Do you think you guys would release the full raw data or at least a filtered version of it?

We wouldn’t release the raw data for this particular survey since we didn’t tell people before they filled out the form that others would get access to it. We always want to be upfront about who will be able to see data before people take a survey so they can decide whether or not they are comfortable participating.

If people are interested in us releasing the data for future surveys, we can definitely do that (just let us know) and we will make it as clear as possible to our participants before they start the survey.

thank you for sharing the first part of the results, it was really neat! I was even surprised a few times, like by some of the favorite/least favorite episodes and some of the fandoms that people found ML from. Were those the only fandoms people listed or were there others?

We’re glad you liked seeing the results so far! 

What’s important to consider about the favorite/least favorite episode question is that it wasn’t a required question—meaning not all participants answered it— and it was an open ended question—meaning participants could write in whatever they wanted. There are 85 “episodes” people could have chosen from (including the New York and Shanghai specials as a few people chose them) so votes are going to be divided. The top favorite episode only had 293 votes and the least favorite had 171. While those numbers are noteworthy, it’s really a false idea that, for example, fandom overwhelmingly loves “Chat Blanc” as only 17% of participants said it was their favorite or that fandom overwhelmingly hates “Puppeteer 2″ as that only reflects 10% of the people who took the survey. If you were surprised that a particular episode was in the top 10 favorite or least favorite, it may just be that the episode has more vocal support/opposition (since people who have a favorite/least favorite but don’t feel strongly about it may have just skipped the question) or that the episode was at the front of people’s minds for unrelated reasons (like if they saw a post about the episode) when they took the survey so it was the first they thought of. I hope that helps put that section more into perspective!

Great question! Those were not the only fandoms people listed as having gotten them into ML. There were several other fandoms that were mentioned by one or two people that we did not include in the results since it was such a small portion of our participants, but we’re happy to tell you them:

how do you feel that people are using your survey information to further an agenda of making fun of people for not liking certain episodes?

We had no idea that was happening, that is absolutely horrible and we’re so sorry for anyone who has experienced this. Our goal has always been to bring us together as a community, not divide people over silly differences of opinion.

To anyone who has felt antagonized because of their preferences, please know that you are an incredibly important part of this fandom. There are so many factors that go into why we like what we like and dislike what we dislike and no one deserves to feel less than for having an opinion that other people disagree with. This is a space to celebrate all of the ways we experience fandom and all the ways we love this show and we hope that those who follow us and those who participate in our surveys understand this.

To anyone antagonizing others over their preferences, we are shocked and upset you would use us and what we have shared to hurt others. So many hours of work go into this project and it’s heartbreaking that anyone would use it to put someone else down. Please do not use our work this way, thank you.

Now that Gang of Secrets has arrived, will this impact future surveys about identity reveals? And will there be questions about fan attitudes about specific key show moments, such as the "this is the reason we can't reveal" part in Cat Blanc (which I think is BS :P)?

We didn’t necessarily have a survey planned to go in depth about identity reveals so that won’t be affected, but we would like to have shorter surveys that ask about fan attitudes about key show moments. At this point in time, we’re not sure how we’ll be able to conduct those surveys. They are a bit more tricky to plan out since the episode release schedule for ML is so unclear and since some people will only watch episodes in a particular dub that may not air for another several weeks/months meaning we would either have to have surveys stay open indefinitely or we would have to recognize that only a small fraction of the population of people who answer our surveys could respond.

So I just filled out your fandom Survey and realized something. In the infographics section at the beginning when you ask for age why didn’t you ask for gender or sexuality? I always think those are interesting metrics to look at for any fandom and not just age

Those are interesting metrics and we have a future survey planned about LGBTQ+ headcanons for the show in which we will ask about gender/sexuality, but for this particular survey, we didn’t want to ask too many personal or identifying questions at once. It’s important to us that everyone who takes these surveys feels comfortable and safe with what information they’re being asked (and to be clear, there will always be an opt-out answer for personal questions like this)

 It’s cool information to have on its own (and there are many other people who have data about gender in this fandom so we likely wouldn’t showcase anything new) but the age information is different in that we’d also like to see how age bracket correlates with opinions such as favorite ships/characters, how age correlates with what year an individual started watching ML etc. whereas we wouldn’t be doing that with gender and sexuality in this survey.

when will the results be posted?

As of right now, we don’t have an exact date the results will be posted. We’re thinking about posting them incrementally since there is so much data to go through (and we’ve gotten over 1000 responses so far which is amazing!) but it will at least be a week after the survey closes.

Once Zoé has been established as a character in canon, we would definitely like to explore fandom’s perceptions and opinions of her! The same goes for all other newly introduced characters, we’d really love to track people’s initial reactions and how those opinion might change over time!
