met in NYC back in March where they reportedly shared a kiss. When a friend of hers mentioned Harry on Facebook, Sarah responded that they would be āreunited this Wednesdayāāwhich happened to be the exact day Harry arrived in New York City, and the same morning he was allegedly with Lily. Her accurate knowledge of his travel schedule lends her some credibility; however, we donāt know if they ever met up.
So basically it seems Harry spent the month of March in New York City, frequenting clubs and building a roster. From here, we will continue to highlight Harryās flirty nature and his love for the nightlife to show why Taylor wouldāve had a hard time trusting him.
On One Directionās first day in Australia while being interviewed by NovaFM, Harry inquires about the attractive receptionist, saying sheās lovely and has āGREAT..mannersā. The receptionist later reveals that Zayn actually asked for her number and texted her, so maybe Harry was just teasing Zayn here. (x)
That night, Harry and Zayn go clubbing together for 3 hours until about 2am their time. They were extremely drunk and rambunctious, and Harry allegedly rejected a girl that came onto him.
Meanwhile, Taylor is back in L.A. to write and record the first demo of āTreacherousā with Dan Wilson. (I was able to confirm it was his California studio based on his Instagram posts.) Taylor shares a photo on her own Instagram with the caption, āRecording the next album. So happy.ā
According to Wilson, Taylor came in with the first four lines already writtenāan idea sheād come up with in the car on the way over. They finished the song together and recorded the demo.
āI wrote āTreacherousā with Dan Wilson, and we came up with a way to say, you know, āThis is dangerous and I realize that I might get hurt if I go through with this, if I move forward with you. But⦠but I want to.ā You know? Itās like that kind of conflicted feeling of it being a risk every time you fall in love ā especially with certain types of people [laughs].ā ā Taylor
Now I want to offer my own rebuttal to arguments Iāve seen for other potential muses
1. Jake Gyllenhaal doesnāt make sense as the subject. The timeline doesnāt align. Why would Taylor write a song about falling in love with Jake over a year after their breakupāespecially while sheās seemingly experiencing those emotions with someone new?
Furthermore, Taylor says āTreacherousā and āI Knew You Were Troubleā were written about the same person. (the interview is no longer online but it was with Brian Mansfield. here is his tweet about it with the link and here is the quote.) This debunks either song being about Jake since we know most of the Red album is. She separates these two songs to be about someone completely different.
2. Harry Styles: The secret message in the liner notes is āWonāt stop ātil itās over,ā a lyric from The Temper Trapās Sweet Disposition. That same song was tweeted about by Harry earlier that month, and he later got a tattoo of a misheard lyric. Over time, this song becomes part of the lore between them and they even have a disagreement about the correct lyrics later. Taylor choosing the correct lyric as the hidden message feels deliberate, like a subtle nod or inside joke.
As for the argument that āthey had just metā and she wouldnāt write something this emotional for Harry after only a couple of weeksāhave we all forgotten who weāre talking about? This is Taylor Swift. (Enchanted? Matty Healy?) Whatever they had in April clearly made an impact, so much so that by the time they reconnected in October, sheās writing lines like āthis love came back to me.ā
3. Dianna Agron is the only other potential muse that makes any sense, in my opinion. But given the secret message and the connection to IKYWT, this one is clearly about Harry.
April 12, 2012 ā Taylor and Dan Wilson also write āCome Back.. Be Hereā during their 2 day session.
Here are a few quotes from Taylor explaining the meaning of this song.
āCome Back Be Here is a song that I wrote with Dan Wilson about somebody I just met and it's about the feeling of just meeting someone and having all these sparks and all this and then they leave and they have to go somewhere else, you know, and the anxiety and wondering, "Is this ... How am I gonna see you again? Like, I want to. How's that gonna happen?" So, there's a lot of fear that's involved with falling in love, especially when you're dealing with distance.ā (x)
"I wrote about falling for someone and they have to go away for work. They're traveling, you're traveling, and you think about them, but you're wondering how it's going to work when there's so much distance between you." (x)
āIt's a song that I wrote about a guy that I met. You know, you meet someone, and they just kinda happen to go away and it's like.. Long distance all the sudden and you're like⦠But.. But.. But but.. Come back! Be Here!ā (x)
Why I think itās about Harry:
The timing, first of all. That fact that itās written just days after meeting Harry, having a special weekend together, then him leaving for tour..and one day after Treacherous is written.
The London/NYC debate is often the main reason people dismiss the idea that this song is about Harry, because he left for Australia instead of London. However, I believe the choice of āLondonā was intentional on Taylorās part. Mentioning Australia wouldāve been too specific and directly tied to Harry, making it easy to fact-check. However, London is a common city associated with celebrity events which makes the reference feel more universal and keeps the muse harder to pin down. (And clearly it worked. Iāve seen at least four different people theorized to be the subject of this song.) That said, if you just look at the timeline and consider who she was involved with at the time, the connection becomes more straightforward. Focus on the sentiment of the song. Harryās grueling work schedule is what made Taylor wonder when she would see him again. Australia to London to Sweden in the span of a month before embarking on another US tour at the end of May.
Based on the timeline I outlined from the first week of April, Harry and Taylor could have only spent three or four times together at most before he left and realistically, they barely knew each other. They meet in LA. He goes to New York for work (āI guess youāre in New York todayā), so Taylor goes to see him. They have the weekend together then he leaves the country to resume touring, leaving Taylor in NYC (āNew York, be here.. but youāre in Londonā). Based on the reports suggesting Harry didnāt return to his hotel the night before he left the city, I believe the āone last kiss then you catch your flight right when I was just about to fallā really happened. That lyric and ā4am, the second day. how strange that I donāt know you at all..ā perfectly capture how brief and fleeting but impactful their time together was before he left. Harry later references Come Back.. Be Here in a song he wrote in 2014 āI didnāt come back and I wasnāt thereā basically claiming himself as the inspiration for it. I think he knows better than us who itās about.
Some skeptics like to point out that Jake was in New York then London for work during his relationship with Taylor. While thatās true, the majority of their time together was spent in New York, and it wasnāt a long-distance relationship. By the time he went to London (which was only for a few days), they were already about three months into dating and had just spent Thanksgiving together with his family. At that point, Taylor wasnāt in the early, tentative stage of ājust about to fall.ā This song is clearly about someone she has just met. The relationship is not even official yet.
For those who believe this song was about Zac Efron because he happened to be in New York then London when it was written, Iād argue that theory doesnāt hold much weight. Taylor and Zac were likely nothing more than co-stars. They were never once seen together (outside of public work events) before or after their contractually obligated promo appearances for The Lorax in February 2012. Also, they met back in 2009.
And finally, Swiftgron. While I do consider that something may have happened between Taylor and Dianna, this song doesnāt fit that timeline. By the time Taylor wrote it, she and Dianna had been in each otherās orbit for a while and had spent most of the last month together. They continue hanging out regularly after this song was written. There was never a period where Dianna was constantly leaving for long periods of time, as the song suggests. Taylor emphasizes in both the lyrics and her comments that the song is about meeting someone, immediately forming a connection, and then quickly being separated with no clear answer to when theyād be together again. She describes being āworlds awayā with āSO much distanceā between them. That simply doesnāt reflect her dynamic with Dianna during this time.
April 16, 2012 ā While being interviewed in Australia, Harry is asked if he and Taylor have been texting. After taking a suspiciously long pause, he seems to confirm with a smirk, saying āUmmm.. we met in America. And sheās very nice, yeah.ā (x)
April 17, 2012 ā During an Australian interview, Harry is pretty giggly and cheeky the entire time with the pretty blonde interviewer. However I will say, she is also showing unprofessionalism here with her legs resting against his and even touching his thigh at times throughout the interview. At one point, she runs braless and Harry says this is the best interview heās ever done. (x)

The Haylor Timeline
Introduction
What really happened between Taylor Swift and Harry Styles? Itās a question thatās lingered for over a decade.
This isnāt just a basic overview, itās part investigation-part analysis. Weāre diving deep into the Haylor lore using interviews, songs, and photos to build an extensive timeline. I prioritize evidence over assumption, so while Iāll share the occasional theory, Iāll always keep the receipts front and center. But at the end of the day we donāt know these people so I am always open to being wrong. I feel the need to add that this is not a ālate stage Haylorā timeline. Evidence leads me to believe that it was over by the end of 2013.
Disclaimer: If you find any new information in this timeline and choose to use it for your own work, please give credit!!! Even if the new info is a simple picture, you donāt see the hours of digging that led up to coming across that picture on my own. I put a lot of work into this. Please be kind.
A few quick FAQ-style answers to end off on:
Do I believe in Larry?
Short answer: no. I think Harry and Louis were both bi-curious teens. Their friendship may have blurred boundaries. What started as joking around may have evolved into something more complex. Itās not unusual for teenagers navigating friendship, identity, and sexuality. I believe whatever they shared ended when Louis began dating Eleanor, his REAL girlfriend and he has since publicly identified as straight. So we respect that. As for Harry, I think he eventually embraced his attraction to both men and women.
Am I a Gaylor?
Iām not fully convinced, but Iāve seen enough to keep my mind open to the possibility of Taylor being bisexual. While many Gaylors view her as openly queer around her close circle, I donāt necessarily get that impression myself. To me, she reads more as someone who may generally present as straight but carries deeper, more complicated feelings beneath the surface. Iām more inclined to believe that while she may have had girl crushes or gay experiences in her earlier years, that may not be what she identifies with now. And thatās okay. I think the most likely scenario is that sheās entertained her curiosity once or twice before turning her attention back to men. (And itās obvious she looooves men)
Thereās definitely something there, something hard to define. Sexuality is fluid, and discovering it can be happy, free, confusing, and lonely at the same time. I think itās a little naive to claim sheās either 100% straight or that all her hetero relationships were fake. The truth likely lives somewhere in between.
What about Harry and Nick Grimshaw?
Honestly, I will not even be entertaining Gryles in this timeline. I could totally see them being involved in 2011 when they first met. But they have consistently hung out, partied with their friend group and even spent holidays together for a decade. So are we to believe they are still together or can we admit that queer best friends can exist?
Thanks for sticking with me if you made it this far! And as always keep it kind! Alright letās open the case! - B

Writing of 1989 Timeline
DISCLAIMER: This post wants to showcase how Red by Taylor Swift came to be, what challenges and discoveries she made while making her fourth album, but most of all how curious, passionate and eager to learn she is.
Please, credit me if you take info from this timeline.
1989 changed Taylor's career forever. If Red had just sprinkles of pop sounds, 1989 was marketed as a pure pop album from the get-go.
While many fans and critics kind of expected that, it seems like:
Taylor didn't have a clear direction from the start (except for the cohesiveness): āI wanted it to be a sonically cohesive album, and it ended up really being the first Iāve done since Fearless. I also wanted the songs to sound exactly how the emotions felt. I know thatās pretty vague, so I really didnāt know where it was going to go, but I knew that I wanted to work with the collaborators I had such crazy electricity with on Red, like Max Martin. I wanted to do some things that sounded nothing like what we had done before.ā
She knew that she didn't want another Red: āWhen people say that they like one of my albums, like when people told me that Red was their favorite album I'd done, I didn't take that as, 'So, I should make that again'. I took that as, 'Great, awsome, now I wanna make them like this new album just as much if not more than the last album.' But I want them to like it for different reasons.ā
She was worried about the change of direction of her music: āI worry about everything. Some days I wake up in a mind-set of, like, āOkay, itās been a good run.ā By afternoon, I could have a change of mood and feel like anything is possible and I canāt wait to make this kind of music Iāve never made before. And then by evening, I could be terrified of the whole thing again. And then at night, Iāll write a song before bed.ā
October 17, 2012: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor writes This Love in LA. This will be the last song produced by Nathan Chapman and the only one recorded in Nashville.
