Oh, and I actually do write the same way I do an essay or something else just as important or professional. :) I mean, I don't write lengthy emails or texts. If something gets to lengthy, I just ask the person to meet up with me or give me a call so we can better discuss the situation. :) I do it, because I want to make sure I keep my writing skills. I mean, I'm not a brilliant writer or anything like that, but I like to practice good writing all the time.

Sounds like your preference. Most people change even how they speak to suit the kind of person they are speaking to. If you want to keep your writing pristine that's your prerogative. Its restrictive to needlessly follow grammar rules regardless of context from my perspective. Context is important. In this case the context is tumblr.

My advice to you would be to practice as much as you want but to worry less. I don't value grammar as anything other than a tool and im not much of a rule follower. Grammar is boring most of the time. Im not going to turn my hobby into slavish rule following. Nothing could be more excruciating and boring. Its fair if you were reading essays of mine but clearly that isnt the context here.

I just wouldn't want the problems I see on here to sneak their way into more important stuff. :) If you say you're writing is fine outside of tumblr, I won't argue with you. I don't know you, and I can't assume you're on the same level as the adults I work with. I guess I'll just advise you to be careful not to let your writing problems here sneak into more important stuff. :)

Saying “You’re ugly and gross. Lose some weight.” is not the only way to promote body shaming. Saying “You’re not fat, you’re beautiful.” is not the solution. You’re still implying that fat is bad. You’re basically saying “Some people should hate themselves, but not you.” And how do you expect a dangerously thin person to believe that they’re not fat if you say the exact same thing to someone who is fat?

If someone says “I’m fat.”, they’re most likely not putting themselves down. They’re most likely not asking for you to convince them otherwise.

Different things work for different people. I wouldn't recommend out and out shaming for women but actually for men it can work. A good teasing from their friends is just what some people need. Most people who wont do anything about their weight are looking for reasons why its ok that they have eaten themselves into obesity.

Being fat is bad. There’s no way around it. I dont think an approach that hides that fact is really kind or helpful most of the time.

Well, it's high on mind, because I'm passionate about success and education. :) I've worked with individuals who've struggled with this type of thing, and they've noticed when they used every opportunity to practice good writing, their writing improved in more important areas too. I don't like to see people struggle to be taken seriously due to poor writing skills, and unfortunately, it's happened to a lot of people I've worked with despite being highly intelligent.

I dont struggle with grammar in academic writing. This being my hobby I dont really care so much about things I dont find interesting or fun. Grammar is fun to break and use in new ways but other than that its absolutely uninteresting to me.

I've noticed that even though you seem to be upset with me, you're writing with better punctuation and apostrophe placement, so there's that. :) I didn't mean to make you upset, though, and I have no hard feelings over your insult towards my intelligence. I wasn't the first anon that seemed a little more insulting, I was just adding to what they said. I have already, however, addressed what you said about it being a "casual" platform. Maybe you were just too mad to understand.

Im not upset. I just didnt think you were getting it. Ive done this before when people refuse to look at the actual arguments ive made and just repeat the same point. I break it down completely and show them the argument they should be making if they want to refute what ive said. This spoon feeding tactic is pretty normal for me, I just used more snarky language today. Came off a bit strong I guess. Whoops.

Was your argument that it could leak into other areas of writing if I were to make mistakes here? I thought that the first part of my reply already addressed that. That I modify the importance I place on grammar according to the importance of the platform. I mean you probably do it too. Most people dont text the same way they write essays. Even my word choice is much different from what I would choose on a different platform. I guess I could practice my grammar on here but its absolutely not my priority.

There's no need to get upset with me or insult my intelligence as a way to try to get under my skin (and it doesn't. I'm very aware that I'm a good and smart person). I don't have any beef with you or even dislike you. I just believe that despite tumblr being used for "fun," a lot of the debates you participate in are not on fun topics. Im sorry dude. I did mean to insult your intelligence but I take it back. I just dont see grammar is anywhere near as important as you personally do on this casual a platform. I make many mistakes in my writing, and im not worried about it. Ill check it but its just not something I place in high priority on such a casual platform. I value mostly the content of the argument being made whether its coming from others or from myself.

