Asperitas Clouds Over New Zealands

These clouds were only formally recognized as a distinct cloud type last year. So far, not a lot of studies on asperitas clouds have been conducted.

Most low cloud decks are flat-bottomed, but aperitas have a vertical structure beneath. People believe that they might be related to lenticular clouds (form near mountains, parallel to the direction of the wind) or mammatus clouds (pouch-like shapes that form beneath clouds, associated with thunderstorms).
