Remember when Ursula K. Le Guin called JK Rowling a nasty basic bitch back in like, 2004? We should have listened
“This last is the situation, as I see it, between my A Wizard of Earthsea and J.K.Rowling’s Harry Potter. I didn’t originate the idea of a school for wizards — if anybody did it was T.H.White, though he did it in single throwaway line and didn’t develop it. I was the first to do that. Years later, Rowling took the idea and developed it along other lines. She didn’t plagiarize. She didn’t copy anything. Her book, in fact, could hardly be more different from mine, in style, spirit, everything. The only thing that rankles me is her apparent reluctance to admit that she ever learned anything from other writers. When ignorant critics praised her wonderful originality in inventing the idea of a wizards’ school, and some of them even seemed to believe that she had invented fantasy, she let them do so. This, I think, was ungenerous, and in the long run unwise.“

Q: Nicholas Lezard has written ‘Rowling can type, but Le Guin can write.’ What do you make of this comment in the light of the phenomenal success of the Potter books? I’d like to hear your opinion of JK Rowling’s writing style
UKL: I have no great opinion of it. When so many adult critics were carrying on about the “incredible originality” of the first Harry Potter book, I read it to find out what the fuss was about, and remained somewhat puzzled; it seemed a lively kid’s fantasy crossed with a “school novel”, good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited.

Finland & Sweden joining NATO now sadly seems inevitable. One of many ways that Putin’s invasion will backfire against Russian security priorities in the long-run

@simic-simp
one of my favourite things about autism is that we have such high rates of transness and especially nonbinarity not because of some genetic whatever but simply because we look at society’s gender rules and go “that’s stupid”
from @deerfishing in the notes:
saw this clip from the good doctor and it pissed me off cos this autistic dude just doesn’t comprehend why this other characters trans an im just like man,,, thats such an allistic way of seeing it, they think gender is so solid and natural that the autistic person wouldn’t be able to understand otherwise. when its literally the opposite.
Yeah. My sister and I are on the spectrum and one thing I've noticed is that the way we approach the world is very "why?". It's not like we're like REJECT ALL AUTHORITY AND SOCIAL RULES, but we want to know WHY and if that explanation doesn't make sense, we do not accept the validity of this rule or authority (until it can be explained, if it even can).
Like, my sister liked to go outside in the winter. My mom would go "hey, put on your coat!" and my sis would be like "no. I don't want to". I suggest telling her instead that she should check the temperature and if it's under X degrees, she need to wear a coat because it's too cold. Guess what? This explanation works! My mom doesn't need to remind her, she just knows that you check the thermometer before going outside. It makes sense to her, as a rule, rather than just an edict from an authority figure.
And then we come to gender: even if you turn out to be cis and conform to your assigned gender, you have to admit that a lot if not all of the rules society makes up about gender and gender roles are complete nonsense. Why do men wear pants and women wear dresses? Why is it a manly job to fix a car and a feminine job to sew a blanket? It's just weird traditions and coincidence and bigotry getting codified into "how things are".
So it doesn't surprise me that a ton of people on the autism spectrum take a look at gender and just go "yeah, no. if I'm gonna do any of that stuff it's gonna be on my own terms, these rules make no sense".
And frankly everyone should be that way. Pick and choose! Ignore the rules, make your own guidelines, then violate them if they no longer serve your needs. Your gender is yours and no one should have any authority over it but you.
