The shadow of surface tension
An insect like a wasp or a water strider can rest atop the water, held up by surface tension. This means that the cohesive force of the water molecules sticking to each other is stronger than the force of the bug being pushed down by gravity. This works because it spreads its weight out over a large surface area (like snowshoes). That creates a slight indentation in the top of the water, changing the direction that the light coming down is refracted and re-directing it slightly sideways (that’s where the bright halos around the dark areas come from). And what’s the absence of light?

This piece of foam looks innocent enough, but it is pure evil.
March in Nebraska
Big Choice
Today is Kid 2's Kindergarten roundup. When asked what he wants his teacher to call him (either Charles or Charlie), he flatly said:
"They can call me Roscoe."
Alrighty, then.
Kind of HAVE to reblog, don't I?
My training regiment: for every mile I run, I can have 1 oreo. Today, I must've run 64 miles.
ARGH!
I had a really good idea for a post. I think it was about yoga. I should really write these things down during Warrior 2.
Like I posted before, Kid #2 has been belting this song out for about a week. Finally got it on camera. Oh, and did a little editing to help him out. Enjoy.
Time to Get Serious
During my long run (7 miles) this weekend, I realized that the Lincoln Half Marathon is only 8 weeks away. Probably should get serious about it, huh? My goals are still in front of me, but I'm going to have to kick it in the ass if I want to reach them.
Today was a good step. Did 3 miles of intervals (3 x 800s). It's not much, but it's a start. Now I just need to find out if I go with 3 runs per week (1 speed, 1 tempo, and 1 long) or 4 runs (add a 3-4 miler at "normal" pace). Plus, I need to be serious about cross-training. Right now? Core work and some yin yoga. Let's see how that goes.
Done rambling...for now.

Star Wars family tree with possible characters for the new movies
Snow day? Forget it, I'm going to work until Snowmageddon '13 hits. Dedicated? Perhaps. Want to stay home tomorrow during 8-10" of snow making it a 3 day weekend? Most definitely.
