INTERNATIONAL POP UNDERGROUND CONVENTION
Twenty years ago... if you were there, well, you know!
Ah, the memoires... Don Pyle (Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet) recently posted an amazing video shot by bandmate Reid Diamond (RIP). The Pet Parade, a regular Olympia event, was held immediately before Shadowy Men and the MELVINS played outdoors in Sylvester Park as part of IPU. Given the long-range impact of the convention, I'm surprised how little information there is about IPU on the internet: Seattle Weekly commemorated the 10-year anniversary; it receive a brief mention in Sara Marcus' new book, Girls To The Front; and a recent Olyblog.net post was illustrated with the IPU manifesto. [ sample: "...because we are the gravediggers who have buried the grey spectre of rock star myth..." (fusspot: insert Nevermind joke here) ]
Thanks to Candice, Calvin and everyone who organized and participated in that historic weekend; it's one of my favorite memories EVER!!
Doppler Effect
Amazing scene from Jim Jarmusch's debut feature, Permanent Vacation, now playing with a beautiful 35mm print at Northwest Film Forum. Hurry!
(Sharp eyes will recognize actor Frankie Faison who played Burrell on television's "The Wire." This was his first film, too.)
Anthropologist, or Apologist...
Seattle-based Japanese artist Etsuko Ichikawa is shown creating her beautiful Pyrograph drawings in a film by up-and-comer Alistair Banks Griffin.
This collaboration is part of the Anthropologist project paid for by retailer Anthropologie. While it is great to see them "supporting the work of inspiring individuals," the cynic in me wonders whether this isn't merely a marketing ploy. You see, Anthropologie and similar stores like Urban Outfitters have been the targets of ongoing complaints accusing them of ripping off the design ideas of third-party artists. I hate to think that knock-offs of Ichikawa's dramatic Pyrographs will be reincarnated as "store design" without her knowing.
The first digital camera designed by Steven J. Sasson in 1975 weighed 8lbs, recorded black & white photos to a cassette tape and took 23 seconds to record or read an image.
The Donut Cheeseburger.
Disgusting.
Really.
I say deliver a dozen to Rob Ford's office and hope for a heart attack.
This sticker seen on a street sign at 11th and Olive on Capitol Hill in Seattle; probably leftover from Slutwalk.
As of July 25, 2011 my share of the U.S. National Debt is $130,000. Better get a job soon.
The truth is... I keep posting kitty photos in hope that missus_fusspot might start reading my blog.

Shower Cat didn't get the memo.
Turning from lion to leopard... you just know this is going to end badly for all involved.
TECHTIP: APPLE OS X 10.7 LION
CHALLENGE: Folks have asked me if they should upgrade to Lion.
SOLUTION: Absolutely, but as with any OS upgrade, wait a few weeks; let somebody else suffer out there on the bleeding edge. Here's an excellent review from Ars Technica, along with a list of compatible apps from RoaringApps

While I'm on the subject of Toronto's "progressive" leadership... the city is spending $200,000 to REMOVE bike lanes on Jarvis Street. Perhaps that will be paid for when Tim Hortons buys the libraries.
One bad decision after another... So Sad.
Great cities don't privatize their libraries.
But in Toronto, under the fiscal leadership of Mayor Rob Ford and his Councillor brother, Doug Ford, library privatization may be just around the corner. Apparently Doug would rather have a Tim Hortons.
Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dumber. Once again, amalgamation proves to be the worst thing that ever happened to Toronto. REAL Toronto, that is.
