— (re)introduction!

i changed my url and wanted to do a little re-intro for you all. here’s the basics:

i’m jay, 26, a genderqueer demiace lesbian.

m. jay atlas is my pen name.

my pronouns are they/he.

i’ve been writing for over a decade (mostly reworking na).

i have a degree in psychology w/ a minor in english.

i’m starting a new job in august at a high school.

because of this and because i’ve been an adult for 8 years, i do not typically follow anyone under the age of 18. i don’t really post anything that is not safe for minors so you can follow me. i just probably won’t follow back. (current mutuals excluded)

night ascending — main. this is my baby. i started writing the first version (by hand) in notebooks in high school (circa 2010).

Her homeland on the verge of war — both from outside nations and within. There is revolution brewing in the streets of Athanasios and Isa will follow it to the heart of the kingdom. What happens when the banished princess returns - a call for blood echoing in her heart? 

beast: ravenous and holy — side. my newest wip.

For B and Danny, the school year begins: a new school, the same people. Treated as adults instead of children but still expected to know what comes next. Sometimes new friends can bring a lasting warmth to the chill. For Evie and Theo, the school year begins: a chapter ending, their last year in these walls. Can’t be trusted to know who they are but are still expected to know the next step. Being lost with the right person can help you find yourself.

crushing glass — side. i haven’t written up a summary for this yet but:

a dare gone horribly wrong leads to a missing/presumed dead teen and we focus on the other teens in the aftermath while the adults/authorities try to find the missing girl and keep the others safe and out of the way at the same time. but there’s more to the story than the teens told their parents.

windward — side. PIRATES.

There are more secrets than can be considered aboard The Malacia - all of the crew has secrets, even the Captain has his secrets. These secrets bind them together and it is a bond that cannot be broken, not even by death. Albin holds the threads. He will not let them go.

CHIPPED JAWS ; excerpt time!

Writer challenge: think of a way to hint at magic/superpowers that isn’t overdone. We’ve all seen eyes that glow or change color, teeth that grow sharp, ears that get pointy.

I want to see a character’s eyebrows ripple into tiny scales when they’re concentrating on their powers. Or someone’s nose disappears when they cast a spell.

What hasn’t been done yet?

How about colour changing nails, storing the energy of a spell being prepared?

Ooh, I like that! Particularly with your notes: 

#Smaller spells just look like nail varnish #more powerful magic and the nails start glowing #or heating up #over use of powers makes them brittle and at risk of cracking

This would be amazing in a graphic novel, or animated. I can see it as one of those magic systems where instead of wands, magicians manipulate the strings of magic that make up the world.

Mage battles include frantic gestures: weaving and pulling and holding your fingers just so, with the strain showing in the fierce brightness coming from those fingernails, which are starting to crack under the onslaught.

This sounds cool. I like this.

Nail polish is the local equivalent of magic potions, with purposes ranging from purely decorative to strengthening the nails for powerful spells. Some people experiment with nail art as well, painting symbols to better channel different aspects of magic. 

Long, well kept nails are a status symbol among mages: Cracks and other damage is a sign of overexertion and there are no shortcuts to making the nails grow back, thus undamaged nails are a sign of skill and power. 

Of course this entirely disregards the effects of constant spell casting for even the most experienced mages. Anyone who is still learning new things and pushing at their limits will have a hard time maintaining a perfect manicure.

The worldbuilding potential is vast. If only some people have magical talent, then there might be a fashion of wearing nail polish to fake it – or that might be seen as a colossal dishonesty, and risky to boot. (What do you do if someone challenges you to a duel? Or there’s a disaster and people look to you to solve it? Awkward.)

If everyone can use magic to some degree, then fingernails would be treated with much more care. People might even carry around pocket tools so they’re not tempted to use their nails to pry something open and damage them.

Little kids sticking fingers in their food and pretending to cast spells across the dinner table.

A habit of chewing on one’s nails considered to be a shocking kind of self-harm. 

Junior magicians learning their first spell: flashlight. Staying up late, watching their fingers dance in the dark of their rooms, lighting up their blankets in bright colors.

Middle-finger gestures that actually do something.

i hate doing this but i have $10 to my name and now i have to get a new tire for my car. it’ll run me around $200 at the cheapest to have my tire replaced so any help would be so appreciated. i’m sobbing in my car waiting to get my spare put on.