āThe last time I wrote a poem that ended up being a song, I was writing in my journal and I was writing about something that had happened in my life ā it was about a year ago ā and I just wrote this really really short poem. It said, 'This love is good /this love is bad / this love is alive back from the dead / these hands had to let it go free / and this love came back to me.' And I just wrote it down, closed the book and put it back on my night stand [ā¦] All of a sudden in my head I just started hearing this melody happen, and then I realized that it was going to be a song.ā
Handwritten lyrics:
November 18, 2012: Taylor meets Jack Antonoff and his band, fun., for the first time in Frankfurt, Germany, while at the MTV Europe Music Awards. They bond over 80s music.
January 4, 2013: Taylor is seen in a boat without Harry Styles, ready to return to LA from the Virgin Islands.
She will wear the same dress in the Out Of The Woods music video (and also in Look What You Made Me Do)
January 10, 2013: Taylor tweets "Back in the studio. Uh oh...". She will confirm that the song was All You Had To Do Was Stay on October 27, 2014 on Tumblr.
Candids here;
āThereās a song on my album called 'All You Had To Do Was Stay.' I was having this dream, that was actually one of those embarrassing dreams, where youāre mortified in the dream, youāre like humiliated. In the dream, my ex had come to the door to beg for me to talk to him or whatever, and I opened up the door and I went to go say, 'Hi,' or 'What are you doing here?' or something ā something normal ā but all that came out was this high-pitched singing that said, 'Stay!' It was almost operatic. So I wrote this song, and I used that sound in the song. Weird, right? I woke up from the dream, saying the weird part into my phone, figuring I had to include it in something because it was just too strange not to. In pop, itās fun to play around with little weird noises like that.ā
January 11, 2013: Taylor is seen again at Conway Studios, likely to continue working on All You Had To Do Was Stay.
January 15, 2013: Taylor posts a picture of herself in the studio, with the caption "Somewhere in LA". She'll later reveal that she was writing How You Get The Girl.
āThe song āHow You Get The Girlā is a song that I wrote about how you get the girl back if you ruined the relationship somehow and she wonāt talk to you anymore.
March 6, 2013: Taylor is seen going to a studio in LA.
March 23, 2013: Taylor posts a picture of herself playing guitar, which might mean that she was working on a new song: "Pre show. Columbia, South Carolina". This could be either Wonderland, New Romantics or a vault song.
May 27, 2013: While in Rhode Island for the Memorial Day weekend, Jack plays Taylor an instrumental track that will later become I Wish You Would.
ā'I Wish You Wouldā is a song that I wrote with Jack Antonoff and it was the first song we ever worked on together. I think, for this song, we wanted to create a sort of John Hughes movie visual with pining and, you know, one personās over here and misses the other person but is too prideful and wonāt say it. Meanwhile this other person is here and missing the same person; theyāre missing each other but not saying it. And I had this happen in my life and so I wanted to kind of narrate it in a very cinematic way where itās like youāre seeing two scenes play out and then in the bridge youāre seeing the final scene, where it resolves itself. So it says, 'Itās a crooked love in a straight line down, makes you wanna run and hide but it makes you turn right back around.ā It kind of is like that dramatic love thatās never really quite where it needs to be and that tension it creates.ā
[Voice Memo Intro Transcript] āThis is another way Iāve written songs recently. This is a song I did with Jack Antonoff, and Jack is one of my friends and so were hanging out and he pulled out his phone and goes āI made this amazing track the other day. Itās so cool, I love these guitar sounds.ā And he played it for me and immediately I could hear this finished song in my head, and I just said āPlease, please let me have that. Let me play with it, send it to me.ā And so he sent it to me and I was on tour and this was me playing the track on my laptop recording me singing the vocal into my phone and it ended up being a song called 'I Wish You Would', because Jack wrote back and said āI love thatā. So this is another way of writing, itās writing to track.ā
[Secret Sessions] āTaylor said that she wrote āI Wish You Wouldā a couple of months after her and Harry Styles broke up, and they decided to become friends again and she said this was the first time she had become friends with an ex, to the point where they were comfortable enough to talk about why the relationship didnāt work out. She said he told her about how, after they broke up, he bought a house literally one road adjacent to hers. Every day he would drive home, and accidentally turn into her street, and he told her how he just wanted to stop at her house and see her, but he never did. She said this song is about while he was in the car making the decision to get out the car and see her, she was sitting in her bedroom, wishing he would make the move and go back to her and just pitch up at her house. She compared it to a classic John Hughes movie where both parties want the same thing but neither has the guts to say anything. Honestly, she spoke so fondly of that relationship.ā [this is from a secret sessioner and therefore it should be taken with a grain of salt]
Between May 28 and June 2, 2013: Taylor writes I Wish You Would. She settled in Rhode Island basically all summer, so it's possible that she went to Jack's studio in New York by car without being seen and especially photographed, cause I couldn't find any pictures with the same outfit. Conway Studios are also credited but it's possible that she recorded background vocals there. Taylor was in LA in late August.
June 7, 2013: During an interview at the CMA Music Festival, Taylor confirms that she has started writing her next album.
[Transcript by me] ā[The new album] is starting, all the anxiety is starting and when the anxiety starts, then the writing happens right afterward usually. I like to write for about two years before I'm finished with an album because at this point I kind of know that whenever I read in the first year is going to get away, because I'm going to like it but it's going to sound a little bit like the last project I had, and the second year usually ends up sounding like the next project. So I think at this point I feel like staying the same is the easy way to go but it's not the way that I want to go creatively. I think you need to challenge yourself, I think you need to change up your influences, I think you need to be inspired by different things that you've been inspired by before. It's harder to call people you don't know, it's harder to think of topics you haven't covered and think of new ways to say old emotions that everyone feels. I think one of the things that I'm happiest with in the last year is the acceptance level in country music for me experimenting and for me trying to evolve and challenge myself musically because I think it's never felt better to be on that stadium stage performing knowing that and so welcoming of change.ā
July 13, 2013: After a show in New Jersey, Taylor has an interview with Rolling Stone, where she says that she has been writing a lot.
āThe floodgates just opened the last couple weeks,ā she says of the songwriting process. āIām getting to that point where Iām irritating to be around because Iāll be with you for half the conversation and then the second half of the conversation Iām clearly editing the second verse of whatever Iām writing in my head. I really loved collaborating: you work with a lot of different people and you find the people you have this dream connection with in the studio. I know those people and I know the ones I want to go back to. But I also have a really long list of the people I admire and I would really love to go and contact. So thatās kind of where that is. I think that the idea of having a different approach to every single one of my albums is so exciting to me. I never want to make the same record twice. Why do it? Whatās the point? Itās so overwhelming that when youāre starting a project there are such endless possibilities if youāre willing to evolve and experiment. If youāre willing to become a different version of yourself, you can really go anywhere with it. And thatās kind of where I am. The kind of the laboratory experimental stage of really catching onto a new thing that Iām liking.ā
Somewhere around June and early September 2013: Taylor and Jack write Sweeter Than Fiction. No credits are available but we know that it's the second song on which Taylor and Jack worked, so that places it before I Wish You Would and Out Of The Woods.
In 2014, Lena Dunham (Jack's girlfriend at the time) posted this photo of Jack and Taylor working on the song at Jack's house.
September 15, 2013: Jack completes the instrumental track that will later become Out Of The Woods, after his show was cancelled.
[Jack Antonoff] āWhen I did the track for Out of the Woods, which is a Taylor song that I'm really proud of, there was some issue at a venue and our show was canceled that night and I didn't have my stuff, I had left it on the bus, so I only had these old samples on what was on my laptop, and caught up that 'oh oh'' thing, and I only had one drum kit on there, and these dumb little things sometimes turn into a great song.ā
Somewhere around September and October 2013: Taylor writes Out Of The Woods.
Voice memo here;
[Jack Antonoff] Although Antonoff and Swift shared studio time for some of their other 1989 songs while working throughout 2014, āOut of the Woodsā was completed as a long-distance collaboration. āSheās very natural -ā when she gets an idea, it just happens very quickly. I would send her these tracks, and when an idea would happen, weād be 5,000 miles apart or whatever, but she would start emailing me these voice notes like crazy and it would just be happening so quickly that thereād be this excitement. Thereās a frantic feeling in the song,ā he says. āWhatās interesting about āOut of the Woodsā is that it doesnāt really let up. It starts with a pretty big anthemic vocal sample thatās me, and then thereās a drum sample that kicks in thatās kind of huge, and then you donāt really know how youāre going to get any bigger, but then the chorus hits and it just explodes even larger. And then the bridge hits, and it gets even more huge.āWhen I was working on the track, I was thinking a lot about My Morning Jacket,ā Antonoff continues, āand how everything they do, every sound is louder than the last, and somehow it feels like everything is just fāing massive. And thatās the feeling that I went for. It started out big, and then I think the obvious move would have been to do a down chorus, but the idea was to keep pushing.ā Antonoff is excited to share the rest of his work with Swift onĀ 1989, but he views āOut of the Woodsā as a highlight on the project. āThis song means a great deal to me. On a production level, on a writing level, Taylorās lyrics and her melodies ā thereās something very important about this song.ā
[Jack Antonoff] āAfter 'I Wish You Would' and 'Sweeter Than Fiction', we did 'Out Of The Woods'. So it was the third thing we worked on together, and probably the easiest. I sent her the track for it, and she sent back a voice note with the verse and chorus in what felt like five seconds. And it was just perfect. It's eerie how similar it is to what the final product is.ā
āIt kind of conjured up all these feelings of anxiety I had in a relationship where everybody was watching, everybody was commenting on it. Youāre constantly just feeling like, āAre we out of the woods yet? Whatās the next thing gonna be? Whatās the next hurdle weāre gonna have to jump over?ā It was interesting to write about a relationship where youāre just honestly like, āThis is probably not gonna last, but how long is it gonna last?ā Those fragile relationships... It doesnāt mean theyāre not supposed to happen. The whole time we were having happy memories, or crazy memories, or ridiculously anxious times, in my head it was just like, āAre we okay yet? Are we there yet? Are we out of this yet?āā
āThat line is in there because it's not only the actual, literal narration of what happened in a particular relationship I was in, it's also a metaphor. 'Hit the brakes too soon' could mean the literal sense of, we got in an accident and we had to deal with the aftermath. But also, the relationship ended sooner than it should've because there was a lot of fear involved. And that song touches on a huge sense of anxiety that was, kind of, coursing through that particular relationship, because we really felt the heat of every single person in the media thinking they could draw up the narrative of what we were going through and debate and speculate. I don't think it's ever going to be easy for me to find love and block out all those screaming voices.ā
October 21, 2013: Sweeter Than Fiction is released. Big Machine was originally not on board with the release since they wanted a dormant period between album releases.
Late 2013: Taylor writes Bad Blood, after Katy Perry announces her Prismatic World Tour.
āFor years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, āAre we friends,or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?ā Then last year, the other star crossed a line. She did something so horrible. I was like, āOh, weāre just straight-up enemies.ā And it wasnāt even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And Iām surprisingly non-confrontational ā you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. Itās awkward, and I donāt like it.ā
āThat was about losing a friend... But then people cryptically tweet about what you meant. I never said anything that would point a finger in the specific direction of one specific person, and I can sleep at night knowing that. I knew the song would be assigned to a person, and the easiest mark was someone who I didnāt want to be labeled with this song. It was not a song about heartbreak. It was about the loss of friendship.ā
October 20 to 22, 2013: Taylor is in Cape Town (South Africa) shooting The Giver. One of the members of the cast is Alexsander SkarsgƄrd. He is said to have inspired Wildest Dreams (or at least he's the most popular theory, as far as I know), because the music video is set in Africa and it features Clint Eastwood's son Scott as love interest, just like Alexsander is actor Stellan SkarsgƄrd's son, but we don't actually know more about the song.
