GUYS THEY FIGURED OUT THE ROMAN CONCRETE RECIPE THAT MAKES IT IMMUNE TO SEAWATER
http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/mystery-of-2000-year-old-roman-concrete-solved-by-scientists/ar-BBDO5VC
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I KNOW RIGHT?!???
I can’t help but feel this is one of those things where we had actual documents saying “it was done with this and this”, and some old rich white guys looked at it and went “oh mirth, the ancients were so silly. They probably wrote this basic stuff down and the actual builders had Secret Techniques we need to Discover”
For a long time, archeologists didn’t know how greek women did their high-piled braids and hair. There was a word that translated to “needle” in the descriptions. They went, “seems like we’ll never know.” Then a hairdresser took a fucking needle (big needle) and did the fucking thing you do with needles, which is sew - and by sewing the braids into place, she replicated ancient styles.
The Egyptians had diagrams of construction steps for their pyramids. Archeologists went “oooh, ancient primitive people, how they do this?” LITERALLY MYTHBUSTERS OR THE OLD DISCOVERY CHANNEL or someone went “what if we did the thing the pictures said they did” AND GUESS FUCKING WHAT. GUESS FUCKING WHAT.
Also that thing with native Americans saying squirrels taught them how to get sap for maple syrup, and colonizers going “that’s a myth sweaty”
Sincerely, if the scientists had to do actual analysis like spectroscopy or whatever, kudos, and no flame. But swear to god, if all these years, we’ve had the recipes and there was just this fuckin institutional bias against just TRYING THE THING THEY SAID WOULD WORK, HELLFIRE AND DEMENTIA.
In this case, it was more they had roman writings saying what went into it but figured there was some secret because when they followed roman recipes it never turned out quite right.
Because the sources left by Romans always just said to mix with water. Because, if you were a Roman??? Obviously you knew that you used seawater for cement. Duh. That’s so obvious that they never really bothered specifying that you use seawater to mix it, because it wasn’t necessary, everyone knew that.
But then the empire fell, other empires rose and fell, time passed, and by the time we were trying to reconstruct the formula the ‘mix the dry ingredients with seawater’ trick had been forgotten, until chemical analysis finally figured it out again.
It’s sort of like the land of Punt, a ally of Egypt that’s mentioned all the time, but we don’t actually know where it was located. Because it isn’t written down anywhere. Why would they write it down? It’s Punt. Everyone knew where Punt was back then. It’d be ridiculous to waste the ink and space to specify where it was, every child knows about Punt.
3000 years later and we have no damned clue where it was, simply because at the time it was so blindingly obvious that it was never written down.
Its like the calender thing all over again
Throwback Thursday: Muse of Fire
WE ONLY HAVE ONE WEEK TO APPRECIATE THESE DATES
And once again Americans get all the fun
Every single time one of my friends says they “know” I am going to pass the bar.
Best Toby quote ever.
At work I review a lot of signatures and today it just clicked.
Scribbles.
Imagine if aliens come to us and realise that instead of difficult to fake dna, or fingerprints, or retinas, we have this scribble.
This is my scribble. No one else can use it because its mine.
Not so much as Humans are Weird as Humans are Toddlers…
Humans are weird
Again, I had a thought.
So, Human protectiveness. Sure, we can be aggressive when protecting our friends but not always. We can have different levels of it.
If some nasty Alien is disrespecting your crew member Nala by telling bad jokes and stabbing at her species you just grab Nala’s slim form and turn her around. “Ignore that idiot, you and I are having Ice Cream with Netflix. Did I tell you your tentacles look sooo shiny today?” Like, we make them forget the bad and remind them they have nice friends anyways.
Then we have verbal abuse. Very clever and mean ways to break spirit. “What did you say to our Captain? You with your [insert word] and your [insert word] are so awful you should never have left home you [bleeep] [bleep]! Don’t even get me started on that tail.” Our crew is silent because they never thought we had that vocabulary. That we could nail down another creatures faults and flaws and ultimately break someone’s spirit. The other Aliens leave with their tail behind their legs, devastated.
But don’t threaten us. Because there is no turning back from a human who has been disrespected and threatened.
