When I wake up in the morning and start my day, I think of kiddos like these. I think of their families. And I think about the battle they face every single day. When things get hard and I feel like giving up, I remember what these beautiful kids have to go through and I pause and become thankful for all I have. Cancer sucks. Everyone knows it. Pediatric cancer though, is such a different kind of story. As a volunteer at my local hospital with the child life unit and as the ambassador for the Pinky Swear foundation, I know what it's like to walk in to a room to see a three or four year old crying and shaking from pain from his/her sickness. I remember seeing this for the first time and what the family's faces looked like. The mother was sitting in his small bed with her son in her arms and her cheek resting on his bald head while he cried out in pain. She looked unbearably defeated. This moment made me realize that there shouldn't be a single shred of thought about how she can pay for her families next meal, or if they will be able to pay their next bill. The only thing that needs to be on her mind is her son. And getting him better. This is my inspiration to walk through life with a smile on my face and thankfulness in my heart knowing that God has made me and my family healthy. This is my inspiration to work tirelessly as Kelly Koch, as Miss Iowa, and as the Pinky Swear National ambassador to make sure that not one family in America has to file for bankruptcy when their child has cancer. This is my inspiration to change lives and to become the foundation of support for all the families I will work with as a future Child Life Specialist. #keeper #PediatricCancerAwareness