āI think the way I used to approach relationships was very idealistic. I used to go into them thinking, āMaybe this is the one ā weāll get married and have a family, this could be foreverā. Whereas now I go in thinking, āHow long do we have on the clock ā before something comes along and puts a wrench in it, or your publicist calls and says this isnāt a good idea?āā
Note: Selena Gomez was present when Taylor wrote this song.
Handwritten lyrics:
November 19, 2013: Taylor records Blank Space. This is based on the wall behind her on an Instagram post from this day, the credits, and the behind the scenes clip.
Voice memo here;
Behind the Scenes here;
āEvery few years, the media finds something they unanimously agree is annoying about me. 2012-2013 they thought I was dating too much, because I dated two people in a year and a half. āOh, a serial dater. She only writes songs to get emotional revenge on guys. Sheās a man-hater, donāt let her near your boyfriend.ā It was kind of excessive and at first it was hurtful, but then I found a little bit of comedy in it. This character is so interesting, though. If you read these gossip sites, they describe how I am so opposite to my actual life: Iām clingy, and Iām awful, and I throw fits, and thereās drama. An emotionally fragile, unpredictable mess. I painted a whole picture of this character. She lives in a mansion with marble floors, she wears Dolce & Gabbana around the house, and she wears animal print unironically. So I created this whole character and I had fun doing it.ā
November 21, 2013: While at the American Music Awards, Taylor tells Billboard that she has around seven or eight songs ready.
[Transcript] āWe got a lot already,ā says Swift. āThere are probably seven or eight songs that I know I want on the record. Itās really ahead of schedule for me. Iām just stoked because itās already evolved into a new sound, and thatās all I wanted. And I would have taken two years to make that happen, but it just kind of happened naturally, so thatās all I could really ask for.ā
December 2013: Taylor meets Diane Warren and they write Say, Don't Go.
[Diane Warren to Rolling Stone] Warren, who typically writes on her own, says the two of them āsat down and wrote the song,ā which was released Friday as one ofĀ 1989 (Taylorās Version)ās vault tracks, āfrom scratchā during the last few days of 2013. She remembers being impressed with how specific Swift was with her lyricism and how considerate she was about how her fans might receive it. āShe was very particular about how she said certain things. It was a really interesting experience. She gets her audience,ā Warren says. āSheās deeply aware of how her fans want to hear something. I canāt explain it, but thatās probably why sheās the biggest fucking star in the world.ā
2013: Taylor writes New Romantics and Wonderland. Not much is known about these songs, except that they were both written in 2013.
[About New Romantics] āPeople will say, 'Let me set you up with someone', and Iām just sitting there saying, āThatās not what Iām doing. Iām not lonely. Iām not looking.ā They just donāt get it. Iāve learned that just because someone is cute and wants to date you, thatās not a reason to sacrifice your independence and allow everyone to say whatever they want about you. Iām not doing that anymore. Itād take someone really special for me to undergo the circumstances I have to go through to experience a date. I donāt know how I would ever have another person in my world trying to have a relationship with me, or a family.ā
New Romantics handwritten lyrics:
Wonderland Handwritten lyrics:
January 1, 2014: Taylor records Say, Don't Go.
[Diane Warren to Rolling Stone] Several days after writing the song together, they got into Warrenās office to record a demo, where Swift played it on her acoustic guitar. āWe demoed it on New Yearās Day. And Iām a workaholic, and thatās fine for me,ā she says. āBut I remember being impressed that she did, too. Everybodyās on vacation, but she showed up.ā
January 6, 2014: Taylor decides to look for a house in New York.
[Lover Journal] LA. So I've decided I want to look at places in New York. I know I went through this phase months ago, but it has to mean something that i've circled back to it, right? You know what they say, if you love something let it go and if it comes back... blah blah blah. so I'm leaving the day after tomorrow. Dating is awful. Love is fiction/ a myth. I'm over it all.
January 21, 2014: Taylor sends Ryan Tedder the I Know Places Voice Memo.
January 22, 2014: [From the 1989 Booklet] Taylor and Ryan finish and record I Know Places.
āI had this idea of like, when youāre in love, along the lines of 'Out of the Woodsā, itās very precious, itās fragile. As soon as the world gets ahold of it, whether itās your friends or people around town hear about it... itās kind of like the first thing people want to do when they hear that people are in love is just kind of try to ruin it. I kind of was in a place where I was like, āNo one is gonna sign up for this. There are just too many cameras pointed at me. There are too many ridiculous elaborations on my life. Itās just not ever gonna work.ā But I decided to write a love song, just kind of like, āWhat would I say if I met someone really awesome and they were like, hey, Iām worried about all this attention you get?ā So I wrote this song called āI Know Placesā about, āHey, I know places we can hide. We could outrun them.ā Iām so happy that it sounds like the urgency that it sings.ā
January 23, 2014: Taylor and Ryan Tedder write Welcome To New York. Ryan produces a demo in three hours. This demo is the one included in the album.
āI wanted to start 1989 with this song because New York has been an important landscape and location for the story of my life in the last couple of years. I dreamt and obsessed over moving to New York, and then I did it. The inspiration that I found in that city is hard to describe and to compare to any other force of inspiration Iāve ever experienced in my life. Itās an electric city.ā
[Ryan Tedder] āI thought we were going to walk in and start something from scratch because that's what I was used to. Then she calls me and says, 'Is it cool if I already have an idea?' I said, 'Sure.' She said, 'I have this song, I'm obsessed with New York and I just moved there, I want to write an ode to New York because no one's done it in a long time.' And then she sent me a voice memo. She's like, 'I want it to sound like the 1980s.' So the next day I brought in a Juno-106, which is a very 1980s keyboard, and I literally programmed that entire song right in front of her. It was very much on the fly, and that song was done in about three hours. And I did the rest of the production I think later that week.ā
Handwritten lyrics:
January 26, 2014: Night of the 56th Grammy Awards. Taylor delivers a legendary performance of All Too Well, but loses the Album Of The Year Award to Random Access Memory by Daft Punk. This will prompt Taylor to make a "sonically cohesive" pop album.
[Lover Journal] January 25th. LA. It's the middle of the night and I was at the Clive Davis Party tonight which means... the Grammys are tomorrow. Never have I felt so good about our chances. Never have I wanted something as badly as I want to hear them say 'Red' is the Album of the Year.
āIt was the night of the Grammys this year. I remember going home and playing a lot of the new music I had recorded for some of my backup singers and one of my best friends. We were all sitting in the kitchen and I was playing them all this music, and they were just saying, āYou know, this is very eighties. Itās very clear to us that this is so eighties.ā We were just talking and talking about how itās kind of a rebirth in a new genre, how thatās a big, bold step. Kind of starting a part of your career over. When they left that night, I just had this very clear moment of, āItās gotta be called 1989.āā
āI woke up one morning at 4 a.m. and I decided the album is called 1989. Iāve been making ā80s synth pop, Iām just gonna do that. Iām calling it a pop record. Iām not listening to anyone at my label. Iām starting tomorrow. I liked the idea of collaborating. But with 1989 I decided to narrow down the list. It wasnāt going to be 10 producers, it was going to be a very small team of four or five people I always wanted to work with, or loved working with. And Max Martin and I were going to oversee it, and we were going to make a sonically cohesive record again.ā
January 2014: Taylor writes You Are In Love. This is actually speculation but it's based on (1) Taylor going to NY in early January and (2) Jack Antonoff confirming that it was the fourth song they did and (3) it's the only Antonoff-produced song that is copyrighted in 2014. Based on the credits, I'm pretty sure that Taylor and Jack worked on the song separately, with Jack recording the instrumental at the Jungle City Studios in NY (which is a studio that Jack used in 2014 to record Bleachers' first album Strange Desire) and Taylor recording the vocals at Conway Studio in LA.
āI wrote it with my friend Jack Antonoff whoās dating my friend Lena. Jack sent me this song, it was just an instrumental track he was working on and immediately I knew the song it needed to be. And I wrote it as a kind of commentary on what their relationship has been like. So itās actually me looking and going, āThis happened and that happened, then that happened and thatās how you knew you are in love.āā
āIāve never had that, so I wrote that song about things that Lena Dunham has told me about her and Jack Antonoff. Thatās just basically stuff sheās told me. And I think that that kind of relationship ā God, it sounds like it would just be so beautiful ā would also be hard. It would also be mundane at times.ā
āWe first worked on that song together and realized we kind of have a good thing, and the next thing we did was āSweeter Than Fiction,ā which was on the [One Chance] soundtrack, and after that we did āOut of the Woodsā and another song called āYou Are in Love.ā
January 26, 2014: At the Grammy's, Diane Warren reveals that she and Taylor wrote a song together (aka Say, Don't Go).
[Transcript] āI worked with Taylor Swift on a great song. I don't even know what she's done [for her next album], I'm excited about the one that we did, it's pretty cool.ā
[Billboard 2016 Interview] āI know [Swift] likes it, so hopefully it will see the light of day. I know she really likes the song. She didnāt want me to give it away, so hopefully that means she wants it.ā
February 9, 2014: [From the 1989 Booklet] While in London, during the European leg of the Red Tour, Taylor and Imogen Heap write Clean in just 9 hours at Imogen's home studio. Taylor will sing the song just two times.
Voice memo here;
ā'Clean' I wrote as I was walking out of Liberty in London. Someone I used to date ā it hit me that Iād been in the same city as him for two weeks and I hadnāt thought about it. When it did hit me, it was like, āOh, I hope heās doing wellā. And nothing else. And you know how it is when youāre going through heartbreak. A heartbroken person is unlike any other person. Their time moves at a completely different pace than ours. Itās this mental, physical, emotional ache and feeling so conflicted. Nothing distracts you from it. Then time passes, and the more you live your life and create new habits, you get used to not having a text message every morning saying, āHello, beautiful. Good morning.ā You get used to not calling someone at night to tell them how your day was. You replace these old habits with new habits, like texting your friends in a group chat all day, and planning fun dinner parties, and going out on adventures with your girlfriends, and then all of a sudden one day youāre in London and you realize youāve been in the same place as your ex for two weeks and youāre fine. And you hope heās fine. The first thought that came to my mind was ā Iām finally clean.ā
ā'Clean' is the last song on the album for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it felt like the complication of this emotional process Iāve been going through for the last couple of years. You know, I feel like my personal life was really, really discussed, and criticized, and debated, and talked about to a point where it made me feel almost kind of tarnished, in a way. And the discussion wasnāt about music. It broke my heart that I had made an album that I was proud of, and I was touring the world, and playing sold-out stadiums, and still they managed to only want to talk about my personal life. At a certain point I felt a switch and it was at the end of recording this album that I began to feel like my life was mine again and my music was at the forefront again. I was living my life on my own terms and I really no longer cared what people were saying about me. That was when I started so see people talk less about the things that didnāt matter.ā
āI had this metaphor in my head about being in this house, thereās been a drought but you feel like thereās a storm coming. Instead of trying to block out the storm you punch a hole in the roof and just let all the rain come in, and when you wake up in the morning, itās washed away.ā
[Imogen Heap] āWe met at my studio in London. She had the bare bones of āClean.ā She had the lyric, the chorus and the chords. I thought it was brilliant.I was really writing the tiniest amount just to help her do what she does. I put some noises, played various instruments on it, including drums, and anytime she expressed she liked something I was doing, I did it more. It was a really fun day. She recorded all her vocals during that one session. She did two takes, and the second take was it. We always thought she would probably re-record it, because we thought it canāt possibly be that easy. But after we lived with it for a few months, we felt it was great. I knew she loved it. She said she loved it and her mum loved it. But I wasnāt sure it would be included on the album. But everyone felt it had something special. It came together really magically.ā
Imogen's detailed blog entry about this songwriting session.
[Taylor about Imogen Heap] āThe coolest thing about Imogen for me was that there was no one else in the studio. There was no assistant; there was no engineer. It was her doing everything.ā
February 11, 2014: Taylor gets a haircut. (I'm including this for funsies)
February 15, 2014: Taylor, Max Martin and Shellback write Shake It Off.
