As always, the best romance scenes are those when a couple is alone and they’re just being a little grumpy and nagging at each other in a good-natured way.

Riko and Miyako always feel very much like a explicit counter-point given towards all the dysfunctional relationships between the other characters (similar to Rei and Hiro, but this is a yuri work after all, so Miyariko get more screen time), as if to say: what happens in school isn’t how the rest of your life is going to work out. It’s probably going to get better, and, at the very least, different – a lesson Yuu is still coming to grips with after reading so much romance and wanting to experience the real thing for so long.

With season one done, we can definitely say that these two did a very good job at that, contrasting their playfulness against the overly serious and angsty way Touko is building up her relationship with Yuu.

Can I also say that it’s really refreshing to see a yuri series with older women in a relationship together instead of it always being focused for the most part on school romances…I feel like especially with the way so many people talk shit about girls falling in love with girls as being something we’ll “Grow out of” when we’re younger or it just being “A phase” or other such nonsense it’s good and important for a yuri show to have two adult women in love with each other as one of its pairings

God these images still send this ENTIRE thrill through me. They just evoke that feeling of being a child with a book too large for you, staying for so long on a single picture that you feel like you could turn around in it.

Gurney consistently produces a world that feels completely reasonable and real. The color, the light, the relationships between fore- and background,

the fact that it seems like a real world, where people are engaging in perfectly reasonable cultural activities…

The natural gestures, implying the personalities and relationships of characters in a single image…

And it’s quite creative. I mean, look at this pair of bagel sellers. WHAT A GREAT WAY TO SELL BAGELS?