The only time that ive ever seen grammar corrections used in argument has been in a way to purposefully distract from the point. If the point or meaning isnt obscured by poor grammar its not relevant in my opinion. I avoid completely using this argument myself. I do talk about serious issues, but I think when you place this kind of importance on grammar you are ignoring that the venue for the arguments is non serious in nature. If you come across an argument of mine in which grammar obscures the meaning then I will gladly change it but it is very low on my priority list and I dont really understand why its high on yours. I value grammar only as a tool for communication, not a rigid set of rules never to break.

..if you wrote properly. One of the main goals of many people who debate with others is to try to sway those they are debating with as well as the spectators. You'd get a lot more people to consider your views if you wrote like someone who at least got a basic education, and as I've said before, those who don't practice good writing on a regular basis will usually find their errors sneaking into other writing outside of the "fun" stuff. I wouldn't want that to happen to you if it didn't need to.

Ill be serious on the serious platforms like academic writing. As I said:

Feminism eats itself. Every feminist “hero” goes down eventually. The best thing you can do is not try to please internet feminists in the first place.

Of course I worry, because I care about people and their ability to succeed. Promoting the idea that grammar isn't something to worry about is not okay, especially when debating serious issues. I don't mind if you repeat yourself again, because it doesn't make my point any less right.

Do you want me to spoon feed you? You aren't adding any new arguments or information. Perhaps your emphasis on grammar alone has left your argumentative skills lacking?

So far in our conversation you have said that grammar is important and I shouldn't neglect it and I have told you that I think my approach is proportional to the lack of seriousness of the platform that tumblr is. One of the things im actually accused of on here is taking my arguments too seriously because its only tumblr. I partially agree but im just having fun here.

So if you want to take the argument further you have to show why my approach isn't appropriate for the platform (tumblr).

If it makes you feel better to repeat yourself, that's cool, but repeating yourself doesn't make writing bad when you can write better any less irresponsible.

There's never any reason to slack on grammar especially if you are able to write well. Again, errors are usually consistent.

Grammar shouldn't be low on anyone's scale of importance. You can be good at math, science, etc., but if you cannot properly construct a decent sentence, you'll find their are few teachers or possible employers that take you seriously. Neither you nor anyone else should put it low on the scale of importance.

I put grammar low on my scale of importance on tumblr. I already addressed this.

Nothing is under my skin. I just think it's responsible to point out to an adult that they should be setting a better example by writing correctly instead of being lazy. Too many people don't take the importance of writing seriously and end up struggling. I don't think it's responsible of you to take it lightly.

Grammar really is something low on the scale of important things for me. Clearly its high on your list but im not going to adopt that kind of attitude to little things because of your personal preference. Thanks for your concern though.

Grammar and punctuation problems usually stay consistent with different types of writing, which means you're likely to make the same mistakes for more important things such as academic assignments, job applications, and resumes. Also, lazy writing sets a bad example for other people, especially if you are an adult. There's no reason to slack off. There's no reason to avoid basic writing rules (unless there are other factors making it difficult for you to do so, and those don't apply to you).

I just dont really care about grammar and punctuation on tumblr. Its not a formal space. I edit more heavily sometimes. It really depends on how I feel.

So whats the real issue under your skin?

Why don't you want to discuss your problems with basic grammar and punctuation? I mean, I'm just pointing out that more people will take you seriously if you know how to write properly. If someone is lacking a good hold on these things, it's only fair for someone to point them out so they know. Lazy writing is lazy and not okay.

I just dont really care about grammar and punctuation. Sometimes I write lazily. I have no problem with that. Maybe you are elevating tumblr above what it actually is.