Voice memo here;
[Lover Journal] LA. This week I've been in the studio with Max and Johan every day and it has been the most creatively successful and fulfilling time. The first day, Johan just made a really up tempo drum beat because we decided we needed something up and light. We worked at it for a few hours before i just started singing "shake it off, shake it off, shake it off" And then the best way i know how to describe it is that the chorus just fell out of the sky. It ended up being this song about doing your own thing even though haters are gonna hate, and you just have to dance to your own beat. We all went home and I wrote the first and second verses and brought them in the next day. We wrote this chanty cheer leader bridge that I absolutely LOVE. We spent all day doing vocals and the next day recording the background vocals. I think it'll end up being the first single and Max said it's his favorite song he's ever been a part of.
[Max Martin during the lawsuit] āShellback started out with a drumbeat. Shellback, Taylor, and I then collaboratively developed the melody and other lines of āShake It Offā to Shellbackās drumbeat. I did not write or provide any input into any lyrics in āShake It Off,ā which were written entirely by Taylor.ā
āI've had every part of my life dissected ā my choices, my actions, my words, my body, my style, my music. When you live your life under that kind of scrutiny, you can either let it break you, or you can get really good at dodging punches. And when one lands, you know how to deal with it. And I guess the way that I deal with it is to shake it off.ā
āThe message in the song is a problem I think we all deal with and an issue we deal with on a daily basis. We donāt live just in a celebrity takedown culture, we live in a takedown culture. People will find anything about you and twist it to where itās weird or wrong or annoying or strange or bad. You have to not only live your life in spite of people who donāt understand you, you have to have more fun than they do.ā
February 19, 2014: Taylor, Max Martin, Shellback and Ali Payami write Style. This is the last song made for the album.
āI loved comparing these timeless visuals with a feeling that never goes out of style. It's basically one of those relationships that's always a bit off. The two people are trying to forget each other. So, it's like, 'All right, I heard you went off with her, and well, I've done that, too.' My previous albums have also been sort of like, 'I was right, you were wrong, you did this, it made me feel like this' ā a righteous sense of right and wrong in a relationship. What happens when you grow up is you realize the rules in a relationship are very blurred and that it gets very complicated very quickly, and there's not a case of who was right or who was wrong.ā
āThis song is about those relationships that are never really done. You always kind of have that person, that one person who you feel might interrupt your wedding and be like, āDonāt do it cause weāre not over yet.'ā
[Guitarist Niklas Ljungfelt]Ā āI played on āStyle,ā a song I started with Ali Payami for ourselves. He was playing it for Max Martin at his studio; Taylor overheard it and loved it. She and Max wrote new lyrics. But I recorded the guitar on it before it was a Taylor song. It was an instrumental. I didnāt have a clue that Taylor would sing on it. The inspiration came from Daft Punk and funky electronic music.ā
1989 is officially done!
[Taylor On Ryan Seacrest] āI'm pretty sure after we finished this one I knew the record was done. Shake It Off and Style were the last two songs to be written for 1989.ā
February 19, 2014: While on tour, Ryan Tedder produces another three versions of Welcome To New York.
[Ryan Tedder interview] āI was in Switzerland on a tour bus, and I did four versions of 'Welcome to New York,' one of which I liked personally more, but the thing about artists is they become very obsessed with the demo. She was in love with the demo so no matter how hard I fought, she brought it back to the demo, so really what you hear is what I did on the first day.ā
March 22, 2014: Billboard reports that Taylor and Ryan Tedder have worked together in LA in January
March 24, 2014: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor moves to New York.
[Lover Journal] So in the last few weeks, I've completely moved into my apartment in Tribeca. That's right, I'm writing this from my new bed in my new place, watching Law and Order with Meredith. Strangely, I've never felt more busy.
May 1, 2014: 1989 Photoshoot.
Behind the scenes photo shared by the photographers Sarah Barlow and her husband Stephen Schofield.
May 29, 2014: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor chooses another photo for the cover, after having a nightmare of the previous one being not enough.
May 30, 2014: Taylor chooses the album cover.
[Lover Journal] Shanghai. So we got to China at around 2pm and I knew it would completely ruin me if I slept when i got to the hotel, so I decided to work out. WHY IS THIS PEN RUNNING OUT?! Just went to my purse and got my pen. So a crazy story unfolded in the last 24 hours. Last night, I had this vivid dream where the photo I'd chosen for the album cover wasn't good enough, intriguing enough, artful enough. it woke me up. I couldn't shake it and it stayed with me all day. Because that nagging feeling I'd been pushing back for weeks was now confirmed in my gut... it wasn't good enough. I went to the venue, mind racing, wandering if I'd have to do an entirely new photo shoot... I got to my dressing room with newer versions of the "cover" I looked at it and felt nothing. The team pulled up this new scanned file of the polaroids we had taken during the shoot. I saw it within 10 seconds. The shot. The cover. It's a polaroid of me sitting against a beige wall with a blue seagull sweatshirt on. You can see my red lips but the photo cuts off my eyes. For some reason unknown to me it's the most intriguing photo i've seen. I think it's the mystery of not seeing my eyes. Maybe it just looks effortlessly cool. The craziest moment came when something caught my eye. The cover photo is photo 13. I kid you not. I played a sold out show in Shanghai tonight and the crowd was amazing. Tomorrow we go to Tokyo, where they'll have the whole ticker tape parade at the airport. Smile and wave...
Mid To Late 2014: Taylor and Jack write Now That We Don't Talk.
[Tumblr Music] "Now That We Don't Talk is one of my favorite songs that was left behind. It was so hard to leave it behind, but I think we wrote it a little bit towards the end of the process, and we couldn't get the production right at the time. But we had tons of time to perfect the production this time, and figure out what we wanted the song to sound like, and I just think it's, I think it's the shortest song I've ever had. I think it packs a punch. I think it really goes in for the short amount of time we have, I think it makes its point."
Conclusive notes
What 1989 represented for Taylor:
āThe 1980s was a very experimental time in pop music. People realized songs didn't have to be this standard drums-guitar-bass-whatever. We can make a song with synths and a drum pad. We can do group vocals for the entire song. We can do so many different things. And I think what you saw happening with music was also happening in our culture, where people were just wearing whatever crazy colors they wanted to, because why not? There just seemed to be this energy about endless opportunities, endless possibilities, endless ways you could live your life. And so with this record, I thought, 'There are no rules to this. I don't need to use the same musicians I've used, or the same band, or the same producers, or the same formula. I can make whatever record I want.'ā
āIn the past, I've written mostly about heartbreak or pain that was caused by someone else and felt by me. On this album, I'm writing about more complex relationships, where the blame is kind of split 50ā50 ... even if you find the right situation relationship-wise, it's always going to be a daily struggle to make it work.ā

Writing of Red Timeline
This post wants to showcase how Red by Taylor Swift came to be, what challenges and discoveries she made while making her fourth album, but most of all how curious, passionate and eager to learn she is.
DISCLAIMER: If you know dates and/or have info about the making of Taylor's songs, please consider sharing them with me, I'd be forever grateful. If you don't want to for whatever reason, I need to kindly ask you to not read this timeline as I believe that every fan is equal and deserves to know the same things about Taylor's songwriting & recording process.
Please, credit me if you take info from this timeline.
Love is gonna be a huge theme in what I write about, just because there are no two similar relationships, there are no two times where you feel love the same way, or hurt the same way, or rejection the same way, or frustration. That at 22 is different than it was at 18 or 19 when I made my last album. As you grow, you change in the way you prcess emotions. I guess that for me that's always gonna be the focal point of my music, and also telling stories of people that I know, telling stories that hit me really hard. And now I have a different approach to this record. I'm getting to work with people that I've always wanted to work with, I'm 22 and I just wanna learn as much as I can, trying to be as much of a sponge as possible. You have to evolve and try new things and change and that's what I've loved to do with this album.
June 16, 2010: The Story Of Us is the last song Taylor writes before having a writer's block that ended 6 months later.
"Thereās a kind of bad that gets so overpowering you canāt even write about it. When you feel pain that is so far past dysfunctional, that leaves you with so many emotions that you canāt filter them down to simple emotions to write about. Thatās when you know you really need to get out."
Late December 2010: Taylor comes up with All Too Well during a Speak Now Tour rehearsal.
[Interview with Pop Dust] The lyric Iām most proud of on the album is from āAll Too Wellā: āAnd you call me up again just to break me like a promise / so casually cruel in the name of being honest.ā That was something I came up with while ranting during a soundcheck. I was just playing these chords over and over onstage and my band joined in and I went on a rant. Those were some of the lines I thought of. I was going through a really hard time then, and my band joined in playing, and one of the first things that I came up with, just, like, spat out, was āAnd you call me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest.ā
[Taylor to Rolling Stone, My Transcript] "The first song that was written was All Too Well, and it was a day when I was just like a broken human walking into rehearsal just feeling terrible about what was going on in my personal life. And I walked in and I remember we had just hired David Cook⦠I think it was his first day meeting me, and I think I ended up just playing four chords over and over again and the band started kicking in, like Amos Heller on bass, and people started playing along with me. I think they could tell I was really going through it. And I just started singing and riffing and sort of ad-libbing this song that basically was All Too Well. And it started with āI walked through the door with you, the air was coldā ā like it literally just was that song, but it had probably seven extra verses. And it included the f-word, and I remember my sound guy was like āHey, I burned a CD of that thing you were doing, in case you want it.ā And I was like āSure!ā
[Brian Mansfield, UsaToday] Chronologically, the album began with All Too Well, a song she wrote almost two years ago with Liz Rose, one of her earliest and most regular co-writers. The song came after a six-month writing drought that followed a particularly toxic relationship.
February 2011: Taylor reworks All Too Well.
[GMA] The song All Too Well was the hardest to write, because it took me a long time to filter through everything that I wanted to put in the song. It started out being probably like a ten-minute song, which you can't put on an album, and I had to filter it down to, like, a story that, that could work in the form of a song, and I called my, my friend and cowriter Liz Rose and I said "come over, we've got to, we've got to filter this down." And it took me a really long time to get it to its final form.
March 1-4, 2011: Taylor edits All Too Well with Liz Rose's help. Taylor left the US on March 5th for the European leg of the tour so the very first days of March are the only possible days in which Taylor and Liz could've met to write.
[CountryDaily] "It's about this relationship that I had and it tells the story of it from start to finish, so it's all these pieces of memories, one by one listed off. It's one of the most vivid pictures that I've ever gotten to paint with a song," she says of the song she co-wrote with Liz Rose. "It's the first song I wrote for the record a year and a half ago. I called her and said, 'I've been working on this song and it's going to be nine minutes long if I finish it the way that it is. You've got to help me edit this down, make it more concise and make it a story that can be told in the form of a song that isn't going to be an hour long because I've written so much.' She came over and we sat down and wrote it and it became one of the songs on the record that displays the most amount of hurt. It starts off with the innocent beginnings and goes all the way down to the bitter end and follows the relationship as it's crashing down, and the hook of it is, I was there. I remember it all too well."
[Liz Rose to Rolling Stone] When we wrote the song, I hadnāt heard from her in awhile. She hadnāt really been writing. I was in Nashville one day, slowly moving the last bits of junk out of my garage so I could move to Dallas. [ā¦] I was in my driveway and my phone rings, and itās Taylor saying, āMan, Iāve got this thing and I really need you to help me with it. Can you write today? What are you doing today?ā [I later] drove over to Taylorās. It was the first song she wrote for that record, I think. She had a story and she wanted to say something specific. She had a lot of information. I just let her go. She already had a melody and she started singing some words, and I started writing things down, saying, āOk, letās use this, letās use that.ā She mentioned a plaid shirt, and I wrote that down in a corner, and when we got to the end, I said, āLetās put the plaid shirt in there.ā That turned into one of the best lines. [ā¦] It was the most emotional, in-depth song weāve ever written.
