No Labels Series

Clothing in its meaning has become more about labels and status than its cultural representation of a generation. Material wealth has overcome cultural importance because it is more vital to have a pretty face or well known advocates representing the brand. In my opinion we should make fashion less of a spectacle and more about the content again. Clothing should be universal for anyone who wants to wear it. Within our structure no matter how different, we are all human. I deconstructed the physical body of the Mannequin and modeled each one after a Modern architecture site in Europe. Each one is titled and heavily influenced by the city each building was in. I wanted to express the strong correlation of Art and Architecture with Fashion. Modernism fully embodies the aesthetic I’m pushing by having an aim to break free from the classical and tradition seen in fashion today and push it further by using the fine art of Textiles and Sculpture. Taking the color scheme from the exterior of each building, I hand-dyed and pieced together fabric to construct a Textile painting with an urban twist. Each painting piece was heavy influenced from Suprematist and De Stijl movements. With the use of lights I expose the structure underneath so the form is never lost. Each form was intended to be completely reminiscent of the building versus the human form of a mannequin. I want to break away from conventional in fashion not just on the surface but all the way down to the identity.

Methods used: Color Transfer, Stencil Embossing, Feather Roll, and Hand Altering

Artist Statement: When I lived on Auburn Avenue I took photos from my Balcony for a photography Project I did last year. I stylized the pictures to be reminiscent of the chapter Something and Nothing out of Charlotte Cottons: The Photograph as Contemporary Art. I combined photos that I took with photos of Auburn Avenue from back in roughly the 1920′s when the Royal Peacock was first introduced. I did this to represent the condition it's in now and how we let such a historical Avenue apart of Atlanta's history deteriorate in such a way. The crime and deterioration rate is at an all time high still on this street and its a shame we have tainted its history instead of maintain its prominence. This is a triptych mono-print on three 11x14 wood panels using Color Transfer and embossing Methods with stencil and hand-altered with Gel Pens and .005 Micron.

Artist Statement: My uncles painting featured left was my inspiration to create this hand-dyed textile piece. I wanted to pay homage to his original painting so I kept the dying methods and coloring very similar. My uncle passed when I was little and was extremely influenced by Modern art and has really pushed me in the same direction. He has always been a big inspiration to me within the art I produce so Im very reminiscent in all the styles he used.

Artist Statement: I made this piece to express my ideas on Media Manipulation in our society and how prevalent it is in social media. Labels and ideas get so misconstrued by the media giving people skewed notions that they actually have an idea of whats going without doing any research on their own. This isn't good because majority of Media is biased not factually based. I believe the media was introduced to gain a specific following catered to a certain spectrum versus giving people the facts so we can make our own educated opinion. Our youth doesn't have a good representation of reality anymore because the majority of them are only are listening to what is presented through social media.
