Leonardo has this slogan in the Rise of the TMNT movie: “Hope is the greatest ninja weapon.” And honestly, it never felt like just a line for the film, it felt like it was meant for us, the fans. That’s why I’m convinced the creators were explicitly telling us to hold on to hope for season 3.

Can we also talk about "across the universe"??? Like? WHERE DID YOU GO, LEO? What kinds of things have you seen?
And what caused his powers to go "screwy"? That sounds like a form of portal-jacking, not just him miscalculating his portals. The way he phrases this makes it sound like he had no control over his own powers. And the fact that he wasn't able to portal directly home right away: Either the portals were constantly opening up and throwing him around the universe (literally "bouncing"), or, every time Leo tried to portal back, it would redirect him somewhere else completely.
But, yes, that's an EXTREMELY long time to be missing. His family must have been so worried, assuming there was no way to contact Leo during that time. And think about how terrified Leo must have been!:
His powers weren't working right and were sending him wherever, which could have been some pretty dangerous places; he had no way home; he didn't know the status of his family (he almost definitely knew that Splinter was on his way out, considering Splinter passes away RIGHT after future!Leo warns past!Leo in the comic, so past-future!Leo is probably already freaking out about not being there when Splinter DOES die); he's alone, or at least doesn't have his family, and he's lost and has virtually no supplies.
Yeah, and then add him coming back to find his dad gone; that's got to be the worst feeling ever.
In my head, this is a human au, but if you don't really care for genetics (or just like turtles like Nedra), feel free to go crazy. This is a rottmnt au, but some elements (like the Shredder) are inspired by the 2012 series.

The setting is a vague ''wild west'' because I don't know enough about that era to make it even slightly historically accurate.
April (25yo):
April is an upper-class girl with a lot of expectations placed upon her, and 0 want for fulfilling any of them. She doesn't want to take over her family's boring old business in her boring town, she doesn't want to "settle down", and she DEFINITELY doesn't want a husband.
Until she sees an interesting ad in a newspaper
WIFE NEEDED. My age is young enough, and I am 12 feet tall when I’m on a horse. I am looking for a woman who won’t force me to get out of the house too much, or ask too many questions, but will be willing to take care of the farm while we're away on 'business'. Looks are unimportant. The house has many bedrooms for you to choose. I have a LOT of MALE friends. You NEED to be okay with this. No children, but I do have brothers.
It looks slightly fishy, and the guy posting it is certainly a criminal, or gay, or most likely both. She reckons that's her best chance.
Her first meeting with Donnie isn't the most pleasant one, but him and his family are definitely criminals, and that's the kind of wild freedom she has always dreamed of. At least Raph, Mikey and Leo seem mostly friendly.
Hopefully her glorified idea of a life above the law doesn't get shattered too soon.
Donnie (27):
Donnie grew up in a house, with presumably other people inside of it, and that's about all you're getting out of him regarding his past.
He met Raph and Splinter as a teenager, but he was never quite able to shake off some of his posh habits. He's very well educated.
An accident left him with a messed up knee, and he needs a cane to move around most days.
Starts of pretty distant towards April (he doesn't need the company, he honestly mostly wanted unpaid labor), but eventually grows very fond of her as a friend. And he takes a lot of joy in using 'WHAT DID YOU SAY ABOUT MY WIFE?' to start bar fights.
Has sworn off dating, but has a few weird exes running around.
Raph (32):
Raph was adopted by Splinter as a kid, and grew up seeing him as his only father figure. When they met Donnie and Leo, Raph wanted to be the same sort of leader/guardian to them, as Splinter was to him.
He was mostly unsuccessful, but it's really not his fault.
Splinter had a lot of secrets he kept even from him, and after his death, Raph tries his best to be okay with that.
Leo (25):
Leo met Raph, Splinter and Donnie shortly after running away from home. He was going by 'Blue' back then, and even now he never told them his real name. There are many things he never told them.
Like how grew up with his biological father, who was DEFINITELY a very sane man, and it's NOT like the only reason he finally gathered the courage to leave was because his father thought he accidentally killed him.
Shredder is a complicated man, but Leo takes up a little too much after him to really say anything about that.
Leo always knew he had some half-siblings, but never really cared besides seeing them once or twice, and knowing their names.
The only person who ever really knew Leo's past is Splinter. Mostly because he immediately recognized his brother's face on Leo, but only mostly.
After he died, Leo decided to fully put his past behind him. Until Mikey showed up.
Mikey (15):
His mom found out she was pregnant in her late 30's. She always wanted to have kids but there was never the right time, so she figured this might be her final shot.
All Mikey ever really knew about his father was that he was a 'scoundrel', and it was probably true. Arachne (aka 'Big Mama') is a business woman, with a successful legally owned casino, and some less legal side ventures, they don't need this kind of energy in their lives.
Growing up, Mikey had both too much independence and too little freedom (he was allowed to basically wonder around town alone since he was 6, but wasn't allowed to cut his hair how he wanted because his mom loved his curls). She tended to treat Mikey a bit like an extension of herself. Mikey didn't want to be JUST LIKE HER, and she took that more as an insult than just the process of kids growing up.
Mikey started leaving house for longer and longer, until he met some new friends and just... Never came back.
He loves his new family a lot, even if he often gets mistaken for their son (him and Leo do look alike, he will give them that). He never met Splinter, but the stories they tell about him make him want to be just like that when he gets older. But first, he needs to convince them to let him carry a proper gun, even if Leo always gives him a weird look when he asks.