March 20, 2011: While in her hotel room in Madrid, Taylor writes Better Man.
[Taylor on Amazon Music] Transcript: The song Better Man is one that I originally wrote for the Red album. I remember I was on tour, and I wrote it alone in a hotel room. And I remember standing in front of a mirrorāI think the first thing I thought of was, āI wish it wasnāt 4am, standing in a mirror, saying to myself, 'you knowĀ you had to do it.āĀ That was an actual visual from my life that ended up being the first thing I wrote, and then I expanded outward from there. And it was a song that I really thought belonged on the album and there were just too many songs I loved that I had written in that period of time, so some of them had to be left off. I think I chose All Too Well over Better Man. I think that was what happened. I was either going to put on All Too Well or Better Man, and then I left off Better Man.
[Taylor in May 2011] "I was in Madrid, and I was in my hotel room all day. And I was going through this crazy, emotional thing and I wrote a song about it and it'll probably be on the next record. I'm telling you that. I'll tell you the title afterwards."
Taylor had a tour date in Madrid on the 19th. She spent the time before the show with her backup singer Liz Huett, cutting her hair and overall having an enjoyable day. However, it seems like they unexpectedly stayed an extra day in Madrid, therefore placing the Better Man writing date on the 20th rather than on the day of the show. March 27, 2011: Taylor posts a picture of her guitar, saying āWriting a song all afternoon in my hotel room. Dublin, Irelandā. It's unknown on which songs she was working.
March 2011: Taylor starts writing Begin Again.
[People Country, My Transcript] "This is the last song on the album, which chronicles these relationships that were sweet in the beginning and bitter in the end. When someone criticizes you all the time, if you're a people pleaser like me, you change little things about yourself to make it work. But if you change too many things, you lose who you are. So it's a love song, but it's more about getting back your self-confidence. The first inspiration came when I was on tour in Europe [in early 2011]. I'd been alone for a while and had time to think about my past experiences. But I wrote it in pieces-I'd start and then second-guess myself. I had to sort through my own insecurities. It's a nice way to end the record because it breaks the cycle. It's saying, I'm drawn to the sunlight instead of just the rain."
Taylor breaking down the song:
He didn't like it when I wore high heels -> "One day going to meet friends, I had heels on and thought, I should take those off, but realized, I want to wear them. And we're not together. There's no one to look at me skeptically anymore."
He always said he didn't get this song -> "I love a pop melody and I'm not mad if it's a radio hit. I'd get nothing but Eye rolls from listening to the music I like. It was a big point of contention in that relationship."
Walked in expecting you'd be late -> "If you get used to waiting around, whether in a restaurant or emotionally you know you're in a damaging relationship."
Like a little kid -> "There was something dark and too adult about I what I had experienced You should keep some element of childhood-that wonderment and ability to laugh."
I've been spending the last 8 months / Thinking all love ever does / Is break and burn and end -> "That line flowed right out of me. That's exactly what happened. I don't want to fight with someone all the time. and wonder what's going on, or am I cool enough for you?"
You said you never met one girl who Had as many James Taylor records as you -> "James Taylor reminds me of home, and home reminds me of comfort, and comfort was what I never had in the previous relationship."
But you start to talk about the movies family watches every single Christmas -> "That moment came from real life and it's one of last parts I wrote. When you're in a dark relationship, all you talk bout are problems, so when that conversation happened, I thought, "This is so light and innocent and good I want this.""
May 22, 2011: During a brief interview at the Billboard Music Awards, Taylor says sheās ābeen constantly writing lately.ā
June 11, 2011: Taylor says, during a show in Detroit, that she had written 10 songs, all of them sad.
[New Yorker Interview] "In Detroit, Swift seemed somewhat melancholy. Once in a while, I had the feeling that she was on the verge of bursting into tears. She said that she had recently decided that life is āabout achieving contentment... Youāre not always going to be ridiculously happy.ā She had written about ten songs so far for her next album. Asked to characterize them, she said, āTheyāre sad? If Iām being honest.ā The most recent one, she said, āis about moving on.ā
I think that the songs written were: All Too Well, I Almost Do, The Moment I Knew, and Better Man.
āI Almost Do' is a song I wrote about the conflict that you feel when you want to take someone back, and you want to give it another try, but you know you canāt. And you canāt because you know itās hurt you so deeply that you know that you couldnāt bear to go through that again. So youāre sitting there and wondering where they are and hope that they think about you and that youāre almost picking up the phone call, but you just canāt. I think I needed to write this song in order to not call that person actually. I think that writing the song was what I did instead of picking up the phone.ā
June 17, 2011: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor writes that she's "feeling blissfully happy, especially since I wrote those 2 songs", which she will record after flying back to Nashville after the show in Pittsburgh, PA., on June 19th. One of them may be State Of Grace.
[Taylor, My Transcript] State Of Grace is a song that I wrote at the beginning process of making this album, and I think it helps to define what the rest of the record is about just with one line: there's a line in the song that says "Love is a ruthless game, unless you play it good and right" and that's kinda like a warning. This is gonna happen if you don't play this right, and this is what could happen if you do. As soon as you hear that song, you know that there are two way it could go: you could be good to people or you could not play fair and both the outcomes are reflected on the record.
[On Good Morning America] "I wrote this song about when you first fall in love with someone ā the possibilities, kind of thinking about the different ways that it could go. Itās a really big sound. To me, this sounds like the feeling of falling in love in an epic way."
June 24, 2011: Taylor meets up with Lori McKenna at her house in Boston. They write I Bet You Think About Me.
[Taylor on Amazon Music] "āI Bet You Think About Meā is a song I wrote with Lori McKenna, who is one of my favorite singer-songwriters ever. Iād always wanted to work with her. And I wrote this with her at her house when I was playing Foxboro Stadium on the Speak Now Tour. We wanted this song to be like a comedic, tongue in cheek, funny, not caring what anyone thinks about you sort of break up song, because there are a lot of different types of heartbreak songs on Red. Some of them are very sincere, some of them are very stoic and heartbreaking and sad. We wanted this to be the moment where I was like, āI donāt care about anything.ā And we wanted to make people laugh with it, and we wanted it to be sort of a drinking song, and I think that thatās what it ended up being."
[Lori McKenna Interview] āThat song was about 11 years old,ā she pauses before adding, āWe think.ā Swift happened to be in the Boston area playing two sold-out shows at Gillette Stadium not too far from McKennaās house. On the day of the second show, she visited Mckenna, they ate lunch and then planned to write together. āShe had this little nugget of a song which was āI Bet You Think About Me,ā she knew that was the hook.ā Swift had asked her if she should lean in the folk direction (which they did) and after that, the rest flowed blissfully as McKenna recalls, āI donāt remember anything other than sitting here watching how incredible she is. She knows what she wants to say and when she says the right thing, she remembers it. She didnāt write anything down. There was no recording of the song.ā McKenna was writing the lyrics on her computer but Swift never looked at her screen. āIf the line is right, she knows itās right, and she remembers what it is,ā she says. Later that night, McKenna attended Swiftās show with her kids and when she was backstage, Swift played the song they had written together. āIām like, how is this woman gonna get out there, do a completely choreographed show for 60 thousand people, and sheās singing the song that she just wrote two hours ago,ā McKenna exclaims as she revisits the memory. For her to bring back something that was 10 or 11 years old and be true to a song that she had in her heart that long ago is pretty cool. Itās something that a lot of artists donāt get to do.ā
[From Lori McKenna Twitter] @taylorswift13 came to my house to write 1 day before 2 sold out shows @Gillette. (My neighbors famously called police bc of the security) Still she was as sweet, human, unassuming & TALENTED as any writer who has ever been here.
June 30, 2011:Ā [From MySpace] Lately, I've been writing a LOT. Like, all of a sudden, everything I've wanted to say, express, or just let out for the past several months has just recently become a song. I'm really excited about that. It's a freeing feeling when all of a sudden one day, you're able to verbalize exactly how you feel in a verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus pattern.
July 2011:Ā Around this time, Taylor writes Starlight. Originally, the demo was more country.
This date is mostly based onĀ this Rolling Stone articleĀ where Taylor says she has read a 900-page book about the Kennedys, calledĀ The Kennedy Women, and The Kennedy Heirs, the book on which Taylor is mentioned. She alsoĀ visited JFK's graveĀ on August 3th, and had aĀ Robert Kennedy quoteĀ on her arm during the August 3th show. After reading the Rolling Stone article, Rory Kennedy, Ethel and Bob's daughter, reaches out to Taylor's camp to ask for tickets for the Speak Now tour and Taylor agrees.
[Washington Post] I get a lot of style inspiration from the 1960s, so Iāll go and look at black and white pictures, and look at photos from the ā50s and '60s, and I came across this picture of these two kids dancing at a dance. It immediately made me think of like how much fun they must have had that night. It was back in the late '40s. I ended up reading underneath that it was Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy. And they were, like, 17. So I just kind of wrote that song from that place, not really knowing how they met or anything like that.
Description of theĀ Starlight Studio Demo: "3:37 minutes long. This demo is much rougher sounding than the released version. The verses are acoustic guitar-driven, there are less spacey sounds, and there are much louder background vocals as the song builds."
[The Kennedy Heirs book] In the summer of 2011, upon reading that Taylor was a fan of her motherās, Rory Kennedy reached out to her office to ask for concert tickets for her and her daughters. Swiftās office happily granted the request. After the show, the Kennedys went backstage to meet the pop star. An excited Taylor then told Rory about the song sheād written in honor of her parents.
August 26, 2011: Kuk Harrell tweets that Taylor and Justin Bieber wrote a song together, called Cannonball.
August 31, 2011: Cannonball is reworked. Tom Strahle, one of Justin Bieber's collaborators talked extensively about the song in these lives. Three demos of the songs exist, but only the second has leaked.
Note: This song was meant for Justin Bieber's album Believe, NOT RED.
September 8-9, 2011: [From Lover Journal 1] Taylor writes Red on a plane on her way to Nashville. Taylor and Nathan Chapman record the demo in the evening, at the Pain in the Art Studio.
[From a Lover Journal] "I was suppose to fly to LA after the show in Tacoma WA last night, but after talking to my brother on the phone and missing my mom and my town where I know my way around -- I got homesick and flew back to Nashville instead. It was a long flight but I'm so happy I chose to come home. Mostly because I wrote a song on the plane on the way home called 'Red'. I got in at 6am this morning slept til 10. [...] In the evening, I went to Nathan's studio to record. When I played Red for him, he lost it. He absolutely freaked over the lyrics. I was so happy. As we started recording it, it got more and more awesome with banjo, and this affected vocal part that runs under the chorus going "re - e - ee- e- d". I'd love to have my next album Red. Scott came over because I called him and he was still working at the office. He said the song takes it to the next level. He lost it over this song. My mom loves it too. It's so different than anything we've done. I can't even tell you how alive and worthwhile i feel when I'm writing a new song and I finish it and people like it. It's the most fulfilling feeling, like getting an A+ on your report card. Recording again tomorrow."
[VH1ās Storytellers] "This relationship that I had that was, like, the worst thing ever and the best thing ever at the same time. I was writing this song and I was thinking about correlating the colors to the different feelings I went through. You have the great part of red, like the red emotions that are daring and bold and passion and love and affection. And then you have on the other side of the spectrum, jealousy and anger and frustration and āyou didnāt call me backā and āI need space."
[Billboard Interview] I turned in 20 songs and I had this immediate sinking feeling, this canāt be done, this canāt be it. I think the reason I said that was because I made the record exactly the same way I made the last three. I knew I hadnāt jumped out of my comfort zone, which at the time was writing alone and working with Nathan. āRedā the song was a real turning point for āRedā the album. When I wrote that song my mind started wandering to all the places we could go. If I were to think outside the box enough, go in with different people, I could learn from and have what they do rub off on me as well as have what I do rub off on them.
