Something blue but Buffy’s marrying Spike and Dru (or just Dru) and when it’s over Dru is so heartbroken and doesn’t fully get why they’re not all getting married and becoming a happy little wedded family. Buffy tries to explain but it sounds WAY too much like the divorce talks her parents gave her so she just bails and let’s it be 100% Spike problem. But Dru keeps giving her sad puppy eyes for ages after and trying to coax her back and Buffy is just in “stop making me feel like my shitty dad” hell.

i think maybe btvs/season 4 of btvs would've been better if buffy had canonically dated a girl and loved her unconditionally, like she "did" with those men, because her being the slayer is already an allegory for being queer

in season 2, she has that entire argument with her mom about being the slayer and joyce doesn't accept it, which leads buffy to leave home. then at the start of season 4, when the whole angel arc FINALLY ends and she's moving on from him, things could've worked well (at least at first) if they introduced a girl into her life instead of riley, who’s supposed to be the man who provides her a "healthy" relationship because he isn't a vampire

ultimately any analysis or reading of the buffyverse is going to be colored by the in-universe logic that you must perform guilt to be a good person. maybe it’s how whedon views the world, or other writers, or both, but this is Such a present assumption throughout both shows.

Faith is seen as a bad person because she doesn’t Seem Guilty or Remorseful. maybe she is! I think her spiral shows that she is. She did something terrible by accident and it was certainly very traumatic, but because she doesn’t Present her guilt in the Right Way, the narrative and eventually the main cast consider her to not be a good person.

Buffy constantly presents her guilt even for things that aren’t her fault. Hence she’s a Good Person. She is guilty about the fact that sex with her made Angel lose his soul, she’s guilty about the evil things he does as a result. She presents her guilt for things she does and does not do. Signaling to the audience that she’s Good (and there’s obviously more than just that which makes her good, but that’s the initial pointer in these situations).

Angel is good because he presents his guilt after getting a soul, punishing himself by ostracizing and starving himself. He doesn’t have to actually do anything to do good — eventually he does, but that’s an added bonus. The 100 years that he tells buffy about are presented as penance, as enough to show he is Good.

It’s a very Christian mindset or maybe a generally religious mindset — that your guilt and remorse is only real if other people see it and see you completing penance, regardless of whether you take action to address the wrongdoing or not.

forever mourning the scene where faith was supposed to kiss buffy but the network would’nt allow it, like we really could’ve had EVERYTHING - and also imagine all the ways their relationship could’ve been explored if they had actually kept that scene omg i’m going crazy
