How to turn off AI-scraping from your Word documents
Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out.
If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately. How to Turn off Word’s AI Access To Your Content
I won’t beat around the bush. Microsoft Office doesn’t make it easy to opt out of this new AI privacy agreement, as the feature is hidden through a series of popup menus in your settings:On a Windows computer, follow these steps to turn off “Connected Experiences”:
File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences > Uncheck box: “Turn on optional connected experiences”
This applies to older versions of Word as well, though I don't know how old. I have Office Professional Plus 2021 and I still had to turn this off. I thought they only rolled out feature updates in newer versions or for 365 subscribers, but apparently they can make an exception for AI so they can scrape as much content as possible.
Hatred. Malice, even.
I really need to point out something that might get lost in the general anti-AI sentiment: the AI training is the less important thing here.
The fact that Microsoft has tools that can scrape data from your personal documents is a level of privacy violation so amazingly grave that I have no words for it. There is no amount of assurances or privacy policies that can fix this. This is a line that's beyond the pale.
Millions of people use Microsoft Office to write sensitive documents, from government documents, documents involving confidential information, or just personal information. The fact that a private company has any access to this at all is something that we shouldn't take for granted. I do not wish any of my documents to be read by anyone but me, whatever it is my resume with all my private information or just a fanfic drabble I wrote the other day.
This should be an outrage, but our privacy has been steadily been eroded to "opt-outs" and "remind me later".
At least in this case, you can take practical measures. Uninstall Microsoft Office right now. Install Libreoffice, it has all the same functionalities and full compatibility without any of this bullshit.
(for that matter, don't trust Google Drive or Documents either)
The Himalayas, with Mount Everest at top center, captured by satellite at a low angle. The range contains some of Earth’s highest peaks, including over 100 that exceed 23,600 feet (7,200 meters) in elevation. The Himalayas abut or cross five countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, China, and Pakistan.

Ultimately, it makes no difference in outcome, though. I do recognize the difference between trans women and pervs, but if letting the former in, let's the latter join, biological women will be in danger. I feel like trans women should fight to gain their own spaces, safe for them without endangering cis women in the process.