[Taylor, My Transcript] Red is a song that I wrote halfway through making this album and it changed what this album became.
September 16, 2011: Taylor does an interview with Vogue (published in January 2012) and likely references the problems with her relationship with Jake:
Swift is working on her fourth album: āThereās just been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak,ā she says, āand that will turn out to be what the next album is about. The only way that I can feel better about myselfāpull myself out of that awful pain of losing someoneāis writing songs about it to get some sort of clarity.ā Swiftās music is not exactly straight diary entryāitās cleverer than thatābut somehow the specifics of her past relationships continue to have a universal appeal. When I ask her if she can detail a few things sheās learned along the way, she seems delighted to play along. āI have red flags now,ā she says. 1. āIf someone doesnāt seem to want to get to know me as a person but instead seems to have kind of bought into the whole idea of me and he approves of my Wikipedia page? And falls in love based on zero hours spent with me? Thatās maybe something to be aware of. That will fade fast. You canāt be in love with a Google search.ā 2. āIf a dude is threatened by the fact that I need security, if they make me feel like I am some sort of princessy divaāthatās a bad sign. I donāt have security to make myself look cool, or like I have an entourage. I have security because thereās a file of stalkers who want to take me home and chain me to a pipe in their basement.ā 3. āIf you need to put me down a lot in order to level the playing field or something? If you are threatened by some part of what I do and want to cut me down to size in order to make it even? That wonāt work either.ā 4. āAlso, I canāt deal with someone whoās obsessed with privacy. People kind of care if there are two famous people dating. But no one caresĀ thatĀ much. If you care about privacy to the point where we need to dig a tunnel under this restaurant so that we can leave? I canāt do that.ā
September/October 2011: Around this time, Taylor re-records the vocals to Red and her and Nathan Chapman tweak the song due to Borchetta being unstatisfied, before calling Dann Huff to co-produce it.
[Scott Borchetta Interview] āThe song [Red] was brilliantāgreat melody. But I told them that the way it was recorded, guys, the production just doesnāt match the song. It needs a pop sound.ā So Chapman and Swift asked Borchetta if they could take another crack at it. They did and it was worse than the first pass. āAnd Taylor basically said, āAll right, would you call Max [Martin]?'ā
[Dann Huff] [My Transcript and Adaptation] The label or Taylor (whatever it was, I wasn't in the political sphere of that), they didn't feel like [the song Red] was happening, so they said, "We'd like Dann to do his take on it". [Nathan] gave me the vocal, and because the vocal was a good vocal, I kind of I just said, "Do you want me to do what I would do?". They said yes, so I cut it once. The song is really a long song, I think it still is, but it was longer so I just suggested to edit some things out and Taylor was cool with it. When I finished it I thought, "God this is a snoozer!" and so I recut the drums twice, I just added drums with Aaron Sterling, he was living on the West Coast at that time and he just happened to be in town for one more day. I didn't want to lose the first drum pass, because I thought it was great up to maybe two minutes, so I said, "Can we just add it another drum part?", and he said, "Yeah, great!". It was in the same studio, same everything and that was it.
[Dann Huff] [My Transcript] I think that [Red] was kind of in her transition era, and [the label wasn't] roping that. And so I think she'd already done the vocals and Scott Borchetta said, "I don't think she's gonna come in and re-sing it. I think you're gonna have to use that, but could you recut the track?" It was a little bit bizarre but it happens to all of us. This is tough thing, and it just happened to me just recently too. Sometimes you don't get it, you know, and the label and the artists really think that that this song is the deal. They gotta get it done. And sometimes you look at it like if you look at a painting too close. That's how it is to you. Her producer at that time was Nathan Chapman, this guy is genius-level. I think he's one of the best that we got here in Nashville, and he's one of the best people I know too. So it was a tough one for Nate, but he was so pro about it, so cool. He just sent me over the vocal and said, "Have a go at this thing, man. I'm looking at it and it's too close for me." And so I took it. I had a different take on it. [I worked mostly] on the voice that had been recorded. It was a while back, so I can't remember if I redid the harmony vocals or what. I remember that she came over to the house wanting to re-sing a couple of lines that I wanted to try. And that was that was basically it. She's great. I mean, she's Taylor Swift.
October 4, 2011:Ā Taylor writes Sad Beautiful Tragic on her ukulele, while on her tour bus, while reminiscing about a relationship that had ended months ago. (credits for the find: @likeadevils)
[From Twitter] "Leaving Little Rock, headed to New Orleans. Writing a song on a moving bus."
[Billboard Interview] "āSad Beautiful Tragicā is really close to my heart. I remember it was after a show and I was on the bus thinking about this relationship that ended months and months before. The feeling wasnāt sadness and anger or those things anymore. It was wistful loss. And so I just got my guitar and I hit on the fact that I was thinking in terms of rhyming; I rhymed magic with tragic, changed a few things and ended it with what a sad beautiful tragic love affair. I wanted to tell the story in terms of a cloudy recollection of what went wrong. Itās kind of the murky gray, looking back on something you canāt change or get back."
[Track By Track] Sad Beautiful TragicĀ is a song that I wrote while I was on tour. I was on a tour bus that was moving and I just started playing this really haunting, sad chorus, and it was very simple, āWhat a sad, beautiful, tragic love affair.ā It was just reflecting on something that was lost and you canāt get it back. I went home and I calledĀ Nathan ChapmanĀ and said, āHey, I wrote a song. Please, please, please, can we record today?ā and, of course he said yes and we used that original demo on the album, because it just kind of came across so pure and raw.
Speculation:
The secrete message is āWhile you were on a trainā and it might be a reference to Jake GyllenhaalĀ joining Mumford & SonsĀ in late April on their Railroad Revival Tour⦠on an actual train.
October 19, 2011: "I have written 25 songs so far."
Some of these 25 songs might include: State Of Grace, Red, All Too Well, I Almost Do, Stay Stay Stay, Sad Beautiful Tragic, The Moment I Knew, Better Man. All of them are solo written and produced only by Chapman, which resembles the process of Speak Now.
"The song āStay Stay Stayā is a song that I wrote based on what Iāve seen of real relationships, where itās not perfect, there are moments where youāre just so sick of that person, you get into a stupid fight. Itās still worth it to stay in it. Thereās something about it that you canāt live without. In the bridge it says, āIād like to hang out with you for my whole lifeā and I think thatās what probably the key to finding the one, you just want to hang out with them forever."
I think that Stay Stay Stay was written in January 2010 and reworked in the summer of 2011 with State Of Grace. My theory here.
October 21, 2011: Maya Thompson, Ronan's mother, is invited by Taylor to her concert in Glendale, AZ. She tells Maya that she has just written a song about her son Ronan.
[From Maya's blog, Rockstar Ronan] "My calmness soon turned to complete and utter frozen shock when these words came out of her mouth. 'I wrote a song for Ronan.'" Thompson added, addressing her late son, "'The tears started pouring down my cheeks as soon as I heard her say those words. But her words didn't stop there. Not only did she write a song for you, but she wanted to know if it would be alright to perform it on the nationally televised show.
October 2011: Taylor writes Eyes Open. This song was never intented for Red. During the Safe & Sound MV premiere, Taylor confirmes that Eyes Open was the first song made for the Hunger Games.
[MTV, My Transcript] I wrote [Safe & Sound] with and the Civil War and we all happened to be in the same studio. I was working with T Bone Burnett a lot on the soundtrack, just putting songs together. There's another song on the soundtrack that I did for it, so we were working on that song, and he said, "Do you think it would be good to call the Civil Wars and see if they want to come write?"
I wrote it about Katnissā relationship with the Capitol. It basically serves as a warning for her not to trust anyone, in many ways it is the opposite of āSafe & Sound.'
November 9, 2011: During her award acceptance speech at the CMAs, Taylor says that she's recording demos: "The reason I obsess over [performing songs] so much is that I obsess over writing them so much⦠With this next album, I'm so excited because I've been writing so much. We're still in the first gear of making it, so as we finish songs and demo them in my producer's basement, I can picture them being played on the stage."
November 19, 2011: Taylor writes Safe & Sound with The Civil Wars (Joy Williams & John Paul White) and T Bone Burnett at Burnett's house in LA.
[Rolling Stone] The Civil Wars had a show that night in L.A., so they raced right over to T-Bone's house. There's so many things he could've done production-wise to make that song bigger sonically than it is, but I think that would have possibly been a mistake. For him to have left the song as a lullaby is brilliant.
We had this idea that we wanted the song to be about the empathy that goes into this film. And the undertones of like, sympathy and human compassion that go along with such an incredible film with all this action and fighting in it. We wanted to highlight the fact that there's a lot of heart beneath all that.
The Civil Wars post these two photos from the session on Instagram:
December 1, 2011: Taylor cuts her bangs and straightens her hair for the Vogue Magazine photoshoot.
December 2011: Taylor finishes Begin Again.
āBegin Again is a song that I wrote about getting through a breakup, and still being sad about it, and feeling a little insecure about all the things that relationship made you feel are wrong with yourself. And after months, and months, and months, having the courage to stand back up, dust yourself off, and go on that first date. And itās about, kind of, the vulnerability involved with that, and the idea that you realize that, 'wow, this could be great.ā
The song is supposedly for Will Anderson from Parachute. On November 27th, they were photographed togetherĀ eight months after Taylor had broken up with Jake for good.Ā Additionally, the white dress she wears on the single cover is the same one she wore atĀ his birthday party on May 5, 2012.
December 13, 2011: Taylor turns 22. She's at the Blackbird Studios to record, wearing a pair of bright red shoes. She's probably there for Red and Begin Again which have the same credits.
Late December 2011: Taylor reworks Starlight. While Red and Begin Again have the same credits, Starlight has others mixers, musicians and so on. My guess is that Dann Huff was called to work on Red because Borchetta didn't like the two demos, then he worked on Begin Again, likely on the same session as Red, and shortly after on Starlight. I bet that the guitar in the Starlight Demo was played by Chapman because in the Starlight credits you see "Electric Guitar Solo - Conceived by Nathan Chapman, Played by Dann Huff", which I think confirms Huff's involvement at a later date. I think after this recording session Borchetta was satisfied and wanted to wrap up the album.
December 2011/January 2012: Taylor writes Girl At Home. This song is a demo. For my own sanity, I'm gonna assume that this pic shared by Nathan Chapman in 2024 is from the Girl At Home session. This date is solely based on the fact that on the US Copyright Registry, it's credited as being written in 2012. This picture could also be them working on Better Man, since the Original File that leaked in October 2021 has January 13th as its exportation date. Please note that it might not be correct.
January 19 & 21, 2012: Taylor meets Rory and Ethel Kennedy, at the Sundance Film Festival, where a documentary about Ethel Kennedy premiered. Taylor and Ethel had firstly met around November 2011. At the Sundance, Taylor reveals that she has written a song about the Kennedys (aka Starlight).
[Vogue Interview] āWhen asked how the odd-couple friendship came to be, Swift said her acquaintance with the daughter led to an introduction to the mother. āI had read up on Robert F. Kennedy and his wife, and I asked Rory if it would ever be possible for me to meet her mother. She said, āHereās her number.ā Ethel was kind enough to have lunch and spend a few hours talking with me, and ever since then Iāve been so inspired by how full of life she is and the way she tells her story.āā
January 2012: āWith Red, [Scott Borchetta] came to me in January and said, 'I think the album's finished.' This time, I said, 'No, it's not -- I need to keep writing.' At that point, she went to Chapman and told him she wanted to work with other producers, too.ā
This secret sessioner who was at the Red Announcement Session in August 2012, reported that Scott Swift said: "She basically had a new album done by January. This album is about a relationship from the beginning to end."