War'lac had known it was a bad idea to bring two humans along to the negotiation. But the Pleets had insisted, wanting to see what the humans were like up close. The Pleets, fat and gross beings with four black eyes and bio blades along their forearms, enjoyed war and pillage. The humans had declined working with their kind and for good reason. Human Jenna had been calm the entire meeting but Human Becca had silently been fuming as the Pleets stated their requests. “You have entered a zone that we conquered 6 clicks ago. Comply or perish.” The Pleet leader said and Wer'lac shrunk back. “We won’t last to the next solar system without our rations! And we only have a defensive weapon to use against stray asteroids. To pick it apart and hand it over…” They laughed and Wer'lac knew it was useless. Their own crew were not species of fighting or war. They were explorers and scientists. “And also, if you do not comply quickly, we will start by taking your humans.” Their leader said and pointed at Jenna with a green finger. Human Jenna looked genuinely surprised and Human Becca… she had that infamous stare in her eyes. “What?” Human Becca asked, her voice ice cold. Wer'lac flinched and tried to calm their human. “We’ll grab the cute one, and destroy her before your very eyes. Skin her alive and tie her up agains the cockpit glass. ” The Pleets laughed and Wer'lac looked at them with horror. He glanced at Human Jenna, who was barely breathing. No, she was staring just as Human Becca was. Human Becca stood slowly and leaned across the table on her hands. Her voice lowered without breaking the stare. “What did you say?” She asked, a calm wrath in her voice. Wer'lac looked between them, helplessly. “Don’t worry, we can do the same to you too.” The Pleets leader said, showing teeth. That was the last thing he said. Human Jenna and Human Becca never shared at word or look but still sprung at the same time. Across the table they jumped one Pleet each and then chaos broke loose. Bones were broken. Skin was torn open by scratching. It was a dance of legs and arms inflicting damage with every hit. Eyes were dug out of their skulls with clawed fingers.
Wer'lac had assumed that Human Jenna had sharpened her finger nails that morning for aesthetic purposes. That’s what she had told him. Now he felt uncertain of it.
Human Becca had dislocated an arm and torn it from its owners body. She inspected it closely and then dumped it on the floor. Three were dead, two moaned in pain and the last one limped away. Human Jenna looked after him but shrugged. “Let him tell the others. They’ll learn to not cross us again.” She said. Human Becca looked at her stained clothes and sniffed the blood. “It smells spicy. You think we can eat them?” She asked. Jenna shrugged. “Only one way to find out.”
Wer'lac sat frozen in his seat. He had forgotten the tales of human encounters and the warnings they came with. The humans in his crew had been so nice and docile and protective he had forgotten their true nature. Apex omnivorous predators. Stalkers and killers. Intelligent and creative. He was happy to have them on his side and not the other way around.
Love it!

Humans are the weird ones pt. 2
After first mate ‘Meeb’ meet them on a night time excursion, the small humans became lost in the ship. For 8 year old Connor, 6 corridors and 3 levels was a bit much. Everything was a glowing purple/ blue and nothing indicated you were on a new level. KluUggö didn’t have feet to step with, so the ship was really a giant corkscrew you could slide on. Kate loved the doors, they didn’t just slide, or opened on a hinge like at home, some just melted. Out was a melting door that caught their attention while walking around. About 20ft from the bridge a door that was clearly green was there, then it wasn’t. ‘Connor! The door is gone!’ Kate grabbed Connors hand and pointed with her other. She started walk to it when they heard a sound like a hissing snake. Still a good ways away from the door they both freeze. Connor couldn’t remember anything about snakes from colonizing academy. He didn’t want to go this way anymore but Kate was walking again. About 5 ft from the door another sound stops them. “WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING??!! Both kids freeze at the sound of their mothers voice. A face pops out of the door they were about to go into, the KluUggöian was entirely pink with his tail wrapped around his head. He had no idea what was wrong with the human.
The kid’s knew. They had been told not to wander and they had. Now it’s time to get 'The lecture ’ as they have started to call it.
Connor and Kate turned around just as their mom got to them. She put one hand on each head and then slid it down to their shoulder. She finished scanning them with her eyes, looking for who knows what, then she let out a sigh and hugged them.
Once she was sure her babies were safe, the lecture began. As they walked back down the corridor to the rooms they were assigned, 'Meeb’ and the no longer pink Klu looked out the doors and spotted each other. The formerly pink KluUggö, who’s nick name would become 'bubble gum’ thanks to the kids, slid over to the first mate. After several seconds of tentical/tail appendage flicking and dubious sounds, both aliens decided not to note this in the logs. They don’t have a word for “loosing your shit on your kids because you are so glad they arn’t dead” anyway.
