pauling was taught over and over again about how she cannot have any sort of affection towards her employees that goes against what the administrator and she was doing and outside of professionalism. when she kissed him on the cheek, she tried to reason her action as something to help make them look like a normal couple. though her heart kept pounding against her chest, after her lips left his cheek.

her eyes wanted to look away from jeremy, but she couldn’t pull her gaze away from his. when he spoke in a hush voice about how he believes that everyone was catching on. pauling stopped swaying to the music to only stand there shock that their cover was blown, despite all the research she did about acting like a couple.

“jer-”

her words were cut off when she felt a pair of lips against her own. eyes widened from the shock of what was taking place. her heart was racing even more, worried that it was going to stop any second. after a few moments, she moved her body closer as she returned the kiss. a hand resting on his chest and the other in his hair, her brown eyes closed as she focused onto the kiss that was taken place between them.

she loved him.

but at this moment she was just pauling and he was jeremy. not employees but a couple kissing at a party.

usually, the jobs they’re assigned to aren’t at all affiliated with slow dancing and fancy food, hiding within plain sight or even hiding at all. usually, the crimson stains upon the floor would be blood rather than pricey wine, and the shrieks they hear would be from a life lost rather than a nice outfit ruined by said wine. usually, they’re killers. they’re hard-working beasts. 

and yet, here they are. swaying softly like a seashore on a calm summer day, two supposed young lovers out for a night on the town. his face is muted with a certain merriment, too enthralled with the woman before him to remember their work.  a woman of her stature shouldn’t soften him, but he supposes two wrongs make a right.  he continues in their dance—for once, moving slowly. for her sake. one, two, three. one, two, three. he moves her into a sudden dip, kissing the tip of her nose as they descend. he got away with the last one, might as well see where the line is drawn. 

      “ —great. “

it wasn’t foreign to the assistant to have missions that involved her hiding in plain sight, pretending to be something she wasn’t. this was something she was an expert on before the administrator had found her, but when she was around the team she never hid who she was or the type of woman she was. because of the administrator, pauling had learn how to learn countless of things that would end someone in prison for the longest time for the things she had done.

instead of death and bloodshed, she was wearing a nice dress as she sway to the music that was playing while jeremy lead them into the dance. her body followed every step he took, while her mind was distracted about the smallest details she shouldn’t be focusing on, like how the suit looked nice on him and how he was really good at dancing.

for a few weeks now, pauling had tried her hardest to conceal any inkling of interest she held for her dance partner, her supposedly lover during this job. thoughts of her boss testing pauling if her heart was made out of stone and that she would avoid any romantic feelings towards anyone that works under her.

her thoughts quickly interrupted when she felt herself being lowered by jeremy. she didn’t had much of a chance to figure out what was happening before she felt a soft, light kiss on her nose that caused a shock run through her body. it was the smallest touch and kiss she ever experienced but the shock wasn’t a bad thing. when he pulled her back up, she stepped closer removing any space that separated them from one another. lifting herself up a little bit by standing on her toes in hopes to be almost as tall as him. there was a moment of hesitation coming from her before she leaned closer and placed a gentle kiss on his cheek before pulling away to look at him even more clearly. though their lips were only a mere inch away and she couldn’t help but continue to hold his gaze with her own.

for once in his life, scout doesn’t care. he doesn’t care about the itchiness of his suit, the irritating contact it emits as it presses against skin. he doesn’t care about the posh crowd drinking posh wine, thinking about reasons they’re better than him. he doesn’t care about the party, or himself.  pauling’s voice cements this fact.  scout eyes what he can of his superior. the fancy garment which he’d hate on others merely compliments her petite form. she looks lovely. ‘ lovely ‘ isn’t a word scout often uses, ‘nor even thinks of, but it’s the only word coming to mind as she whispers through the unlikable music. 

lovely.  fingers rest gently against her waist, taking the opportunity to offer a kiss to the jawline. his smile carries a soft mischief, though it’s outshone by sincerity. a nod. 