January 2012:Ā Shortly after hiring Max Martin and Shellback, Taylor starts writing a sad piano ballad called 'Trouble', that will becomeĀ I Knew You Were Trouble. She emails Max Martin about it, but they have to put the song on hold for 6 months.
February 7, 2012: During the Lorax press Conference, Taylor says to ExtraTV that she has written around 30 songs.
February 1-17, 2012: [From a Lover Journal] Somewhere between February 1st and February 17th, Taylor writes Holy Ground.
āThe song āHoly Groundā was a song that I wrote about the feeling I got after years had gone by and I finally appreciated a past relationship for what it was, rather than being bitter about what it didnāt end up being. And I was sitting there thinking about it after Iād just seen him and I just, I was just like, āYou know what, that was good.ā It was, it was good, having that in my life, and I wrote the song and I immediately heard Jeff Bhaskerās production. I hadnāt ever worked with Jeff, but he has done some amazing work. I love what heās done on Funās record, and I love his diversity. Heās just so talented, and so I called him and I said āI wrote this song. I really want you to work on it with me.ā And I played it for him and he was like, āLetās go! This is great!ā And, and he did such an amazing job on it.ā
February 17, 2012: Jeff Bhasker and recording engineer Tyler Johnson, approach guitar player Anders Mouridsen at a show in Los Angeles, asking him to play on Holy Ground.
February 2012:Ā While Taylor is in LA promoting the Lorax, she and Pat Mohanan from the band Train team up to writeĀ Babe. This is speculation, but it's mostly based onĀ Train's timelineĀ for their albumĀ California 37.
[Pat Monahan, 2013] āWhen [Pat] told Taylor that he wanted to collaborate with her on a song for Train's next album, she asked him to write a song with her for her album, Red. "It's a song called 'Babe,'" continues Pat. "So it's her song; I was just lucky enough to be a part of it with her, and I'm gonna ask the same of her in the future. She's very talented, she's a no-nonsense young kid. I'm not going through different relationships and breakups and all the stuff that young people do, so her perspective is very fresh," he says. "And I think that that's what I admire the most [about her].ā
Scott Borchetta mentioned the song on September 24, 2012.
Babe was copyrighted in January 2013.
February 2012: This is rampant speculation but Espionage, who co-wrote The Very First Night, know Pat Monahan very well, since they wrote a few songs for Train, including their then-latest single Drive By. So I think that it's possible that The Very First Night was also written in February.
[Taylor on Amazon Music] ā'The Very First Night' is a song that I made with a production group called Espionage, and they're so cool, so talented. This is actually the first time anybody gets to hear the work we did together because this didn't end up on the album, even though I loved it so much and told myself that someday it would come out. It's a song about a common theme on the RED album, which is reminiscing. Reminiscing about something that's over now, and reminiscing about the good times, and how powerful memories can be.ā
March 2, 2012: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor writes Nothing New. While still in Australia, she also writes The Lucky One. They have similar themes and were allegedly inspired by Joni Mitchell and Kim Wilde.
āThe song 'Nothing New' is a song that I wrote when I was 22 and tour. I was on the New Zealand/Australia leg of a tour, I wrote a little bit in each of those places. It was during a phase of my career when I was on my fourth album, and even though I was only 22 I just felt like old news, I really did. I think that new artists don't realize that when they put out their first or second album that they're in this shiny, new phase where everything you do is interesting and exciting to people. And it's only when you get to the moment after your breakthrough where you realize that you're gonna have to figure out some other shade of yourself to show people. Because people are not responding the same way they did when you were brand new. And I think I was writing from that place, even though I was a very young person in terms of years. Being on my fourth album I felt like, 'Is anybody still interested? Are they even excited by what I do anymore? What happens to me after they're not anymore? What do I do then?' Because you get so attached to the idea of novelty.ā
āThe āLucky Oneā is a song I wrote while I was inĀ Australia. Ā It kind of talks about some of my fears through telling the story of other people that I was inspired by. Ā More than their stories being told, Iām pretty much singing about what Iām scared of in that song, ending up kind of caught up in this whole thing and lonely and feeling misunderstood and feeling like when people think youāre lucky that youāre really not. Ā It kind of expresses my greatest fear of having this not end up being fun anymore, having it end up being a scary place. Some people get there, some people end up there. Itās a story song and itās something Iām really proud of because it kind of goes to a place that Iām terrified of. [...] Thereās the microscope thatās always on you. The camera flashes, the fear that something you say will be taken the wrong way and youāll let your fans down. Youāre scared of a lot of things for a lot of the time, but the trade-off of being able to get on a big stage and sing your songs ā itās worth it.ā
March 18, 2012: End of the Speak Now Tour.
"Before the tour wrapped in March [2012], Swift already had an album's worth of material in the can. Only about half those recordings made the final version ofĀ Red." (X)
Last week of March 2012: Taylor confirms that she was in the studio the previous week. Possibilities include: Recording The Lucky One and Nothing New, or working with Espionage on The Very First Night.
April 1, 2012: The Business Inquirer publishes this interview done in March, which contains a line from Message In A Bottle.
When you meet someone that youāre attracted to, do you go, āHereās a songā? That can happen. I get inspired by the smallest or the biggest things. You meet someone and you wonder if youāll ever see them again. I could write so many songs about that. I have written so many songs about that. Wait till you hear my next record, itās all about that.
April 11, 2012: Taylor has a writing session in LA with Dan Wilson. The first song they write is Treacherous. Taylor posts a picture on Instagram with the caption "Recording for the next album. So happy."
They are at Dan Wilson's house, recording the demo for Treacherous, the only song where Taylor has a guitar credit.
[Taste Of Country] āI wrote āTreacherousā with Dan Wilson, and we came up with a way to say, you know, āThis is dangerous and I realize that I might get hurt if I go through with this, if I move forward with you. But⦠but I want to.ā You know? Itās like that kind of conflicted feeling of it being a risk every time you fall in love ā especially with certain types of people. [Laughs] That was a song that Iām really proud of, because itās got this bridge that sounds like a second chorus. Itās got all these big vocals, and itās kind of the intensity of that moment when youāre deciding to let yourself fall in love with someone.ā
[From a Dan Wilson Interview] āWith Taylor, we had been kind of circling around, very much aware of each otherās work for a while. We figured out these two days to work together and she came to my studio super excited and said, āI had an idea in the car.ā And she sang me the first three or four lines of it and said, āI want to call it āTreacherousā and maybe the chorus can go like this.ā And we were writing the song in 10 minutes and she was just so full of excitement.ā
The drums are credited to Wilson in the Treacherous Demo, not to Aaron Sterling like in the final version.
April 12, 2012: Taylor and Dan Wilson write and Come Back... Be Here.
[Red Release Party] āItās a song I wrote about this guy that I met. You know, you meet someone and then they just kinda happen to go away and itās, like, long distance all of a sudden. And youāre, like, āb-b-but, but, come back, be here!ā So itās a song that I wrote about having distance separate you, which is something I face constantly.ā
A description of Come Back... Be Here Studio Demo (not in circulation): "3:55 minutes long. A gorgeous bare-bones studio demo with drums, acoustic guitar, and Taylor's rough vocals with a few pretty harmonies added." I bet this demo was recorded like the Treacherous one, just Taylor and Dan.
April 22, 2012: Taylor meets Max Martin and Shellback. The first song they write is Message In A Bottle. Before starting the session, a friend of an ex walks in the studio asking if Taylor and his friend were getting back together. Taylor goes on a rant about how she'll never get back together with her ex.
Taylor also tweets: "Mon Apr 23 01:21:26 AM: Sitting in my kitchen. Listening to music. Don't want to go to bed. Was in the studio tonight. Writing tomorrow. Should go to bed. Ok I will."
[Taylor for Amazon Music] ā'Message In A Bottle' is such a fun song! It is so catchy and the melody is really contagious. Max Martin, Shellback and I...that was the first song we ever wrote together. We went on to write songs like 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,' 'I Knew You Were Trouble.' and '22' and we felt like those songs really represented what we were doing on RED. We kept saying that somewhere down the line we'd put out 'Message In A Bottle' because we loved it so much and this is the first opportunity that we have to show it to the world. We're all really excited about it!ā
Speculation:
"It is not confirmed but the friend of the ex seems to be Adam Levine from Maroon 5, a very old friend of Jake. Maroon 5 were in the same studio in LA (Conway Studios) to wrap up their album Overexposed.
April 23, 2012: Taylor, Max Martin and Shellback write We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.
āI came in and they played a track that they had made in preparation for this. And I wrote something over the track. And then I think after that, I was telling them a story about what I was going through. And then I started just kind of singing, āWe are never ever everāā¦and Max was like, āThat's great! We're writing that. Like we've got to write that!ā And then Johan was like, āAnd we-eee could be like little kids on a playground!ā And that was the first time that I realized these people think in a way that is so mystical and magical, and the way that you could hear a hook that's not really musical notes. It's a sound, or these kind of pop wizards. I remember being so challenged by writing with them.ā
āItās a definitive portrait of how I felt when I finally stopped caring what my ex thought of me. He made me feel like I wasnāt as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to⦠So I made a song that I knew would absolutely drive him crazy when he heard it on the radio. Not only would it hopefully be played a lot, so that heād have to hear it, but itās the opposite of the kind of music that he was trying to make me feel inferior to.ā
[Max Martin Interview, transcribed & adapted by me] āMe and Johan [Shellback] had our first date with her at Conway Studios. I was a little nervous, you know, the good kind of nervous. Maroon 5 was recording in the studio next door. This guy shows up, a friend of theirs. We literally haven't started the session yet. The guy says, "I heard the Taylor Swift's here. I gotta say hello". I was like, "Really?" and the guy says, "I totally know her, it's fine, we're friends". He walks in and it turns out that he didn't know her. And I started sweating cause I was vouching for that guy. He started talking about some ex-boyfriend of hers. It was really messy. He leaves and I apologize, but she was super cool, no problem at all. Then I asked what that was all about and she told me the story about this guy that she was dating. I can't remember exactly what she said, but she said, "One thing's for sure, we are never ever getting back together", and I said, "That's pretty harsh". She said, "No no, we are never ever ever getting back together". And we're laughing about it, saying, "That sounds like a song title". Then we started on something else [Message In A Bottle]. The next day, she said, "I thought about what you said", and she played us this idea that became 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together'. I was so mad at that guy who ruined our session, but it turned into love, cause it never would've happened if he hadn't walked in.ā
May 9, 2012: Taylor, Sarah Barlow and her husband Stephen Schofield shoot the Red Photoshoot, inspired by one of Liz Huett's photoshoots.
[Sarah Barlow Interview]Ā Taylor is a mutual friend of ours. Stephen and his brother were friends with her years before, and I became friends with her separately. What ended up happening was one of her background singers needed headshots. When Taylor saw them a few months later, she came to me and was like, āLiz showed me the shots you took of her, and I need my album to look exactly like that.ā Clearly, this was a no-brainer. I said, āOK!ā Before then, Iād been kind of burned out on music photography. A lot of the shoots were super controlling. I needed a new perspective on the field itself and wanted future shoots to be very free-flowing ā just the artist and a minimum crew. Luckily for Stephen and me, thatās exactly how Taylor presented theĀ RedĀ album shoot. So it was just the three of us shooting everything together. She wanted everybody else to remain off set, allowing for a more personal and intimate experience.
May 15, 2012: Taylor meets Ed Sheeran for the first time, after his concert in Phoenix, Arizona, at the Ritz Hotel: they write Run, their first song ever.
"I met up with him at one of his shows and we wrote some songs that day."