Several hours later, the human family emerge from their rooms for food. The father is pointing out signs and the meaning, attempting to avoid the previous nights terror of missing kids. They smile and nod or wave at KluUggö as they pass on the way to the mess hall. The symbol for the mess hall looks like zebra strips to Kate. When they enter the room there’s a problem right off, the Klu don’t use chairs. "Uhh hun, I think we have a small problem” the dad said. “Nope!” Said mom as she crossed the room. She pushed a small panel on the wall with a symbol that looked like 2 hippopotamus, one laying on top of the others back. The closet opened and a folded up picnic table was inside. Three kid’s heard a familiar voice behind them, the tinny sound of a translator program. “Do you require assistance human Margrate Smith title Doctor?” A timid looking KluUggö in a crew uniform approached the family. “Thank you, and please call me Maggie. This is my husband mate James, and our children Kate and Connor. ” The KluUggö bowed to the family, startling the mom and dad, and making Kate giggle at the sight of his tentical. The KluUggö rose a moment later and pushed a few buttons inside the closet. The table slide out and opened. When it clicked into place on the floor the door closed. “Please, sit.” The KluUggö translator voice said. Would you like you sit with us? “ James asked as he helped Kate on to the bench seat. The KluUggö made a sound the translator couldn’t decifer and a shiver went through him. "I would be honored” the translator voice said in its modulated tone, completely at odds with the pale purple color of the KluUggö meaning he was happy. After the humans were seated, the Klu positioned himself at the end of the table. The pad in the middle of the table had 12 keys on it. Some looked like the numbers Connor learned at the academy. The KluUggö turned a pinker shade of purple and the tinny voice stared again “Would you like me to show you how to call nutrition?” his tail was held stiff behind him while he waited for a response. “Please! Feel free to show us!” Maggie smiled at the Klu and gestured to the pad. The KluUggö was changing colors back to purple, and his long thin arm came up to tap buttons. Klu had 3 fingers that did not have a joint in them, so to Kate it looked like 3 pencils. KluUggö had hands similar to humans but the palm was much, much smaller. He began typing on the pad and making squeekes at the holograph. When he was done, the father James nodded to the alien, “Thank you for your help, would you tell us your name please? ” The KluUggö had a wave off pink spread over his skin, and a series of noises came out of his mouth area. James and Maggie looked at each other in confused but trying to be polite, silence. Kate and Connor looked at each other and grinned. “Can we call you Cluck for short? ” Connor asked. Kate started giggling and nodding. The parents started to say no when the KluUggö turned a pale shade of pink and made a squeaky sound. “That would be acceptable” the Klu replied, he had already heard of Meeb. James looked a little concerned but before he could say anything an motorized cart drove up to the table. “Luckies! Connor they have Luckies! Mom!Mom! Can I have those! ” Maggie chuckled and nodded while handing Kate the bowl. “Connor what do you want to eat? ” Maggie asked “Are those blueberry pancakes?!” James picked up the plate and handed it to Connor, then her passed him the syrup. James looked at the Klu, “Cluck , would you like something? ” Cluck did the pink routine and the voice said 'No thank you". Nodding at Cluck, James handed Maggie a bowl of oatmeal and plate of fruit. Taking the same for himself, they all started eating. That’s when Connor was finally able to look away from Cluck and the table and noticed the rest of the room. All the KluUggö were silent and starting. Most were shades of purple and blue, Connor realised blue must be curious, pink has to be happy, and purple must be regular. “What color do you turn when you are mad?” He asked Cluck. Cluck made some noises and the translator responded “mad? I do not have a context for that.” “Ummmmm like if your sister won’t be quite” Connor nodded thinking the Klu must have a sister. Cluck made some noises and turned a deep purple “I apologise human child Connor, I do not have a sister.” “Do you have a brother?” Kate asked around a mouth full of cereal and milk. “Don’t talk with your mouth full” Maggie said automatically. The Klu looked at the small girl in horror. She was covered in milk. Her mouth, hands, and on the front of her shirt. The KluUggö could smell it spoiling at a microbial level, they did have the best sense of smell in the whole 998.76 quadrant. The KluUggö started to turn an increasingly darker shade of purple, with a slight green tinge, in his distress. Maggie saw this and immediately tried too out him at ease. Next part coming soon.
