Portfolio | Simplify Digital
UX/UI Designer 2015
Simplify Digital operates the UK’s largest and fastest growing ‘triple play’ (TV, home phone and broadband) comparison sales platform. The have provided white label products for Compare the Market, Sainsbury’s, Dixons and uSwitch.
My role at Simplify Digital allowed me to work cross-platform on web, tablets and print. I worked on both in-house projects and on client based projects.
Blog Design
The blog was designed for Simplify Digital Web Services who, as a separate entity, needed to boost their online presence to show off the technology they offered and remain relevant.
The design made use of a clean layout with a minimal colour palette. The design was brought to life with colourful hoverer effects and typography.
Typography
Typography played an important role for the blog design; the goal of the blog was to get readers interested in the technological part of Simplify Digital, whilst staying up-to-date.
I started off by looking into what other tech blogs, publishers and websites used as well as looking into the history and original application of the shortlisted fonts.
The selected font was Helvetica Neue for the fact that it was widely used and accepted, available in different weights, easy to implement and well suited for screen designs.
Design for Customer Care
Simplify Digital offered a call centre service to their clients, the process which the customer care staff went through was long and tedious. With new clients bringing in new regulations there they had to read a series of mandatory statements to the customer as well as upsell any relevant products.
This was an interesting design challenge as it was essentially about making the customer care staff member’s user journey as simple and concise as possible for them so that they can convey the correct and most relevant information to the customers as possible.
Portfolio | Basware
UX/UI Designer 2014-2015
Basware is an eProcurement company that offers technology for the public sector. My role was to work on the UI and UX for Basware as they built their own product and moved away from third party software.
Being the principal designer gave me to opportunity to make changes to the product as well create a UI style guide.
I made sure that designs I produced adhered to the Government Design Service Manual as well applying common UX paradigms to ensure a successful experience.
Style Guide
l began working on a UI style guide for Basware as there was no clear design language or documentation for the developers. Up until this point there were discretions between the final screens and the intended design.
I standardised the components used and introduced some new ones, collating them in the UI Style Guide. As well as that I introduced quality control procedures over the final developed screens.
Design
Due to the complexity of the eProcurement industry and the backend databases, I always started out by creating a user journey on Axure. This was useful not only to myself but to other stakeholders.
The design process consisted of creating the screens and reiterating them, presenting them to the team throughout. Once the designs were submitted to development I worked closely with the developer; this allowed for quality control and encouraged communication.
Portfolio | Peak
UX/UI Designer 2014
My role at Peak as a UI/UX designer gave me the opportunity to work in designing for Android and IOS in the brain training mobile game industry.
Peak has had a huge amount of success in recent years reaching number one on the Apple store among other successes. Working at Peak provided me with valuable skills in perfecting user interfaces as well as being platform and device specific.
My main duties at Peak included leading the Peak Android Alpha design process and creating assets for the game that were suitable for both iOS and Android.
Design
My main project at Peak was getting Peak Android Alpha ready for launch. I picked this project up early on and saw it through until it’s launch to a closed group testing.
The process started off by studying the Materials design guide and creating low fidelity mock up that were in accordance to Peak’s brand guidelines and colours. After a series of iteration I created the final high fidelity mockups, which were specified and sent to the developers involved.
Once the Alpha version was built it was tested throughout Singapore and later modified and released on Google Play in March 2015.
Portfolio | Nutmeg
UX/UI Designer 2014
At Nutmeg I had the opportunity to work in a small creative team within the FinTech start up scene. My role included working on the early stages of Nutmeg’s Personal Pension product, the marketing site and in-app site. I also worked on the early stages of developing the mobile app as well as creating high fidelity mock up, analysing user tests and conducting research on users.
User Research
With the Nutmeg’s Personal Pension product in development, user research was vital. I was tasked with creating a customer interview guide which was used throughout the interview process.
I also attended interviews and created user profiles that presented the key narratives and experiences that would help later on with the design process as well as use scenarios.
As well as user research, I also carried out secondary research into other pension providers; I looked at what services and products they offer, how they present their products as well as the application process.
This research was enlightening as it illustrated how tedious the process of applying for pensions can be as well as what was required.
Design
The dashboard at the time was only designed for one product, and with the pension product due the dashboard had to be redesigned for multiple products.
This project was split into two parts; the first part looked at the redesign as a long term project; the dashboard style and components added, such as risk level, profile pictures and a table view. The second part was to design a more immediate solution for displaying multiple products; this was the main priority as there was a short time frame to work within. Though the changes were quite simple the end result met the needs of the users and developers.
Why Fonts Matter | Book Review
Fonts can affect our sub-conscience; they can take us back to our favourite childhood memories as well as appeal to our personalities and ambitions. Sarah Hyndman discusses all of this and more in her book ‘Why Fonts Matter’.
