◖◖ DIGGING A LITTLE DEEPER ◗◗
Maybe it seems immoral to separate twins, but when Hiram and Leroy Berry received news that they’d been selected by an expectant mother to adopt one of her soon-to-be twins, and that the other was being adopted by somebody else, they chose not to argue. Not many people were looking to allow two men to adopt twenty-one years ago, after all; they’d take what they could get. The decision was made to keep their baby sheltered from the knowledge that she was born one of two - they weren’t pleased that they couldn’t take the other baby along with her, and they didn’t want her to feel that they hadn’t cared to try. Keeping the fact from her seemed the better option all around.
The first born of the twins, Molly was adopted into the Berry family as a newborn; her birth mother, Annie, was nowhere near ready to raise one child, let alone two, and had liked the sound of the Berry’s profile. The three settled on a closed adoption, with Hiram and Leroy practically dancing around the hospital’s waiting room as their daughter was being welcomed into the world. It was a no-brainer for them to choose the name Molly after the little girl from the Broadway classic with which her birth mother shared a name. Annie liked the name too, which didn’t necessarily matter, but they liked the idea of her approval. She was literally giving them one of her children, after all.
Due to the closed adoption, Molly has never met her mother. Of course, she has always had her own questions, and has wondered about the person who brought her into the world, but her fathers have always made sure she never missed having a mother around. They provided Molly with anything she could ever want - materially, emotionally, etc. In an effort to make sure she had access to every opportunity, they enrolled her in dance classes, voice classes, acting classes and other things of the like. Unfortunately, Molly was never very good at any of them.
Described very well as awkward and quiet, the spotlight was never for Molly. She’d freeze up on stage, and rather than singing at the top of her lungs like the other kids in her classes, she would much prefer to be in her own company, where she’d read books and generally fill all of the criteria for the title of “loner.” For a while, she didn’t really care, but as she grew older, reaching high school especially, the fact that she only had one or two friends had become something of an upset for Molly. She’d become interested in friendships and relationships, but she’d made a name for herself as the quiet girl who always hung out alone.
Desperately, Molly tried to get herself noticed. She started talking back to her teachers, just so other kids would have to acknowledge her. She began attending parties, and would flirt with anyone that gave her attention. Despite the fact that she was (and still remains) a virgin, she definitely made a name for herself by throwing herself at guys. Unfortunately, it obviously did more harm than good, and Molly now found herself friendless for other reasons.
When college time came around, Molly knew she needed to get away from her hometown. She’d gone from being invisible to being recognized for all of the wrong reasons, and she needed a new place to reinvent herself while also not losing herself again along the way. Molly picked Nashville - Belmont University, to be exact - where she applied as a Pre-Vet Med student, and found herself a job as a receptionist at a local animal hospital part-time. From a well to do family, she didn’t necessarily need the money, but Molly wanted a taste of working life, especially one that put her in contact with animals, an interest she has never lost.