      “ —remember how t’waltz? “

smooth, slender fingers finds a home on his neck as she waited patiently for his answer through silent words. her body pressed up against his, trying to sell the idea that they were a young couple who doesn’t believe in distances between each other, instead of two agents passing off information to one another. though maybe, their facade wasn’t a facade after all. something that pauling had to wait after the job to ponder about, for now they were here for one thing.

when a pair of lips touched her face, she momentarily froze. eyes were wide from the sudden contact and slowly her cheeks were flushed to a pinkish color. her mind went blank, but her body continue to follow jeremy’s lead as they continue to dance. her dark eyes met a pair of brighter eyes as they held a small mischief to them, his smile was warm and bright. though there was something else in his eyes, something that was trying to prove it wasn’t all mischief he was trying to pull off from that kiss. when he nodded about remembering the plan and offered his own question about remembering how to waltz.

she would offer words, but she was already fighting off the thoughts of what his lips would feel like against her own. she didn’t want to voice her thoughts or desires about wanting him to kiss her, worried that he would mistake it as a command and not a woman who has fallen for the man before her. her eyes continue to focus on his lips as she offered him a nod, informing him that she still remember how to waltz.

“u-um, yeah. yeah, i still remember. it’s kinda of hard to forget some lessons she taught me.”

while waiting patiently for the medic to open his door to her. she does try to be a patient woman and not barge in whenever she wants to, after all if she showed them respect in turn they will show her respect as well. brown eyes staring down at the paperwork that she was holding, she wasn’t quite sure what he was asking for his research, but all she knows was that she was here to get a clear understanding of what he was mentioning in his request.

“afternoon, medic.”

hearing the other man’s greeting, she quickly turned and greeted him back and gave him a small smile as he asked about his request. her eyes glancing back and forth between his office and to him, in hopes that he would catch the memo that she rather talked to him private than out in the open. after all, the administrator had to choose between others when it comes to approving requests.

“i don’t believe there is any discrepancies in your paperwork, but i just want to go over some of the details. if you don’t mind?”

pauling still felt bad that she had to throw the younger woman on a mission this early. she would rather had someone accompany lily on her first mission, though sadly everyone was busy with the other assignments that pauling had given them. the only person she can send lily’s way to accompany her was herself, and she could already hear the scolding tone form the older woman about this.

don’t get attach to them, pauling.

the assistant sighed to herself before acting that nothing had happen when the scout had asked her to go over the specifics with her. this caused a small smile to appear on pauling’s face as she pulled out of some pictures of the location that lily was suppose to go to.

“with your first mission, it comes down to speed. there’s going to be a breach in their security systems in twelve hours. during the breach you will enter from the back side of the building. normally, there will be guards but since there’s going to be a breach, everyone will abandoned post to help solve the problem. you have only ten minutes to get in and out with the goods. i have drawn you a map of where you need to go once you’re inside the building. what you’re getting is an ingot of australium. to be able to figure out what the australium looks like, I also printed up a picture for you as well. Any questions?”

pauling looked down to see the ballonicorn that was being held in front of her. hearing the small noise coming from pyro, she could tell there was something wrong with the balloon creature. looking at the ballonicorn once more, she noticed that it was starting to deflate.

“don’t worry, i’ll fix it.”

she opened her arms towards the pyro waiting for them to hand her the balloon so she could try her best to fix the balloonicorn.

with careful hands, pauling took the ballonicorn and set it down gently. hands digging into her bag as she pulled out some tape and started to find the holes of the creature. once she found the holes in the creature and patch it up, pauling started blowing air in the last hole trying to make the creature become repair again. once pauling determine that she got all the air she could put into the creature she quickly covered the hole with more tape and handed back to pyro.

“there you go.”

ever since pauling started working for the administrator, one of the first things the administrator had her do was have her read on former personnel reports and the new personnel reports that recently started. of course pauling was a woman craving for knowledge and curiosity to the extent that she had read upon some files about the work that was being done by the Conagher family.

pauling was no mechanic nor engineer so the studies and paperwork she had read upon fascinate her. if reports and paperwork was any indication of how the individual mind works, she swore that dellila was a genius. it was normal for her to be sent by the administator for reports on the latest findings that the woman had discover or the prototypes she was building. though pauling enjoyed coming by the RED base and discovering what everyone was up to.

one arm clutching the clipboard to her chest, and one arm outreached towards the door of engie’s work area. her hand knocked on the door twice and waited for a few seconds before she announced who it was.

