Opening night of Once Upon A Mattress at the Telfair Peet Theatre at Auburn University! My view + the sound booth from above.
The Waveform Of The Music
this is so cool
So apparently there’s a sound that is 36 or so octaves below middle c that is so low that it kills you. The sound waves literally kill you. And this sound is only found in dark matter (for what we know). This is so cool
I love science
#the DEATH NOTE (via djinnandddragons)
interesting....
We have to be honest, we never would have thought of those sounds being the basis for the Walkers. Ben Burtt is a mad genius.
No More Floyd Collins. I switched into The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. One of the only clear sound cues calls for "pretentious, heavy metal version of Greensleeves". Enjoy :)
Design
Hey so I've moved into USC and met the other 3 sound designers here (yes in a theatre school of maybe 500 people there are only 4 sound designers). This semester I'm going to be helping on To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday and Floyd Collins. More news and other side projects to come
I like it when it rains hard. It sounds like white noise everywhere, which is like silence but not empty.

Update
Hello all!
God this blog has been extremely quiet. Someone must have turned the gain down...
Well it's time for all that to change. I'm going to get back into my routine of regular posting. However instead of forcing myself to do so everyday, I shall strive to post at least 3 time a week (baby steps).
Expect more new sounds, cool moments and awesome experiences. I'll be starting school at USC on Wednesday for sound design so stay tuned for all those wacky adventures as well
As previously reported, the Tony Awards Administration Committee determined that Best Sound Design of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Musical Categories would be eliminated from the established list of competitive categories, beginning with the 2014-2015 season. The Tony Administration Committee may bestow a Special Tony Award to a production when it determines that extraordinary sound design has been achieved.
In response to the decision, and as previously reported, sound designer John Gromada, who was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Sound Design of a Play for 2013’s revival of The Trip to Bountiful, has started an online petition to reverse the Committee’s ruling.
Gromada’s petition, posted on thepetitionsite.com, reads as follows:
Sound Design is a theatrical design art that is a critical part of the collaborative art of theatre. The American Theatre Wing should continue to honor excellence in sound design as it does for scenery, costume and lighting design, and as it has done since 2008. Sound designers are an important part of the theatrical community whose vital contributions cannot be ignored or dismissed. Reverse this decision now!
The petition, which has currently garnered over 26,913 signatures, can be viewed here. The number is quickly growing- especially with the help of Broadway stars who have taken to twitter in support of sound designers
This is absolutely wonderful
Because way too many people were asking for one…

This was actually really good. Oh and a nice sound design as well :)
Studio Visit
I don't know if this posted already but I don't see it on my dash so I'll post it again:
Last Friday cynicalinstrumentalist and I visited Polarity in San Francisco. Polarity is a post production house and has worked on such movies like Arbitrage, Mrs. Doubtfire and Toy Story. Here's their site: http://www.polaritypost.com/
We had a great time and learned a lot about the post production process. I shall be writing a longer post about our experience soon :)

Ben Burtt Interview about the Imperial Walkers
Bertrand’s work will give sound to everything we see in the film: the steps, the sound of the clothes, the objects moving… In order to do so, he uses a bunch of objects that will create the appropriate sounds.
To record the sounds, Bertrand stands in front of a screen with the film on it...