[Taylor on Amazon Music] āThe song āRunā is really special to me because it marks the first song that I ever wrote with Ed Sheeran and it kind of also marks the first day of our friendship. Heās been someone who has been so important in my life, like just one of my closest friends, heās always been there for me. Itās a song about the escapism of falling in love and how you donāt really care what anyone else says when you feel this way ā you just wanna run away with someone. And all the little secrets that you establish with this person, this secret world you create together.ā
[Ed Sheeran Interview] āWe wrote 'Run' and then we wrote 'Everything Has Changed' maybe like a week later. And I remember always thinking, 'Well, 'Run' is the one thatās gonna make the album.' It was always my favorite. But 'Everything Has Changed' just ended up sounding better because we produced them differently or whatever. So 'Run' has just been there for years and years. Iāve never really wanted to nudge Taylor about it ā because itās her song. But Iāve always been secretly hoping that one day sheād be like, 'Hey, this song was cool!' And so we recorded that and itās really great! Iām so happy itās seeing the light of day.ā
It looks like they wrote another unfinished song that day, according to this Ed Sheeran interview: "We went in a hotel room, had some burgers, had a guitar and we wrote this Run song and I think like part of another song."
They both tweet about Run:
May 17, 2012: Taylor has lunch with Mark Foster from Foster The People in Beverly Hills, CA. They write Forever Winter.
[Mark Foster Interview] āWe wrote a song that day. Itās a really cool song. We kind of just went into it casually and something really cool came out of it. Weāll see what happens with it. Sheās been writing a lot for her next record.ā
[Taylor on Amazon Music] āThe song 'Forever Winter' is about being in a moment in your life where you love someone, or someone is such a good friend of yours, or you feel really close to someone, and you realize all at once that they've been struggling for a very long time. And you feel so guilty that you didn't see it sooner, and you wish you would've checked in on them more. That person means so much to you, but you didn't necessarily pick up on the signs that maybe they weren't okay. So, that's 'Forever Winter'.ā
May 18, 2012: Aaron Sterling tweets that he had recently played drums in Treacherous and Come Back... Be Here.
In November 2012, Dan Wilson confirms that the songs were recorded a few weeks after being written.
May 24, 2012: Taylor records a voice memo of the chorus to Everything Has Changed, while she's in the car with her friend Claire Winter.
May 27, 2012: Taylor and Ed finish Everything Has Changed.
Original lyrics: "All I feel in my stomach is butterflies for a Gemini / whoād never tell a lie / The beautiful kind saying āThis feels right" / Making me feel like falling for a Gemini / This feels right / Making me feel like I just want to know you better, grow old together, hold you forever / When you caught my eye / The look said youād missed me all this time / Meet me there tonight / So I can know that itās not all in my mind."
[MTV News] "We, for real, were sitting on my trampoline in my backyard 'cause we had been writing a song and I was like, āHey, I just got a trampoline. You want to see it?ā And so, he brought the guitar for some reason. We ended up writing an entire song out there. For portions of the song, we were bouncing around, ācause itās a trampoline and itās fun, and the combined maturity level of both of us is 8 years."
[Ed Sheeran Interview] "She pretty much had the verse, bridge and chorus done but we argued about that one chord. She didnāt like that but I forced it upon her!"
May 28, 2012: Taylor and Ed arrive in Santa Monica, CA. They start recording Everything Has Changed and Run at Ruby Red Productions with Butch Walker and Jake Sinclair.
[Butch Walker Interview] We did [Everything Has Changed] in my studio and of course, a lot of the way I work is Iāll be building a track quickly to put the song together, whether itās a demo or a final recording. Itās usually āto be determined,ā but I try to make it sound as much as I want it to in my head and like a record from the get-go, and that was essentially just the raw version of the demo that I did. I would go back in and spruce things up and replace sounds with other things, but she felt like the magic was in the initial recording, which I respected and loved her for that. So thatās the version thatās on the first record.
May 29, 2012: Gary Lightbody joins Taylor in the studio thanks to Ed. The two of them plus Jacknife Lee write and record The Last Time in less than 9 hours, produced by Lee in his studio in Topanga, CA. The album version is the very first attempt. Gary will also provide background vocals for Everything Has Changed.
[Taylor to NPR] The idea was based on this experience I had with someone who was kind of this unreliable guy. You never know when heās going to leave, you never know when heās going to come back, but he always does come back. My visual for this song is, thereās a guy on his knees sitting on the ground outside of a door. And on the other side of the door is his girlfriend, who he keeps on leaving ā and he keeps coming back to her, but then he leaves again. Heās saying, āThis is the last time Iām going to do this to you.ā And sheās saying, āThis is the last time Iām asking you this: Donāt do this again.ā And sheās wondering whether to let him in, and he just wants her to give him another chance, but she doesnāt know if heās going to break her heart again. Itās a really fragile emotion youāre dealing with when you want to love someone, but you donāt know if itās smart to.
[Gary Lightbody to Rolling Stone] It was so fast. She works really fast. Sheās extraordinary. We actually did that song, wrote it and recorded it in a day. And that was the version of it on the record, which is very rare. Normally you write and record something with somebody and then down the line theyāll record it, if youāre lucky. With her, the whole thing was done in nine hours. I hope we can do it again sometime!
[Jacknife Lee Interview] āWe met through Garyās [Lightbody] friendship with Ed Sheeran. Taylor was a fan of Edās. They were on tour I think. Taylor came to Topanga. Body guards, big black car. We wrote a song in a couple of hours and sang it sitting on the sofa. She had a handheld microphone. Then we had pasta for dinner and hung around with my kids. She left and I finished the song off. Owen Pallett [Arcade Fire/Final Fantasy] did some strings very quickly. It was out of my field of expertise and interest, but I was intrigued and my girls were thrilled. Taylor was nice and very professional. She knew what she wanted and there was no fucking about.ā
May 30, 2012: Taylor is back in Nashville to shoot the Both Of Us Music Video and visits Scott Borchetta, who tweets: "She is writing like crazy... I know it's hard to wait but I promise it will be worth it..."
June 1, 2012: [From a Lover Journal] After the Walmart Shareholders Concert held in Arkansas, Taylor returns to LA and while on the plane she writes 22, which she brings to a writing session with Max Martin and Shellback.
[Interview with Ryan Seacrest] "I wrote that about my friends, like finally Iāve got this amazing group of girlfriends and we tell each other everything, weāre together all the time. And I think that was kind of the marker of me being 22, like having all these friends and thereās all these question marks in your life, but the one thing that you have is that you have each other."
"For me, being 22 has been my favorite year of my life. I like all the possibilities of how you're still learning, but you know enough. You still know nothing, but you know that you know nothing. You're old enough to start planning your life, but you're young enough to know there are so many unanswered questions. That brings about a carefree feeling that is sort of based on indecision and fear and a the same time letting lose. Being 22 has taught me so much."
"'22' is a song I wrote about exactly how I was feeling when I was 22 years old; I felt happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time, which I think is the way a lot of 22-year-olds feel, you know? We all feel that way all the time. So I brought this song to Max Martin and Shellback, and I had written in on a plane ride and they loved the idea. And it just happened really fast! They were like, 'Oh my God, we get exactly where you wanna go with this.' I just wanted the most infectuous chorus and I feel it really does that."
The song originally had a different bridge that can be seen in the handwritten lyrics:
Sometimes it hits me / Weāre moving quickly / Toward something hazy / A future I canāt see / Letās break the old rules / While weāre still 22 / You look like bad news / I gotta have you
June 2, 2012: [From a Lover Journal] Taylor brings the chorus of I Knew You Were Trouble to Max Martin e Shellback. Both 22 and I Knew You Were Trouble are recorded during this week.
[MTV Interview] "Itās about knowing the second you see someone like, āOh, this is going to be interesting. Itās going to be dangerous, but look at me going in there anyway.' I think that for me, it was the first time I ever kind of noticed that in myself, like when you are curious about something you know might be bad for you, but you know that you are going to go for it anyway because if you donāt, youāll have greater regrets about not seeing where that would go."
[Taylor on Amazon Music] "'I Knew You Were Trouble.' is a song that I think really made me expand my horizon of what kind of music I wanted to make, and what kind of music I was allowed to make. At this point in my career I was a completely straight forward country artist that sort of toyed around with pop melodies every once in a while. But when I had gotten this idea, I brought it to Shellback and Max Martin. It was a piano ballad and I thought it was just gonna be a really sad, down tempo song. And I remember Shellback going, 'What if we do like a dubstep bass drop?' And I was like, 'Um, yeah! Let's do that.' It was one of the most shocking moments that we had in the studio, making RED. I think the whole time we were making the song we were all like, 'Can we really do this?' And I love moments like that! Because that means you're pushing boundaries, you're going for it. I've learned that since. I felt that when I was making folklore like, 'Am I allowed to make an alternative album?' You just gotta listen to that feeling sometimes."
[Taylor to Rolling Stone] "I remember bringing in this slow, sad thing that I had written, called āI Knew You Were Trouble.ā I had originally called it āTroubleā. I was like, āI don't know if we could have some kind of intense bass drop or something, like dubstep is really awesomeā¦ā And they were just like, āYes, absolutely!ā And then Shellback was like, āIn the verse, let's do this really frantic drum beat.ā And it just was something I would never have thought of; to make the beat of the verse really up-tempo, and then make the intensity drop off the chorus, and then have it build back up, and then have a production explosion at the end of the chorus. It was so thrilling! I couldn't believe the song started where it started and then their added ideas with production. They ended up seeping into my brain and I started thinking the way that I would hope they would think. I would write a verse and Max would be like, āThis is this many syllables, can you shorten it and make it more succinct, but convey the same message?ā And I would just go off into a corner and I felt like I had like this amazing assignment. So the challenge of it was so thrilling for me."
August 11, 2012: Taylor Nation posts this picture of Taylor working at the Blackbird Studios in Nashville.
Billboard shared also this picture of Taylor, which judging from the Red wall, was also taken at the Blackbird:
Somewhere around August 2012: Taylor records State Of Grace Acoustic.
[Taylor to Yahoo!] This one wasn't a demo, but a careful afterthought. When I wanted to do an alternate version of it for the Target bonus tracks, Nathan (Chapman) and I went back into the studio and we did just a completely acoustic version of it. It's really sweet and slowed down and it completely changes the song.
September 22, 2012: Scott Borchetta reveals the collaborators Taylor worked with on Red: "Max Martin and Shellback on "Never Ever" as well as Jackknife Lee (U2, R.E.M.), Train's Pat Monahan, UK singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, producer Jeff Bhasker (fun.'s "We Are Young") and Semisonic's Dan Wilson (Adele's "Someone Like You"), as well as continued work with longtime producer Nathan Chapman and a first-time team-up with Nashville mainstay Dann Huff, who pitched in for a few songs and re-worked "Never Ever" for country radio."
September 30, 2012: Taylor sends Ed the final version of Eveything Has Changed.
[Ed] I remember when I did a song with her for her album, I was in San Francisco and they sent someone with a locked briefcase with an iPad and one song on it, and they flew to San Francisco and played the song Iāve done with her. And they asked if I like it, and I was like, āYeah,ā and then they took it back. Thatās how I hear it.
Somewhere during the writing process: Unknown Song with Ryan Adams, Unknown Song with T-Pain (I can't find the source), Unknown Song written in New Zealand (mid-March 2012, mentioned by herself on Amazon Music).
2012: Somewhere in 2012, Taylor called Harry Styles to ask him to write a few bombastic songs with her, as requested by the label, as Jacknife Lee revealed. From the ambigous way Lee phrased it, there's no way of understanding the exact period of time.
[Jacknife Lee Interview] āShe was seeing Harry Styles at the time, so he came to Topanga on her recommendation. She wrote a few songs with him, and it was the same thing ā quick. But this time it was more directed by the management and label. They were after something specific. I wanted more acoustic and gentle, almost Americana, and they wanted bombast. They got what they wanted, and that was the extent of my foray into teen-pop territory. It was fun.ā
Other Songs: Both Of Us, Safe & Sound, Eyes Open, they were all written and recorded in 2011. None of them were meant for Red.
End of the writing process: "The singer also revealed that she wrote "30 to 35?" songs for the album and but whittled it down to 16 tracks."
