Today, the UK government accepted guidance which excludes trans people from single sex spaces.
This is a change to the interpretation and implementation of the equalities act which legally prevents any trans person from using the correct changing rooms, toilets, or even attending gym classes.
It’s more than a bathroom ban. It’s something that will prevent us living our lives.
And, as it stands, the guidance is markedly worse for trans men than it is for trans women.
Taken from page 268 of the pdf linked above:
This guidance sets out, in a legally binding code, that trans men can be barred from both men’s and women’s facilities.
While it does go on to say that preventing us from accessing any services might be grounds for a discrimination claim, that’s in direct contradiction to the paragraphs shown above, and right now is purely hypothetical until tested in a court of law.
As the news of the government’s decision to enforce this guidance spreads, a lot is going to be said about the impact on trans women. That’s good, a lot needs to be said.
I doubt, though, that as much will be said about the impact on trans men. I doubt it because when this guidance was first released as a draft I saw dozens of not hundreds of comments talking about how the only impact was to trans women, joking that trans men should use the women’s toilets to make transphobes uncomfortable.
Please don’t fall into that pattern this time, not now this is really happening.
Protect trans women, please, but I am begging you, protect trans men, too.
This guidance systematically erases us from public life. It is deliberate. We are not collateral damage, we are the target.
Think of us in your anger.
This is how transphobes respond to “Oh so you want this (very masculine) trans man in these spaces then?” They hear the question and ensure that their ability to say “get lost freak” gets built into the rules
The only person I've already seen talk about this was a trans man who apologized for being a trans man speaking on it and opened with an acknowledgement that this will of course be much worse for trans women than it will be for him. We cannot keep doing this to ourselves.
I honestly think that nonbinary people should be allowed to be mean* about our genders without getting shit for it more often.
*(Read: Assertive of our boundaries and stood firm on the fact that our identities are deserving of respect)
We should be allowed to make a sour face or take a cold tone with someone when they carelessly misgender us for the fifth time in a row despite multiple corrections. We should be allowed to complain about erasure and ask where our needs and experiences come into play when we hear people reinforcing binary normativity in their discussions of gender related issues. We should be allowed to be visibly/audibly angry with other trans people when they try to forcibly categorize us as fem or masc, or imply that our enbyness is a mere phase that will eventually lead to "real/full" (binary to binary) transition.
Nonbinary people should be allowed to take our identities seriously and expect others to do the same for us, regardless of whether or not we will come off as mean for doing so. Because quite frankly, upon seeing how exorsexist the world has become recently, I think we haven't been mean enough.
Do a little dance. Make a little love. Get the FUCK down tonight.
people werent ready for this post in 2011. what about now
your name is Lurien the Watcher | Monomon the Teacher | Herrah the Beast, and you'd rather be anywhere else than still in this meeting with these two weirdos.
I think it would be fun if the three Dreamers were strangers before the Pale King put them together for the world's most high-stakes group project, and it took some time for them to warm up to each other...
the paris catacombs are 1000x more fucked up than i imagined
did you know the cops once found a fully functioning movie theater with a well-stocked bar inside the catacombs and they when they tried to go back later to formally investigate it was completely emptied out save for a note that read "don't search for us"
Underground french cinema
my little bro is part of the catacombs community and yeah, it's basically a fully autonomous society! enough that when my bro goes in on a friday night, they don't come out until monday for work- sometimes longer if they took days off.
some of the rooms have fully stocked pantries with cooking equipment, some have movies like the one described above, some have books you're allowed to just take but people always put back- every day people bring things from the outside. artists often set up galleries there. there are rooms with mattresses and hammocks set up for people to sleep. one of the room is just a place where people leave shoes for the fun of it.
this is Known, it's not a secret by any means. the catacombs are as big as paris itself, and people live there just as people live above. it's wonderful when you think about it.
A little update! My little bro is now my little sister. Please don't misgender her :)
I’ve been trying to share this since I found out. They are moving onto harassing people in Memphis.
Community members face retaliation for trying to spread the word out, a lawsuit alleges.
Everyone was lovely in getting the word out about Chicago and Minnesota. I want to spread that awareness for folk in tennessee.
Lmao we have to fucking destroy this company are you fucking kidding me with this shit
Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and
Remember that xkcd about how Google searches are shit now? What if we made them even worse for no reason?
I will vote for any candidate who promises to go scorched fucking earth on every tech company. Break every single one of them up into companies based around a single product and then split those in thirds. Weaponize existing antitrust laws to the hilt and pass the most draconian versions of them ever seen on this planet. Nationalize google search specifically. Pass consumer privacy protections strict enough to kill the data harvesting industry for good. Make all of these fuckers go bankrupt for this rent-seeking shit

important pull quote:
the issue in all these cases is payment processors getting squeamish about anything "adult" because they're being constantly lobbied and harassed by right wing nuts who don't think anyone else has the right to make their own decisions

I really recommend the Táin Bó Cúailnge to anyone looking to get into medieval literature because it's a great story, brilliant poetry (I read the Carson translation, and the way he translates the roscada sections are beautiful) and the backbone of the Ulster Cycle, but it's also just really fucking funny. It has a very slapstick yet dry sense of humor that provides just enough comic relief to make the dramatic moments of the story even more impactful. Genuinely I laugh out loud every few pages. Go read it.
You can't make this shit up