“hey, dellila? it’s pauling.”

fingers tapping on the steering wheel as she waited for the light to change so they can continue on to their destination. though she needed the sniper to assist her with the job, but she had no idea what to talk about. pauling was good giving orders and instruction not small chat. one thing she learned fast when she first started to work with the administrator was knowing that the older woman did not care for personal things, so the fact that pauling was at a lost for words when it came to coming up with something to say.

“nice weather we are having?”

hands clutching onto her clipboard as she was looking over the job. pauling needed someone that was fast, but she didn’t want to put someone new on the job in case things go haywire. that’s all they really needed, get a new recruit and have her get killed on her first job. she doubted that she could explain it to the administrator about the incident.

slender arms found a home in the form of the man’s slender neck. this was a mission, a job that the administrator needed her to do, but for this task alone she needed assistance. logically she would have chosen spy or possibly sniper to assist her, but the influx of jobs and an illogical part of herself caused the assistant enlisting the help of scout.

part of her believed the reason why she chose him in the first place was because he had seen the real pauling, the pauling that wasn’t bulletproof, a woman who’s heart was not made out of stone. since then, she found herself constantly being pulled towards him with an invisible string. though it was a string that she knew was there.

plus, spy did assure pauling that scout does know some dance techniques and that she should be relaxed when it comes to dancing. though, it didn’t help that her mind was constantly racing with thoughts about the mission and how she swore she could feel his heart beating, though she could mistake it as her own.

“remember the plan, jeremy?”

her voice was hushed as she leaned forward, her lips brushing against his ear and she couldn’t help but feel her face burned up. maybe bringing him here was a bad idea, but there was no going back.

her gun was out of ammo, everyone was separated with their corpses on the ground. the mercenaries who were like a family to her was all dead and gone, their body would not move again and it was completely her fault. her heart beating a mile a minute, her hands shook from fear and her blood felt iced cold to her. knowing that this was the end of the line for her, either if she gave them the information and they spare her or if she doesn’t give them the information, the end result will always be the same. miss pauling was going to die.

every step the older man took it was met with two steps back as the assistant continue to keep her distance away from him. trying to prolong her death and try to think of a way to get herself out of this situation. if there was a stick or a rock in her reach she might be able to live another day.

hearing him tell her to let him killing the administrator, the assistant shook her head as the words stumble out of her mouth.

“we both know i can’t let you.”

the woman just sighed as she heard jean’s answer about how she was paying very close attention and how she didn’t want to interrupt the assistant if she was doing a pause for a dramatic effect. she couldn’t help but find the other woman’s comment quite humorous for the main fact that she somehow convince the woman she was doing a dramatic pause.

moving the clipboard towards the scout, a pen on top as she offered the clipboard towards the other woman.

“jean, you’ll know if i’m going to do a dramatic...”

purposefully pauling let her words hang in the word as she pretended that nothing happen. her face trying to hide any traces that she was doing this on purpose before a small smile spread across her thin lips before she spoke up once more.

fingers dug into the dirt ground that was soiled from the blood and tears they all shed during this encounter. the pain, the suffering and the loss that they suffer on their own. her head continue to stare at the ground through blurred vision from her tears that she was shedding.

her body straighten up as she felt a pair of hands curling around her. the touch was foreign, but it was welcoming nevertheless. it took a few seconds before the assistant finally relaxed and leaned into scout’s arms. her head resting on his shoulder, she was so tired. tired of all of this.

then she felt her head being lifted up as their eyes met. blue meeting brown as she felt her heart stopped for a moment as he stared at her. for that brief moment, pauling felt that the man before her actually saw her true self that was beyond miss pauling.

his words were reassuring as she couldn’t help but give him a shaky smile as she continued to look at him. his eyes remind her of the ocean, inviting and calming but it could be dangerous as well. she swore his eyes was drawing her, wanting her to get lost them. her head slowly moved forward as it wanted to get lost in something that isn’t the world that they were in now. her eyes started to slowly close as her face got closer towards his, she felt his warm breath on her lips.

maybe, just maybe that he actually holds a spot in her heart after all. a spot she never knew existed.
