One thing Iāve noticed a lot recently is the very common misconception that Kara in the CW Supergirl series is comic inaccurate, and Iām here to tell you that no, actually, she isnāt!
Iām pretty sure this comes from the fact that yes, Kara in CWSG is inaccurate to one specific comicā Woman of Tomorrow. Which just so happens to be the most popular comic for Supergirl right now, and also the one that the new movie is based upon, but thatās not the only Supergirl comic!
For starters, there was no way that CWSG could have ever been based on that, or even pulled any characterisation from it, because Woman of Tomorrows run started in June of 2021. The sixth and final season of Supergirl ran from March to November of the same year. It would have been literally impossible for the show to so much as pull inspiration from it for a single episode.
So, the show isnāt accurate to Woman of Tomorrow. Then what is it accurate to?
In my opinion, the original āSupergirlā run from 1959 that featured in Action Comics, and āThe daring new adventures of Supergirlā from 1982.
Iāve read both of these runs and I feel so strongly that these are iterations that heavily inspired the version of Kara we see in the show. Sheās silly, sheās lighthearted, and she deeply cares for her friends and family.
Iām, stupidly enough since Iām the idiot who decided to write this post, not very good at putting into words just how similiar these iterations are to who we see in the show. Their general vibe is so alike, and they have this passion for life and love for helping people that is so reflected in CWSGās version of the hero.
(Of course, all of this isnāt to say that Kara doesnāt have these qualities in WoT, these are all cornerstones to Supergirl, but theyre just at the forefront much more here.)
Supergirl is a character weāve had the privilege of having since 1959, which naturally means that the character over time has evolved a lot (and sometimes devolved, looking at you Superman/Batman Supergirl). There is over 60 years of history for this character, naturally there will be pieces of history that some adaptations have to skip out on entirely, and other pieces that will be taken as a holy grail for that character in that iteration.
Obviously, it canāt be accurate to every single comic ever. Thereās absolute bucket loads of source material for this specific character, no one adaptation could ever be 100% accurate, Iād say itās even ambitious to hope for a 50% accuracy. For instance neither the upcoming movie adaptation or the CWās Supergirl, nor any other live action adaptation has ever even touched the mythos of the absolutely fantastic Peter David run. Which makes total sense because itās pretty out there as far as a Supergirl story goes, considering Kara isnāt even in it.
What Iām trying to say here is that no one Supergirl adaptation will ever be able to be 1:1 with every comic, and expecting it to be is an impossible standard. Saying the CWās Supergirl is less comic accurate than the DCās upcoming Supergirl just because it doesnāt fit with Woman of Tomorrow isnāt necessarily true. Itās just not accurate to that comic in particular, which is absolutely fine! I love seeing different takes on Supergirl, sheās my favourite Superhero and thereās so much that can be done with her characterisation and how her lore is tackled, and Iām extremely excited to see the upcoming movie. Just had to get this off my chest!!! Thank you for sticking with this to the end<3
I needed this laugh today. Thank you Noa on Tik Tok
