MITCHELL LOVELACE-TORRES. 25. CIS MAN. HE/HIM is here! They’ve lived in Cascade for 25 YEARS and currently reside in DOWNTOWN. MITCHIE is a HEAD BAKER at GRATEFUL BREAD and frequently hears that they look a lot like JALEN THOMAS BROOKS. Funny, huh? If ever caught by Letterboxd, they’d say 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU is in their Top 4 and the theme song to their life’s soundtrack would be SO EASY (TO FALL IN LOVE) by OLIVIA DEAN.
tw: death, and implied illness of a family member.
mitchie, you were named by your eldest sibling, she had loved this one character from a book she read as a child. your parents had agreed and you became the final piece of the lovelace puzzle. growing up you didn’t have much, but you also didn’t want for anything, the love of your parents had been the warmest blanked throughout your early life, and you had your siblings every step along the way, teaching you what the world could look like.
hardship only came when school came into the picture. i remember seeing those eyes so full of hope lose some of their shine when you came back, how another’s cruelty had inadvertently dulled your light. still, i saw you persist, trying to maintain that smile and tenderness that was such an integral part of your being. no matter the ridicule and the way you felt isolated, you smiled through it all, because you didn’t want to worry your loved ones back one, but in your silence, i saw your pain.
your parents had always been hard workers, and they provided for you all as best they could. you were privileged in that sense, mitchie. able to see such true love and care and how no matter how difficult it got, they were a team, whenever there was an issue it was never them against each other, it was them against the issue, a team. it was their love story that made you fall in love with the idea of love, of being able to be with someone and look at them, knowing you’re always in warm and safe hands. you loved them so fiercely that on their anniversary you even prepared a whole meal for them, asking questions to the other members of your family about how your parents met, what was their first meal together, and getting adults to taste test your very first cocktail ever made. after that happened you kept cooking for every special occasion that arose, your way of giving back to the people you loved the most. it was always you and your mother in the kitchen, watching her make meals for everybody, and she passed that knowledge and love to you.
when you realized you were different, a fear rose in you, and when the time came that you worked up the courage to tell your family that you liked boys the way people expected you to like girls, they were all sad. not because you liked boys, but because they believed you could trust them with anything, as was the way you had all been raised. your mother had been the first to speak up wasn’t she, when she held your chubby cheeks and reminded you that you were a lovelace, so of course you’d fall for a nice boy, because you mitchell lovelace, are made of love.
your parents made it big. selling software that would make them million and soon enough all your lives changed for the best. suddenly you could all afford everything you could ever wished for, and the first thing your mom did was get an estate build, with enough rooms to house all your friends, she once told you. so when you set off to college she sent you with the expectation that one day you’d bring back a whole boat load of friends and she could call her own children, because they were taking care of her little sun, when she wasn’t around.
but not all times could be good, not when the person who named got sick. i remember all you clinging to all the memories you could with her, your eldest sister. you two had been inseparable growing up and the way you changed after you first got news that she was sick was like seeing the light fully drain out of someone's eyes. the ways you still tried to get her to smile through it all, and it she fought, mitchie, she fought so hard, and she was so proud of you. please forgive yourself for not making it in time to see her one last time, and i know you're still hurting because you're still leaving voicemails to her numbers.
